To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, ANDREW BENSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Batavia, inthe county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumping-Wagons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to material containing and depositing apparatus, and pertains more particularly to dumping wagons. Such apparatus, and especially dumping wagons, are usually subject to the disadvantage that considerable space must be left betwen the bottom of the material container and the surface on which the material is tobe dumped; and it is one of the objects of the present invention to produce an apparatus of the kind stated which will not have this disadvantage, i. e. to produce an apparatus in which the bottom of the container is located near the surface on which the material is to be deposited.
Another object of the invention is to produce an apparatus of the kind stated which can be used with safety, being under absolute control of the operator at all times.
The herein stated objects are attained by means of a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention embodied in a dumping wagon; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a tripping device; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the wagon, partly broken away; Fig. 4: is a cross section on the line st4: of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a view similar to the last preceding showing the parts in another position.
Referring specifically to the drawings, the dumping body of the wagon is composed of two opposite longitudinal sections 10 which are pivotally hung so that they mayspread to dump the material. These sections of the wagon body or material container have trunnions 11. at their ends which are supported in bearing brackets 12 carried by a rectangular frame 13 made of steel channels and surrounding the sections. The frame 13 is supported by front and rearend plates 14: and 15, respectively, mounted on, and rising from bolsters 16. v The wheels of the wagon are shown at 17 in Fig. 1. The following mechanism is provided for.
locking in wagon box sections 10 in closed or carrying position: On the front end of the sections, near the bottom thereof, are studs 20 and 21, the former being on one section and serving as a latch keeper and the latter being on the other section. On the stud 21 is pivoted a latch bar 22 having a recess 23 adapted to receive the stud 20 when the sections are closed, and thus lock the sections in closed position. To the free end of the latch bar 22 is connected, by a pin 24L, one end of a lifter rod 25, the other end of said rod being connected by a pin,
26 to one end of a lever 27 having atvits other end a hook 28, and pivoted intermed iate its ends on a stud 29 carried by the front cross member of the frame 13. This cross member also carries a stud 30, located below the stud 29, and serving as the pivot or fulcrum of a lever 31. of this lever 31 is connected by a link 32 to the stud 21. The upper end of the lever 31 is connected by a link 33 to an arm 34 fast on a rock-shaft 35, supported in bearings 36 carried by one of the side members of the frame 13. To thestud 20 is pivotally connected the lower end of a link 37 having its upper end connected to the upper end of the lever 31 by a pin or stud 38 whereby the connection between said lever and the link 33 is made.
WVhen the wagon box sections 10 are closed as shown in Fig. 4, the latch bar22 hooks over the stud 20, and the lever 31 is in vertical position, the link 32 extending upward between the lower end of the lever and the stud 21, and the link 37 extending down The lower end arm 36% and the link 33, said stud projecting from the latter parts a suiiicient distance so that the hook may engage the same. The rocker arm 34 and the link 33 form a toggle connection between the shaft 35 andthe up-' perend of the lever 31. When the wagon box sections are closed, the pivot pin 39 connecting the parts 33 and 34 forming the toggle is slightly above the shaft 35 and the pin 38, the hook end 28 of the lever 27 seating on this pin 39 as already described. The lever 31 is now held against swinging in adirection to open the wagon boX sections. To open said sections the lever must be operated so that its upper end swings outward or to the left as in Fig. iand its lower end inward or to the right, but before the lever an be thus swung, the toggle must be broken. The toggle cannot be broken by bringing the pin 39 higher up with respect to the shaft 35 and the pin 38 because the lever prevents this. The lever 27 cannot swing in a direction to carry its hook end 28 upward of the pin 39 by reason of the connection 25 of the lever with the latch bar 22 and the shape of the hook.
It will be evident from the foregoing that the wagon box sections 10 cannot be swung open until the latch bar 22 is disengaged from the stud 20 and the lever 31 is re leased. This release is effected by the following parts: Alongside the drivers seat 18 is mounted a hand lever 40 having a latch H designed to lock said lever to a sector L2- having bevel gear teeth which are in mesh with a bevelgear at?) on the shaft The hand lever and the sector are loosely and independently mounted on a shaft 4%, and the former also has a latch i?) for locking the same in fixed position. When the hand lever is locked to the sector 42 and operated, the shaft through the gear i3, is rocked, and it can be locked in any desired position by the latch 45. Alongside the drivers seat is also mounted a trip device comprising a foot lever 46 fulcrumed on the front plate H and having a connection at 4:7 with one end of a lever lS also fulcrumed, at il to the front plate. The other end of the lever 4L8 is connected to the lower end of a vertically slidalole bar having at its upper end a lateral arm 50. The bar is guided by a pin 51 carried by the front cross bar of the frame 13 and working in a vertical slot 52 in the bar. The arm 50 is located above the pin 39 and seats on the adjacent ends of the toggle members 33 and 3t connected by said pin, when the wagon box sections 10 are closed as shown in Fig. i.
As hereinbefore described the hook end 28 of the lever 27 must be swung down in order to release the latch bar 22 to unlock the wagon box sections 10, and the lever 81 must be unlocked before the sections can swing open, the toggle members 33 and 3% locking said lever. the arm 50 has swung the lever 27 in a direction to disengage the latch bar from the stud 20. The lever 31 is also released and. swung to start the opening movement of the sections and the weight of the material in the sections forces the same apart and is dumped. The trunnions 11 of the wagon lJOX sections are so located that the weight of the material forces the same open when they are released, and they remain open until the hand lever is operated to restore the parts to the position shown in Fig. l.
The locking devices for the wagon box sections 10 may be duplicated at the rear ends thereof, and at this end of the wagon is a tool box As the locking devices are at the ends of the sections, leaving the space below the sections entirely unobstructed, the bottom of the latter can be located low down on the running gear of the wagon so as to be close to the surface on which the material is to be di'imped.
I claim 1. The combination of a material container comprising opposite sections pivotally supported to spread and dump, a. latch pivoted to one of the sections, a keeper for the latch on the other section, a support for the sections, lever pivoted to the support and having a connection with the latch for releasing the same from its keeper, a lever pivoted to the support, links connecting the last mentioned lever on opposite sides of its pivot with the respective sectionsof the container, a rock-shaft, a toggle connection. between the rock-shaft and one end of the last mentioned lever, the free end of the first mentioned lever seating on the joint of the toggle, means for breaking the toggle, and means for operating the rock-shaft.

