MATTHEW wnnnnnn sWABB, or JOHNSTOWN, PENNSLYVANIA.
' COPY;HOLZDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATTHEW detachably connecting the same to'the knob of the cylinder of a typewriter carriage,
whereby as the carriage moves transversely of the machine, and an intermittent motion imparted to the cylinder ofthe carriage, the copyholder will correspondingly move.
Another object of the; invention is to provide a copyholder, whereby the copy is held in its proper position, and eachline to be copied, and each letter and word of each line indicated, so that a facsimile of the copy may be made on the typewriten' In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope ofwhat is claimed.
The invention comprises further features I and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :'Figure 1 is a view showing the front portionof a typewriter and a portion of the carriage, illustrating the improved copyholder. connected'to the knob'of the cylinder of the typewriter carriage. Fig. 2 is, an end view of the copyholder. Fig. 3 is a plan view.' Fig. 4 is a rear View. Fig, 5'is a sectionalview transversely of the copyholden Fig. 6. is .an' enlarged detail view of the clamping means for attaching the copyholder to the knob of the cylinder of a typewriter carriage. Fig. 7
is a plan view of the structure shown in Fig.-
6 illustrating the clamps 43. Fig. 8 is a View in end elevation illustrating the ratchet 50 and the mechanism cooperating therewith. Fig. 9 is a fragmentary plan view, more clearly illustrating the stops 58 and 60.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates a base member having rubber feet 2, and rising from the base member is a socket 3, in which a vertical standard 4:
W. Swans, a citizen of the United States, residing at; Johnstown, in the coi-uity of'Carnbria and V Specification of Letters Patent. Patgnted N 16 1915, Applicationfiled Scptemherfl, 1914. Serial No. 862,14 J. 7
is adjustablyheld by a set screw 5. A rectangular frame 6 is'secured at its rearporfl- 7 tion by means of a screw? to the upper end of the standard Braces 8 connect the end pieces 9 of the rectangular frame 6 and said standard, thereby bracing the fra ne 6 rel tive to the standard. Secured by screws 10 to the end pieces 9 and rising vertically therefrom are posts 11, which are connected by the longitudinal strips 12 and 13, by means ofthe screws 1 1. The adj acentfaces of the strips 12 and 13 are V-shaped, thereby forming tracks for the V-shaped groove rollers 15 ofthe truck or carriage 16. This carriage comprises two plates 17 spaced apart, with the rollers lfi-between them on pins, which are mounted in bearings of saidplates. The copyholding carriage 18 is provided with a rearwardly and centrally disposed extension 19 having an integral collar 20, and a' portion of the extension beyond the collar 20 eXtendsthrough the plates 17 and provided with a nutf21, thereby connecting the copyholding carriage to the'carriage or truck 16. A cylinder 22 has its pintles 23 mounted in bearings 24 of the ends of the carriage 18. Connected to the end of the carriage 18 are U-shaped end plates 25, and connecting said plates are small rods 26 and 27, on which rollers 28 and 29 are mounted.
These rollers act to hold the copy against the 27 extend, thereby securing the guard 34 in place. The guard 32 is provided with an elongated slot 36, and a scale 3'7, with which an indicator or pointer 38 coiiperates, to indicate each letter of each word of the copy, so as to render it easy for the operator to make a facsimile of the copy upon the sheet in the typewriter.
' One of the pintles 23 of the cylinder 22 has a sleeve 39 secured to it by a set screw 40. Pivoted by a screw 41 in a bifurcation ofthe sleeve or member 39 are the shanks 42' of the clamps 43. of said clamps 43 are of such a. shape as to I engage opposite grooves 45 of the knob 46 of The adjacent edges deta'chnient'of said clamps. It will. be ob served that as the typewriter carriage moves transversely the carriage l8 and the truck 16' w1ll correspondmgly move, and the pointer or indicator 38 'willindicate each' letter and each word of each line of the copy as it is written. When the typewriter carriage reaches the end of a line, the platen roller or cylinder is given a partial revoluble movement, at the same tune the typewriter fcarriage is returned to its normalposition for beginning a new line, and as this partial rota y, movement is imparted to the platen roller, the copy roller'is correspondingly" rotated. In this manner a facsimile of the.
copy mayreasily be made.
Also upon one of the pintles 23 of the cylinder or roller is a ratchet wheel 50,
and pivoted at 51 to one'end of the carriage 18 1s a lever havingv a pawl 53 for engagement wlth said ratchet. 7 Connected to j the end 514: of the-lever 52 is a cord or cable 55,'which passes through an opening 56 of the arm 57.- A'stopdevice 58 is fixed to the carnage -18 to limit the backward movement of the lever there being a spring 59 to'return the lever 52 to its normal posi tlon in contact with the stop 58. A second stop 60 is adj'ustably mounted on the caris designed to be connected to a foot pedal (not shown), or to the spacing bar (not shown) of said typewriter, whereby a requisite intermittent motion may be imparted to the cylinder or roll 22. This ratchet mechanism for imparting an intermittent motion to the roller or cylinder 22 is used only when the clamping members are not connected to the knob of the platen roller of the typewriter.
The invention having been set forth,.what
is claimed as new and useful is 1. In comblnation with a typewriter havinga platen roller, a supporting frame having a carriage guide, a copy 7 holding carriage lncludlng a copy holding platen roller .mounted in said guidefsaid copy holding and typewriter platenrollers being axially arranged, said copy holding platen roller carrying clamping means at one end 'to clamp, the knob of the platen roller ofthe typewriter, so that the copyroller will refor making facsimiles of the copy. 7
2. In comb nation wlth a typewrlt'er hav-, mg a platen roller, a copy holder compris mg a frame, a copy. holdingcarriage and ,platen lollei 'mo inted on the frame for spond to every movement of the platen roller 1:
transverse movement "thereof," both of the platen rollers being axially arranged-and detachable connections between the copy holding platen roller and a; knob of the platen roller of the typewriter-J 3. In combination with a typewriter having aplaten roller, a copy holder compris- Y.
"cured on one of the pintles of the copy roller, pivotedclamping'jaws carried by the sleeve, and a set screw for adjusting the aws toward each other, wherebythe knob may be clamped therebetween.
L111 combination wlth a typewriter having a platen roller, a copy holder comprismg a frame, a copy holding carriage and platen roller mounted on the frame for transverse movementthereof, both of said platen rollers being axially alined'and detachable connections between the copy holding platen roller and a knob of'the platen roller of the typewriter, and means for adjusting said frame-to suit typewriters of different heights.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
