FOUNDRY, or PHILADELPHIA,PENN$YLVANIA, A CORPORATION OFKPENN- SYLVANIA.
TYPE-CASTING MACHIN Application filediDeceniber 7, 1911a To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, RoBnarPnToN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cyn- 'wyd, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type- Casting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my said' invention is to provide an attachment for automatic type casting machines for the purpose of forming a: distinguishing mark, such as, the foundry trade mark, upon the side of the type during the process of casting in such a manner as to not interfere with the rapid and automatic operation of the machine, all! as will: be here and after morefulily described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereofand' on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a side elevation of an: au-
tomatic type casting machine embodying'my said invention, Fig. 2 a view chiefly in end elevation, but showing the metal pot in sec- In said drawings the portions marked A represent the bed or frame of the machine, B the type carrier, C the type holding device or clamp, and D a lever carrying the die for forming the trade mark impression on the type.
The general construction and arrange ment of the bed A, type carrier B, and clamp C, is substantially the same as shown and described in my Patent 989,997 of April 18, 1911, and, therefore, needs no general description except as may be incidentally required in describing the operation of the parts constituting my present invention.
The lever D is mounted in a suitable recess in type carrier B and is supported on a pivot 10, located near the forward end of said type carrier. A spring 11, is interposed in an off-set portion of the recess in type carrier B, under the opposite end of said lever D, and normally tends to hold said end of said lever in an elevated position. A die Specificationof Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1915'.
Serial No. 684 467.
(Z is mounted on asliding head12, which 7 head is mounted to move vertically in a way formed in the type carrier and is connected" to the lever D by means of a pivot 13. A
hardened plate 1%, is set into the underface; of type carrier B, bemg'secured in pos1t1on by means of screws 15 extending through from the top side and engaging screw threadedperforati'ons in: said platen Said plate 14 is formed with a perforation, through which the die (Z is adapted to reciprocate.
The operation is as follows: The plunger ed by means of a screw-threaded connection- 1n a socket in a lug 23 on the topof lever D at the end opposite its pivot. The operating cam 25v operates said lever 20 to depress lever D and the die d carried thereby so that said die will project through plate 14 into the type mold, formed by the recess in bed A, the type ejector 26, and the hardened plate 14:. The molten metal is forced into said mold from metal pot 30, as is well understood,-and as is described in my patent before referred to, and the type is cast around the end of the die which has the trade mark cut therein as indicated in Fig. 6. After the cast has been'made the cam 25 reaches a point in its contact with lever 20 where its form will lift finger 21 and permit spring 11 to act to elevate lever D and withdraw the die (Z from the mold. The movement of said cam continues and operates to withdraw the type carrier B to a position where its front end will be behind the mold. At the same time the type ejector 26 is forced upwardly, by the mechanism comprising lever 35 and cam 36, as shown and well understood, to a point on a level with the top face of bed A. The type carrier is then forced forward, carrying said type with it, which is forced through the several trimming devices and ejected in its finished condition from the machine, as in the ma chine of the patent above referred to, or-in any approved manner. In the meantime the plate 1% is again brought to position to form the top wall of the mold for another casting shown in Fig. 3, and the cast is made. The
operation is repeated continuously and automatically so long as the metal in pot may hold out, or remain in condition for casting, or until the supply desired is provided. By this means a trade mark may be cast on the side of the type, as indicated in Fig. 6, without interfering with the automatic operation of the mechanism.
Having thus fully described my said invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. An automatic type casting machine comprising a type carrier, mechanism for operating said type carrier, a trade mark die mounted on a pivoted lever in said carrier, and means for operating said die to project the same into the mold during the process of casting and withdraw the same from the mold when the cast is finished, substantially as set forth.
2. An automatic type casting machine comprising a type carrier adapted to form one side of the mold, a marking die carried. by said type carrier in line with the part thereof which serves as the top of the mold, and means for projecting said die into said mold during the process of casting and withdrawing it after the casting is completed, substantially as set forth.
3. An-automatic type casting machine com- Copies of this patent may be obtained for prising a reciprocating type carrier adapted to form one side of the mold, a marking die mounted to reciprocate in said type carrier, and means for projecting said die into the mold and withdrawing it therefrom, sub-' stantially as set forth.
l. An automatic type casting machine comprising a reciprocating type carrier, mechanism for operating the same, a pivoted lever mounted in a recess in said type carrier,-a 4
5. In an automatic type casting machine,-
the combination with the reciprocating type carrier, of a marking die carried thereby,- and means forprojecting said marking die into the mold and holding it therein during the process of casting and withdrawing it therefrom after the casting is completed, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this 18th day of November, A. I).
nineteen hundred and eleven.
