phragnr'l. Extending through the hole is a wire or other suitable suspending member 34 which is supported upon a tension member 35 secured to the supporting block 25. Secured to the armature at equal distances on each side ot' the member 3l are two cores 37, 37 which extend into the brass shells of the solenoids in juxtaposition to the adjustable cores Q0, 20. The upper ends vof the cords 37, 37 are in a straight line with and in substantially the same plane as the diaphragm 'l and the pivotal points of the armature 30. Attached to the armature 30 is a hardened steel. extension which projects from the casing 5 into the circular chamber 6 and is there attached to the diaphragm 7 The pivot members 28, 28, cores 37, 37 and extension 38 are secured tothe armature 30 preferably by welding. Ob viously this manner of mounting the armature 30 ,removes all unnecessary weight from the diaphragm, maintains it substantially balanced and provides a pivotal support of the least possible friction. The tensioning member tends always to hold the pivotal members 28 in the notches provided therefor and compensates for any wear which may take place in the engaging parts. The advantage of having the pivotal point of the armature 30, the lower ends of the cores 37,37 to which the moving force is applied, and the diaphragm. 7 which takes its movement from the movement of the armature, in substantially the same plane and the same straight line is that with the very slight movement offthe armature 30 the force is applied directly to the diaphragm 7 in substantially a straight line movement. The result of this is that practically the Whole of the applied force is utilized by moving the diaphragm to reproduce sound in accordance with the current changes to the electromagnets and lateral or resultant forces tending to warp or produce unnatural movements in the diaphragm are minimized.
A permanent magnet 40 of the conventional U or horseshoe shape has one of its legs secured to the upper face ot' the mounting plate 10 by means of screws el, 4l, the other of said legs being extended under the armature 30 and being unsecured. The reason that the lower leg is not secured is that it has been found to 'give as good results when y free and furthermore allows for a certain amountA of warping of the magnet Without interfering with the adjustment of the parts. A portion of the casing 5 is depressed as shown at to conform-to the lower leg of said magnet 4.0.
The end of the armature extension 38 is bent at right angles to the'body of the extension and is provided with a screw-threaded aperture adapted to receive a screw 46 diaphragm is seated upon a ring t7 formed oi rubber tubing and has'a second ring of the same material clamped against its opposite side by means of a face plate i8 which is secured to the wall of the chamber G and is provided with a horn supporting arm 49. The Jfacc plate 4S is secured to the wail of the chamber 6 by means ot ' machine screws 50, 50 entering from the back of the casing. The casing is provided with an inwardly projecting iiange portion 5l adapt ed to support a cover which is secured thereto by means of screws entering from the back. A strip of felt or rubber may be clamped between the cover and the flange 5l to make the structure air or water tight. lil/when mounted for use the device `is secured to thc wall in the position shown in Fig. l, and the assembling screws are inac-` c'cssible except when the receiver-'is removed from the wall. The bach face of the casing 5 is provided with a depression 5S in which is mounted a terminal block 59 supporting terminals GO, 60 to which the terminals of the solenoids l2, l2 are attached. By' bal ancing the armature so that the Weight thereof is .removed from ythe diaphragm there will be no damping eii'ect upon said diaphragm'due to the armature lever. The lever operatively connecting the diaphragm with thc electro-magnets being a multiplying one, the device may be worked with a very small air gap and a consequently larger eiiiciency. Furthermore, since the operative lever for the diaphragm is a multiplying one and has a pivotal point sub? stantially in alinement with the two electromagnets, extraneous `iars or vibrations will have but little disturbing eli'ect upon vthe balance of the instrument.
