UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
MICHAEL WAGNER, OF OINOINNATI, 01110.
IMPROVEMENT IN PENS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,242, dated J nne 20,1871.
N atnre and Objects of the Invention.
Description of the Accompanying Drawing.
Figure 1 is a perspective drawing of afountain-pen embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the pen with the handle and exterior adjusting-band removed. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the exterior adjusting-band. Fig. 5 is a section from point to rear of the adjusting-band. 7
General Description.
A is the handle of the pen, and B the pen. The latter is composed of three jaws or nibs, b, and a socket, I), for the reception of the handle A. Below the socket the jaws 1) form, to-
gether, a triangle in cross-section, and each jaw is tapering in form, as shown, so as to admit of their uniting in a common point, X. The ink is contained between the jaws b, the sides of the jaws being sufficiently close together to prevent the escape of ink.
For the purpose of cleaning, these jaws may be bent back or sprung to admit of the introduction inside the jaws of a brush or cloth.
a In order to keep the jaws together while in use, and furnish a means for the adjustment of the pen to write different thicknesses of strokes or lines, I provide the exterior band 0, which isso shaped as to fit the exterior of the jaws, and adapted to slide up and down the jaws to temper or adjust the flexibility of the nibs or points of the pen. A tapering cup, 0, is attached to the band 0, the sides of which serve to hug the jaws of the pen to prevent spreading, and the concavity of which forms a chamber for the occupancy of ink, to increase the capacity of the pen for ink, and thus enable it to write a Very long time without refilling.
This pen is peculiarly adapted, in addition to its use with writing-fluids, to receive for use Writing-paste, which, when wet by dipping in water, will feed acolored fluid to the pen-points for writing.
Owing to the peculiar construction of this pen it is calculated to write pencil-like, with anequal thickness of line for the up-and-down strokes, and perform its work with less fatigue to the penman than the ordinary writing-pen.
It can, however, be adjusted to write with heavy and light strokes, to adapt it for bold penmanship.
Claim.
A fountain-pen, constructed with taper elastic jaws or nibs, b b b, and exterior sliding ring or band C, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
