entirety. The mechanism that ean thus be assembled outside and put into the niaehine :is a whole. also ineludes other deviees in addition to thosev above mentioned. AS here shown. eaeh rod l2 has eaeh o't' its ends bearing' against the innei` face of a bracket 2() and seeured in plaee bv a serew 23. as shown in Fig. 3. The eonstruetion is Snell that in'assen'iblinger the machine the key levers 11 and sleeves 19 are strung;` along" the rod 1;). whieh is then inserted between the two braekets 20 and seeured in plaee by the serews 23.
The keys l() are arranged in three rows.
as is usual in typewriters in whieh there arel three types on eaeh type bar, and of these the rear row is the highest and the front row lowest. as is also usual. All of those keiv levers 1l whose kevs are in the rar row are pivoted ion tlie rearniost one of the three bars 12: those key levers whose keys are in the niiddle row are pivoted on tlieniiddle one of said bars. and those whose kevs are in the liront row :im` pivoted on the Jforward one ot said rods. this arrangement being of eoiuse for the sake ol` nniloi'niitiy of levelajn'e. said rods being so disposed that all of ilie ki-.vs lll have substantially the saine leverage on their respeetive lin'Il-:s lil.
ln addition lo plat-iii;` the rods l! one in liront ol' another. l have also plaied, tliein :il ilill'erent elevations eori e:-poiiding lo the dille-reni elevations o''vthe several rows of li'evs lll. i have plaeed these rods thus in order that all ol the keys l() ni:| v have. not onli' the saine extent ot inotion but also the, saule diria-lion of inotioii. i l prel'er in this respei'l the arrangement shown in Fig', 1 where ezii'i oll the rods ll has its renier a liille below ilie upper siirl'aees ol: the eorresponding keys. when said keys are in i-ior nial position. and a little above the upper surlziee o'll ani' one ol` said keys when said l\;e v is in ils depressed position. `\\'ilh the i-als l2 disposed in tliisniainier. :zieh of the li'eyvs l0 hasv a substaniialliy vertieal i'iiotion. rtypewriter lv'ev levers have iisualljvv heretofore been pivoted :ill on the saine level. the pivots being usually in :i lower plane than the ke vs. 'l`he result ot this eonstruetion has been that the keys have had 'a niotion, noi vertieal. bnl in a palh downiiard and somewhat inelined toward the front ot' the niaeliine. :ind the keys-iii the rear row have iiioved in paths inore sharply inelined towai'd the liront than those of the lorward row.. B v llie arrangement shown'. all ot the keys move. as was said above. in substantially `vertieal paths. rlliis feature of a."- rane'inie' the l'uleruni rods 1:2 in the dill'erent elevationsl :is deseribed. is not essential to 'they sum-ess o't' the other l'eatures of nii' invention. liul l eonsider it to be of advantage.
As the s ,'st:n oinv type bars is narrower than the system ot keys, the key levers ll said levers and io a series of hooks siii alli' torined on the lower edge. ol a thm plate 2li, whieli plate is riveted to :i iliiekei.
plate 2T which is seeured by sere 28 to the bark plate ot' the base l of the traine. As shown in Fig'. if, the serews Q8 pass through slots 29 so as to niake the Compound plate '26, 2? adjustable up and down to reguh'ite the tension the springs.
The links 18 are preferably se torined :is to be readilyr diseonneetible. '4l-he lower parts of the type aetion. ineludi the. key levers. are assembled separateli' 'troni the upper part and it 'taeilitatesthe inaniit'aeture ot the inaeliine to have these links readil)Y diseonneetible.

Various changes can oe made in the details of construction and arrangement Witho`it departing from my invention.
1xWhat l claim as new and desire to secure hy Letters Tatent, is1- l. ln a front strike typewriting machine, the combination ol' a front strike type bar, a link extending from said type bar toward 'the rear of the machine, a suh-lever having en arm extending downward at an inclinaticnjtovvard the front of the machine and connected with said link, and said sub-lever having another arm extending toward the rear, a key lever of the lirst order and e push link connected with the rear end of said key lever and with said rearwar ly eX- tending arm of the suhdever.
2. in a front strike typevvriting machine, the combination of a series oi' front strike type bars, inks extending from said type 7oars toward the rear of the machine, aseries of sub-levers pivoted in a. straight row and having arnis extending downward and toward the front of the machine and connected with said links, said sub-levers also having arms extending toward the rear of the inachine, a series ofkey levers o the first order, and push links connecting the rear ends of said kev levers with said rearwardly extendingl arms.
ln a iront strike typevlriting machine, the combination o la' series o type bers, a series o sub-levers connected with said-type hars, a series of substantially straight key levers of the first order each having its rear end connected by an upright link with one of said sub-levers, and kevs mounted on said key levers in a plurality of rovvs at diierent elevations, the tulcruins of the key levers being arranged in transverse tiers, the lowest tier being nearest the front ot' the machine, and the highest tier being nearest the rear of the machine, the respective distances oi' said fulcriuns from the back ot' the machine being such as to give to the several rows of keys equal leverages on said sub-levers and. the keys that are situated at a higher elevation having the fulcrums ol', their key lcvers at a greater elevation than the 'nlcrinns of lower keys.
l. ln a front strike typeivriting machine, the combina-tion ol' a series o'i' front strike type bars pivoted in a segment, a series ot' sub-levers in 'the rear oi' said series ot' type bars, said sub-levers having arms extending Jfrom the pivots of said levers downward at an inclination toward the front of the niachine, links connecting .said arms with said type bars, Mose links that connect with type bars near the middle ot' the system extendingforward at a doivnivrard inclination and those links that connect with type bars near the ends oi lie j'stem extending toward the front of the mac ie an upward inclination whereby said sub-levers have a higher initial leverage on the type bars near the middle of the system than those near the end of the syst-ein and impart to said niiddle type bars greater acceleration.
ln a front strike typevvriting n ichine, the combination of a series of front strike type hars pivoted in a segment, a se ies of sub-levers pivoted in a straight line and having arms extending 'from 'their pivots and downward at an inclination toward said nient, links connecting said sub-levers with said type bars, some ol said links extending from said sub-levers to said type oars at an upward inclination and others at a doivnvvard inclination, a series of key levers, and links connecting said key levers with said sub-levers in such fashion as to afl'ord an acceleration of said sub-levers.
