The invention to be hereinafter described relates to warping machines, and more particularly to the measuring means or warper clock which initiates operation of stopping mechanism when a desired length of warp or yarn has been wound upon the beam.
As well understood by those skilled in the art, the importance of providing a definite or predetermined length of yarn on the warp beam to be subsequently employed in the loom, has dictated that warping machines be provided with means whereby when the requisite or desired length of yarn has. been woundon the beam, that the machine be stopped. Various eXpedience have been devised to this end, and means have been provided, the parts of which can be so set that if undisturbed, the warping operation maybe accurately carried into effect and the machine stopped when the desired length of yarn has been wound. Disturbance of the parts of such devices is liable to occur, however, either through carelessness of operatives, unauthorized handling, or from other causes, and in such cases the length of yarn wound upon the beam will vary from that desired, and the recorded length thereof may not be true or, accurate. Indeed, under such disturbing'influences the stopping means may fail to be automatically actuated, or may be caused to act too soon,
WVith these considerations in view, the aims and purposes of the present invention are to provide means whereby the operative relation of the parts of said devicesmay be insured and maintained during the operation of the warping machine, so that a defias will be readilyunderstood.

For convenience in exploiting the present invention and making clear its construction and mode of operation, the invention is herein illustrated as associated and combined with the stopping means and warper clock of the patent to Rhoades, No. 624,5et1, dated May 9, 18,99, to which reference may be had,
but it is to be understood that it is not confined to the particular stopping means and warper clock of that patent but may be employed and combined. with various other types of such devices.

The measuring device or warper-clock for measuring and indicating the length of yarn wound upon the beam, may be of any usual or desired character, such, for instance,
as shown and described in the said Rhoades patent, and in exploiting, this feature of :the device, the warper-clock of that patent is illustrated in the drawings hereof. 7
Referring to said drawings, the upright shaft 16 may. be driven from some going part of the machine, as in said Rhoades patent, and carries a worm 17 for driving the warper-clock through the worm 18 connected thereto. Connected to rotate in unison with the Worm l is he piral y-greete shaft 19, which maytake the form of a worm, as indicated in Figs. '1 and 2.

When the machine is to be started to effect the warping operation, the finger 12 is applied tothe worm or spirally-grooved shaft 19, and as the said shaft 19 is slowly rotated through the'means hereinbefore indicated, the finger 12travels along its shaft 18 until the end thereof drops into the recess 20 of the worm, whereupon the head 15 of the stop drops in front or to the left of the stud or roll 11 on the vibrator arm, whereupon themachine will bebrought to rest as fully set forth in the Rhoades patent hereinbefore called to attention. ' Obviously the finger 12 is liable to become disengaged from the worm or spirallygrooved shaft 19, and to obviate this there is provided a weighted arm 21 depending from a sleeve 22-on a stud or shaft 23, Fig. 2, and said sleeve 22 has extending therepiece 24: which, under the action of the weighted arm 21, is caused to maintain itself in contact with the finger '12 and hold the same in operative relation with the worm 19 as the finger is moved longitu dinally of its support 13 by the said worm.
It will happen at times, through carelessness of the operative, or through unauthorized handling, or it may bethrough the vibrations of the machine itself, that the sleeve 22 carrying the weighted arm 21 may be turned upon its supporting "stud or shaft 23 and permit the bearing piece to become disengaged from the finger 12, so that the said finger may fail to travel continuously on its support 13 as the worm 19 is rotated; V This interruption of the travel ofthe finger may be only temporary, or it may be disengaged altogether from the worm 19, but in'any event, it will be evident thatsince the warp beam is continued in its rotative 'movement to wind the yarn thereon, and the clock is a true record of the length of yarn placed upon the beam will not be'furnished by the clock. The stopping mechanism under these conditions'may be caused to act either prematurely or too late. Thus the length of yarn upon the beam becomes indeterminate, and if this be the loom, and result'in considerable loss. One of the purposes of the present invention, therefore, is to overcome this liability of the finger being disengaged from its operating means, such as the worm 19, and to insure that when the warping machine is started to wind the warp or yarn upon the beam, that it as'well as the clock or measuring means will continue in operation until the beam has been properly wound, whereupon a predetermined amount arm 28 of of yarn will have beenplaced upon the beam and the'clockmay be provided with means to indicate the amount. v
As one simple means to the ends' noted, the sleeve 22 and stud or shaft'23 are provided .with mutually co-acting means to maintain the bearing piece 24: in operative relation with the finger 12 as the latter moves throughout its range of travel. In other words, means are provided so that when the finger 12 has been placed in engagement with the worm 19 and the bearing piece 24 has been placed in operative relation thereto so that the finger 12' cannot be disengaged from the worm, the means contemplated by the invention locks the bearing piece 2a in said position and maintains it in such position during the entire traveling movement of the finger 12, the result being that neither through the jar of themachine nor through carelessness of the operative or unauthorized handling can the operative relation of the clock and its finger cooperating devices be disturbed, so that the required and desired length of yarn will always be placed upon the beam. A simple form of means to the above ends consists in providing'the sleeve 22 and stud or'shaft 23each with an opening or slot so that when the bearing piece 24: is in operative relation with the finger 12, such openings or slots are properly related to receive a locking device, such asa pin or stud 25, Fig. 2. This locking stud or pin 25 may be conveniently formed as indicated by Fig.2, and'be provided with a head 26 to rest upon the sleeve 22 when passed through the openings of said sleeve and studor shaft, and to prevent withdrawal of said pin by unauthorized ersons it is provided with an opening 2'? through which may be passed the a lock 29. This lock 29 may be conveniently formed as a padlock of ordinary construction, so that when engaged with the opening27 of the locking pin 25 and properly secured, it will be impossible for anyone unprovided with a key to disturb the operative relation of the clock and bearing finger 12.
In operation, the finger 12 will be moved opposite a part of the worm 19 appropriate to the length of yarn to be placed upon the beam, and will then be engaged with said worm. The bearing piece 24 will then be placed in position as indicated by Figs. 1
and 2 and then the locking pin 25 will secure the sleeve 22 and bearing piece in the as sumed position. When the beam has been fully wound and the machine has been stopped through the'instrumentalities hereinbefore described, the person carrying the key to the lock 29 may manipulate the same to permit withdrawal of'the locking pin 25,
whereupon the parts may be'res'et for-another winding of the yarn uponJa beam.
While the locking pin 25 and the lock 29 constitute simple and effective means for the purposes hereinbefore noted, it is to be understood that other devices which will serve to lock or maintain the bearing piece 24c in operative relation With the finger 12 so that the latter shall maintain its cooperative relation with the Warper-clock during the entire Wind of the beam, may be employed Within the true scope of the actual in vention.
