Reference mayrbehad to the accompanying drawings, and the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. Similar characters refer to similar parts in the several figures therein.
rIhis invention relates to ovens for baking or drying various articles.
Certain objects of the invention are to facilitate the loading of the articles into the oven and their removal therefrom; and to permit practically continuous operation of the oven.
Other objects will appear in connection with the following description.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a horizontal cross-section of an oven embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same taken on the-broken line 2-2 in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings wherein the invention is shown in preferred form, 1 is a heated inclosure which may be of any desired shape provided with a side-opening, 2, in one of its vertical walls. A hollow upright cylinder or drum, 3, is rotatively mounted within the inclosure in position to occupy said side-opening, 2. The cylinder may be so rotatively mounted in any known manner. I have shown the cylinder, 3, mounted upon a turn-table, 4L, supported upon ball-bearings, 5.
The cylinder, 3, has a central, vertical partition, 6, dividing its interior into two compartments, 7 and 8, and the cylinder is provided with side-openings, 9, communieating with said respective compartments.
Each of the side-openings, 9, in the cylinder is adapted to register with the sideopening, 2, in the inclosure, and the portions of the cylinder-walls between said opening, 1, in the inclosure, and the porthe side-opening, 2, in the inclosure at certain times. n
Brackets, 10, extend across the respective compartments, 7 and 8, at right angles to the central partition, G, and serve to removably support shelves, 11, upon which the articles to be treated are placed.
f The spaces between the side-edges of the shelves and the closed portions of the cylinder-wall' between lthe side-openings, 9are provided with horizontal open-work partitions, 12, 'preferably formed by wire-screens, which 'partitions are substantially in the plane of the shelves, 11, and serve as supports for articles to be treated, while permitting circulation of the heated air around and ybetween rthe shelves.
The cylinder, 3, may be rotated by hand, or in'any known manner, as by a cable, 13, passing around the cylinder and connected with suitable operating-mechanism, not shown.
rIhe interior of the inclosure, 1, may be heated in any known manner to such temperature as is desired for Athe treatment of the particular articles.
I have shown a series of steam-pipes, 14, along the side-walls of the inclosure, 1, which-provide a sufficient degree of heat for many purposes.
The operation of the oven is as follows: The cylinder, 3, is rotated to cause one of its side-openings, 9, to register with the sideopening, 2, in the inclosure, thus aifording ready access from outside the inclosure, 1, for loading and unloading the articles upon the shelves, 11, and screens, 12. A load having been placed in one of the compartments, the cylinder is rotated 180 degrees causing the other side-opening, 9, to register with the side-opening, 2, in thek inclosure, and bringing the lirst-heated compartment into communication with the heated interior of the inclosure. rIhe drying of the articles in the iirst-loaded compartment thus proceeds while the other compartment is being loaded. When both compartments are loaded, the rcylinder is rotated to bring one of its closed side-portions across the sideopening, 2, of the inclosure, thus closing said opening, while leaving both compartments, 7 and 8, open to the interior of the inclosure.
l/Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In an oven, and in combination, a heated inclosure provided with a side-opening; and an upright hollow cylinder rotatively mounted within the inclosure in position to occupy said side-opening, and provided with a side-opening adapted to communicate with the interior of the inclosure in one rotative position of the cylinder, and to register with the side-opening in the inclosure in another rotative position of the cylinder.
2. In an oven, and in combination, a heated inclosure provided with aside-opening; an upright hollow cylinder rotatively mounted within said inclosure in position to occupy said side-opening, and having av portion of its body adapted to close said side-opening in one rotative position of the cylinder and being provided with a sideopening adapted to register with the sideopening in the inclosure in another rotative position of the cylinder.
8. In an oven, and in combination, a heated inclosure provided with a side-opening; and an upright hollow cylinder rotatively mounted within the inclosure in position to occupy said side-opening, and having a vertical partition whereby it is divided into compartments, said cylinder being provided with side-openings into the respective compartments adapted to severally register with the side-opening in the inolosure and having intermediately of its said sideopenings closed portions adapted to severally close said side-opening in the inclosure.
