citizen of the United States, residing at Dover, county of Strafi'ord, and State of New l-Iampsh-n'e, have invented an Improveand more particularly to the drawing mechanism whereby the fibers to be twisted together are drawn out 'an-dpresented to the spinntn mechanism.
as well understood by those skilled in the art, the drawing inechani'siii comprises a series of drawingrolls arranged in pairs between which the fibers to' be treated are dciiv'ered in the form of light roving to be drawn out or attenuated and delivered for the inning operation The action of the thawing rolls attenu-ates the roving or rovings and by the compression of each snoceedingpair of rolls flattens out the fibers, so that as the roving is delivered at the front rolls it is often too weak towithstand the spinning operation. This flattening or spreading of the fibers by the coi'nbi'n'ed pressure and drawing action of the rolls is well understood by those skilled in the art, and is a constant menace to the continuity of the yarn at the front rolls. I With these generally recognized facts in mind, the aims and purposes of the present invention are to provide means whereby the effect of the spreading action of the drawing rolls upon the fiber is largely counteracted, the fibers made to associate and hug more closely together, and delivered at the front rolls in a form best calculated to withstand the strain incident to the spinning operation, all of which will best be made clear from the following description and accompanying drawingof one form of means for carryingthe invention into practical effect, it being i'inde'r s'tee'd, however, that the vention is not restricted to the particulars shown, but in its true scope is defined by the claims.

For the purpose of making clear the action and purposes of the present invention, it is herein shown as "associated with the drawing rolls of a ring spinning fr'ame, and the fibers tobed-rawn and spun as formed in two separate rovings; but it is to be understood that the invention is not restricted to either of these conditions.

As usual in this class of machines, the back-drawing rolls 7 and 8 are rotated to draw the roving or rovings' from a source of supply, the middle drawing rolls 9 and 1 0 are rotated at a somewhat faster peripheral speed than the back rolls, and the front rolls 11 and 12 are driven at greater pe riph eral speed than the middle rolls, with the result that as the roving passes from the back to the front roll-s, it is drawno'ut or attenuated into its final form for receiving the twist or spin that takes place between the bobbin and the bite of the front drawing rolls. The drawing rolls press upon the fibers as they pass between the rolls, so that the fibers, *Jvl'iile beingdra xvn out, are also spread or flattened, thereby weakening the roving with the resjnitthat when delivered from the front rolls, the strain upon the roving caused by the spinning action, results in breakage. i
The present invention contemplates means to prevent this weakening of the fibrous strand or roving and inasmuch as the fibrous strand or roving is constantly being moved longitudinally of the drawing rolls, said means is given a movement coincident with that of the fib ous strand or roving as it tra els longitudinally of the rolls.
Mounted upon the traverse rod 6 is an arm 13 which projects between the back and middle drawing rolls in the path of travel of the fibrous strand or roving 14, so that as the strand or roving passes from the nip of the back rolls to the nip of the middle rolls, it meets the arm 13, and the fibers thereof which have become flattened or spread out by the action of the back rolls,
as indicated at a, Fig. 2, are rearranged into or fibers may be variously formed and mounted to move lengthwise ot the drawing rolls with the roving, and as shown in the illustrated embodiment of the invention, it comprises a guide member 15 having a guide eye 16 for the roving or rovings, and a slotted portion 17 by which the device may be secured to the traverse rail 6, as by the screw 18. The guide eye 16 in the guide member 15 may conveniently take the place of the old trumpet, and the slot 1'? in the guide member 15 provides a convenient means for the ad justment of the guide eye and consequently the arm 13. Various changes may be made in the details shown as the present embodiment of the invention, and the position of the de flector or arm 13. may be varied, it being preferably placed as close as convenient to the bite between the back rolls.

A roving controller comprising a memher having a guide eye, an arm extending from said member at one side of the guide eye and having an upwardly bent end, said arm being bent laterally with respect to the guide eye member to position the upwardly bent end of said arm in a vertical plane passing through the guide eye at right angles to the axis of the drawing rolls.
2. A roving controller for spinning machines, comprising a guide member having a guide eye, and a deflecting arm projecting from one side of said guide member and extending to a position opposite to and in a vertical plane passing longitudinally through the guide eye of said controller at right angles to the axis of the drawing rolls.
3. A roving controller for spinning machines, formed of a single piece of material bent'to form a guide'niember having a guide eye and an arm extending vfrom one side of said guide member and having an upwardly bent end, said arm being bent to one side to position the upwardly bent end into a position opposite to and in the vertical plane passing longitudinally through the guide eye at right angles to the axis of the drawing rolls.

A roving controller for spinning machines formed of a single piece of material bent to form a guide member having a downwardly opening slot and a guide eye, at the upper portion of said slot, an arm eX- tending from one side of the guide member and having its end bent upwardly, said arm between the said end and guide eye being bent laterally or to one side to position said end inthe vertical plane passing longitudinally through the guide eye at right angles to the axis of the drawing rolls.
