Specification of Ile/sters Patent.
Patented Nov. 1c, 1915.
Application led May 13, 1914. Serial No. 838,331,
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, WILLIAM F. HonL'rKn, a citizen of the United States, yresiding at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in FogfSignals for Trolley-Lines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fog signals for trolley lines, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide simple, reliable and ei'licient means for preventing rear end collisions` due to the lossof current in fogs or darkness on trolley lines and to con'- tinuously ring a bell or sound an alarm in case of loss of current.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of simple construction which will be set in operation to continuously ring a bell when the current from the trolley has been lost. v
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which the figure is a side elevation and diagrammatic view of a signal made in accordance with this invention.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a base upon which is supported a `standard 2. Pivoted at 3 to the standard 2 is a contact arm 4, sai-d Contact arm being provided with a Contact plate 5 disposed .in position to be attracted by a magnet 6, provided With conductors a and b which lead to the trolley pole.l The contact arm 4: is provided at its opposite end with a contact point 7 disposed above a Contact plate 8 insulated at 9 from a supporting block 10. A spiral spring 11 is connected at one end to the contact arm 4 and Vat the opposite en'd to the base l and the tension of the spring 11 is sufficient to draw thescontact point 7 into contact with the plate 8 when the magnet 6 is demagnetized or the current is lost'to the trolley.' A conductor c leads from the contact point 7 to a battery 12, and from the battery 12 a conductor c leads to a bell. 13 of ordinary construction. A conductor e leads from a binding post 14 to the bell 13.
The operatmn of the invention maybe briefly described as follows: When the current is lost through the conductors a and b y to the trolley, the magnet 6 becomes demag netized and the spring 11 draws the contact point 7 into Contact with the plate 8, thus establishing a vcircuit/between the' contact point and the plate to the bell 13 through *he battery 12 and the bell 13 will ring constantly until the contact plate 5 is drawn down to the magnet 6.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the claim. I
What is claimed is V A signal device for preventing the'rear end collisions in the fog on trolley lines comprising a support, a contact arm being pivoted to said support, a magnet, conductors leading from the magnet to the trolley, a Contact plate on said arm disposed within the field of said magnet, a contact point on the opposite end of said contact arm, a contact plate having its end oli'set so as to form a spring, a coil spring for mal a contact between the point and spring plate when the magnet is demagnetized, a battery, a bell and electrical connections betweenL the point, spring plate, battery and bell.
In testimonyr whereof Iyaiix my signature inpresencev of two witnesses.
WILLIAM F. HOELTKE.
