APPARATUS FOR MAKING RECEPTACLES 0R CONTAINERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August an, 1914. Serial no. 857,645.
and State of NewYork, have invented new .and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Making Receptacles or Containers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates. to apparatus for making receptacles of paper, such as paraffined paper, for carrying liquids and the like, and which are commonly known as single service packages or containers, in which a sheet offmaterial is rolled into tubul '-lar form, preferably conical, with thesides or longitudinal edges overlapping and secured together, the tube 'beingclosed at one end to-constitute the bottom and the other.
end the top pinched together or collapsed f jand secured in such position to close the 'same. 1
. 'It is the object'of' the present invention to provide an apparatus to roll the sheet of material into tubular form with the longitudinal edges or sides overlapping and then to apply a-clamping strip thereto to secure.
said overlapping sides together. In the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved apparatus.
- Fig. 2 is a side elevation looking at the left of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 isa plan view. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the operative mechanism of the apparatus. Fig. 5 is a. perspective view of a portion'of the metallic clamping strip to show the manner of providing the clamping pron-gs thereon; and Fig. 6 is a perspective ,view of the paper feed mecha- DlSHL' Similar characters of reference designate like parts throughout the dilferent views of the drawings. a
in the embodiment of my invention T111187 trated inthe drawings, the operative mecha- 5 ,nism' is carried by .a suitable framework designated in a general way by F). A man 'drel or arbor-'5 around which a sheet of paper or the like is adapted to be wrapped is fixed to the framework to project forwardly therefrom, this mandrel being circular in crossfsection and in the form of. a truncated cone; that is, it tapers from the rear tothe forward end.
-,; A pair .of paper. supporting flaps 6 6 are connected to a. pair of pivoted arms 7 The conformation of the flaps is such that each will conform to substantially one-half of Patented Nov. 1%, 1915.
the circumference of the mandrel, so that when a sheet of paper carried by the flaps is wrapped around the mandrel it will lie snugly against the same, and the sheet" is of such size so that the longitudinal edges or sides overlap. These flaps are actuated by a pair of links 8 pivotally connected to the arms 7 and to one end of a rocker arm 9, the other end of the arm 9 carrying a roll .10 caused to engage with and follow a cam 11 by a, spring 12. The cam-11 is fixed to a rotatable shaft 13 driven in a suitable manner from the main driving shaft 14:, in the present instance by a sprocket chain 15.
The operation of the machine is automatic and to automatically feed sheets of paper between the paper supporting flaps and mandrel, I provide a vertically adjustable table 16 to support a pileof paper P, said table being guided in its vertical movement by a series of posts-17, in the present instance three in number, engaging in openings in lugs extending laterally from the table; these posts also serving to prevent lateral displacement of the pile. of paper. To support the table to have vertical adjustment, a
the shaft 21 is adapted to have independent .i'ota'tive movement and the table lowered or 1 adjusted at will.
To intermittently feed the paper between the paper flaps 6 and mandrel, 1 provide a pair of friction feed rollers 2-7 located bev tween the paper table and mandrel and mounted to rotate'on axes in a plane parallel fingers 29,
with the axis of the mandrel and with the biglii' of the rolls substantially in a plane with the uppermost sheet of paper on the pile. These rolls have meshing pinions 28 connected thereto which are operatively connected to and driven from the shaft 13. To feed the paper from the pile to the rolls 27,
provide resiliently supported vertical in the present instancetwo in number, the tips'of which fingers are provided with a. suitable friction material, such, as rubber. These fingers are slidably sup.- portcd by arms 30 adapted to have reciprocating movement transverse to the movement of the fingers, springs 31 causing the' fingers to resiliently engage with the upper surface of the top sheet of the pile. The arms 30 are slidably'supported in standard 32 fixed to the framework.
To actuate the arms 30 the ends of the arms opposite to the fingers 29 are connected by a member 33 connected to a slidably sup ported stem 34 having a downwardly extending forked portion 35 in which engages an offset or inclined portion 36 of a slidably supported rod 36. One endof this rod is connected to one arm of a lever 37 and actuated by a cam 39 fixed to the shaft with which engages a cam following roller 38 connected to the other arm of-thelever.
After a sheet of paper has been fed be tween the paper flaps and mandrel and pre- 1 vious to the flaps folding said paper around rod cooperating with the clamping plunger 54: to cause it to move toward and clamp a sheet of paper to the mandrel, said plunger being retracted by a spring 59.
As'stated, the overlapped edges of sides of the paper on the mandrel are secured together by a clamping strip. For this purpose I provide means-to intermittently feed a metallic strip S a predetermined distance adjacent the said overlapped sides of the aper on the mandrel and )rovide said str .L with suitable prongs to pass through the paper and be upset to secure said overlapped sides together. 'lheclainping strip S is car- I x ried by a reel 40.rotatablycarr1ed by a. pair of bracket arms 41 fixed to and projecting laterally from. the framework F. ,The strip from the reel passes over a guide roller 42 and between a'pair of contacting rollers 43,
44, one of said rollers,as 43, being provided with circumferentially disposed teeth or projections adapted to engage in circumferentially disposed recesses in the roller 44,
and as the strip is fed by said rollers the teeth will stamp out and offset a portion 5. These prongs are preferably'trian'gular in shape and alternate prongs are offset as clearly shown in Fig. 5. The roller/L3 is driven M mechanism actuated bythe main driving shaft 14, and consisting of a ratchet wheel thereof. forming prongs 45, as shown in Fig.
48 rotatable with the gear 47, a. spring in-- fiuenced pawl 49 cooperating with said ratchet wheel pivotally carriedby a link 50 hung on the shaft of the gear 47. This link is connected by a rod 51 to acrank arm 52 fixed to and rotatable with the shaft 14. As i the crank is swung upward with the'rotation of the shaft 14, the arm 50 will be lifted, the pawl riding over the teeth of the ratchet, and it swings downward the-pawl will engage with the "ratchet teeth rotating the ratchet and thereby the gears 47'and. rollers After a predetermined portion of the metallic strip S has been fed and provided with prongs, said clamping strip is caused to clamp the overlapped edges of the" paper wrapped-around the mandrel by a reciprocable ram R slidably carried in a head 60 forming a part of the framework, said ramv having movement toward and away from and cooperating with the mandrel to ,force the strip prongs through the over pped edge r=f the paper onthe mandrel a. l 11; set said prongs The alternate prongs on the strip are adapted to be upset or bent over in opposite directions, and for this purpose the mandrel has an inset :61 projecting slightly beyond the periphery of the mandrel, the top surface of said 'insetbeing beveled or inclining slightly from a point substa-ntially centrally thereof to the sides and in opposite directions, as clearly .shown in Fig. 1. Just previous to the clamping of the paper on the mandrel by the strip the strip is severed by a cutter member 62 adjustably connected to the ram cooperating'with a cutter member 63 at the-rear of the inset. The
ram is pivotally connected toone end of a walking beam 73 carried by the head 60and actuated by a cam 74 on a shaft 75 with which engages a cam following roller 75 carried by the other end ofthe walking beam. The shaft 75 is rotated .by the main driving shaft 14 through gears 77 and 78.
After the paper strip has been clamped together on the mandrel the folding 'fiaps,
