Y IMPROVEMENT'IN BED-CLOTHES RUNNERS.

Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 116,013, dated June 20, 1871.

To all whom it may concern: Y

Be it known that'I, JOHN BIRHENHHAD, of Canton, of the countyT of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have made a new and useful invention having reference to beds; and I-do hereby declare the sameto be fully described l in the followingspeciiication and represented I an infant or young child, while asleep in a bed,

from throwing off the bed-clothes or becoming uncovered. To this end I combine with the mattress A and the Sheet, blanket, Coverlet, or bedlclothing two retainers orelastic bands, B B, provided at their ends with hooks C C to hook into the bed at its bottom and into the sheet or bed-coverlet. To the hooks C to enter the bed-clothing, or to the band near suchV hooks, I apply a ap or guard, AD, of leather,

to extend overy the points of the hook so as to prevent such, when hooked into a sheet .or coverlet, from accidentally doing injury to a person or catching in the clothes thereof. The two clothing-retainers, made as described, are to be'applied to opposite edges of the bed and to hook into the bed-clothing, all being as represented in the drawing. Each retainer` may consist of aV single elastic'band, a'gu-ard, as explained, and a hook for attaching the retainer to the bed-covering, and such 'retainer may be sewed or fastened directly to the bed -or mattress.

vThe retainers, being elastic, will not interfere with the breathing or comfort of the child.

Y They will allow of his Vturning in bed and of raising the bed-clothin g more or less, although they will prevent him from becoming uncovered during his struggles while asleep or awake.

I claim- As a new article of manufacture, the bedclothes retainer, made 1n manner and for use JOHN BTHKHNHEAD;
