Y. SAKAl.
VAPOR ELECTRIC DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 14. 1912. RENEWED JUNE 26.1915.

INVENTOR W (Kw/ ITNESSES :q i I BY ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
YASUDIRO SAKAI, OF EAST PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC AND MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYL- VANIA.
VAPOR ELECTRIC DEVICE.
Application filed June 14, 1912, Serial No. 703,662. Renewed June 26, 1915.
paratus such as mercury-vapor rectifiers and similar devices, and it has for its object to provide a device the anodes and other terminals of which may be readily lnserted and removed.
In the single figure of the accompanying drawing, which is a vertical sectional View through a portion of a rectifier constructed in accordance with my invention, the rectifier is shown as comprising a metal casing 1 and a cover 2 that is secured upon the easing so as to render the same vacuum tight, the casing containing a pool of mercury 3 Or any other suitable material constituting a vaporizable electrode or cathode. Extending through the cover, and for some distance into the vacuum chamber,is an anode 4 that comprises a water-tight outer shell 5, having an enlarged inner end 6 and a lat eral inlet tap 7 at its outer end, and an inner-tube 8 that is loosely surrounded by the outer shell and terminates in and opens into the enlargement at the lower end thereof. The upper end of the inner tube extends beyond the upper end of the outer shell and constitutes an outlet for any suitable cooling medium that may be circulated through the anode.
The anode is insulated from the cover 3 by means of an insulating bushing 9 having a frusto-conical portion 10 that is seated against a correspondingly shaped portion of the cover and is clamped against the same, to provide a vacuum tight joint, by means ofa sleeve or nut 11 that is screwed into the cover and is seated upon an outer shoulder 12 on the insulating bushing. The
' v outer shell of the anode is provided with a tapered or frusto-conical shoulder 13 thatis tapered toward the outer end thereof and is seated against a correspondingly shaped inner portion of the insulating bushing, the said parts being clamped Specification of Letters Patent.
bushing seated in the casing and together, to pro Patented Nov. 9, 1915.
Serial No. 36,553. I
vide a vacuum-tight joint, by means of a nut let that is threaded upon the outer end of the anode shell and is seated upon an inner shoulder 15 upon the insulating bushing, suitable slightly compressible or elastic washers 16 being interposed between the nut and shoulder to permit of slight expansion and contraction of the parts without subjecting them to undue strain. The spaces between the cover and the insulating bushing and between the insulating bushing and the anode are preferably partially filled with mercury which assists in forming vacuum tight joints between the said parts.
It will be apparent from the drawing and foregoing description that, in order to remove the anode, it is only necessary to remove the inlet tap 7 and the nut 14 at the upper end thereof and then to withdraw the anode from the insulating bushing, this being possible by reason of the provision of the outwardly tapering frusto-conical shoulder upon the portion of the anode that is located within the vacuum chamber.
I claim as my invention:
1. A vapor-electric device comprising a casing, a terminal member extending through and into the casing and having an enlarged inner end and an intermediate outwardly tapered shoulder, an insulating surrounding the terminal member where it enters the casing, and means for clamping the said shoulder against the said. bushing.
2. A vapor-electric device comprising a casing, a terminal member extending through and into the casing and having an outwardly tapering shoulder, an insulating bushing surrounding the terminal member .where it enters the casing and against which casing, a terminal member extending In testimony whereof, I have hereunto 10 through and into the casing and having an subscribed my name this 31st day of May outwardly tapering shoulder located within 1912. i
the casing, an insulating bushing surrounding the terminal member where it enters YASUDIRO SAKAI.
the casing and against which the said shoulder is seated, and a nutupon the outer end \Vitnesses: of the terminal member for clamping the OTTO S. SGHAIRER, said shoulder against the insulatmg bushing. H B. B. HINES.