The combination of a-material container comprising opposite sections pivotally supported to spread and dump, a latch pivoted to one of the sections, a keeper for the latch on the other section, a support for the sections, a lever pivotedto the support and having a connection with the latch for releasing the same from its keeper, a lever pivoted to the support, links connecting the last mentioned lever on opposite sides of its pivot with the respective sections of the container, a single locking means for both levers, and means for controlling the secondmentioned lever.

The combination of a material container comprising opposite sections pivotally supported to spread and dump, a latch pivoted to one of the sections, a keeper for the latch on the other'section, a support for the sections, a lever pivoted to the support and having a connection with the latch for releasing the same from its keeper, a lever pivoted to the support, links connecting the last-mentioned lever on opposite sides of its pivot with the respective sections of the con-- tamer, a shaft, a toggle connection between the shaft and one end of the last-mentioned lever, the free end of the first-mentioned lever seating on the joint of the toggle, and means r'or breaking the toggle. 9. The combination of a material container comprising opposite sections pivotally supported to s read and dump, a latch pivoted to one of tlGSGGtiOIlS, a keeper for the latch on the other section, a support for the sections, 'a'lever pivoted to the support and havin a connection with the latch for releaslng the same from its keeper, a lever pivoted to the support, links connecting the last-mentioned lever on opposite sides of its pivot with the respective sections of the con tainer, a shaft, a toggle connection between the shaft and one end of the last-mentioned lever, the free end of the first-mentioned lever seating on the joint of the toggle, and a trip device for breaking the toggle, said device comprising an arm engaging the joint of the toggle, a slide carrying the arm, and an actuating lever operatively connected to the slide.

The combination. of a material container comprising opposite sections pivotally supported to spread and dump, a latch pivoted to one of the sections, a keeper for the latch on the other section, a support for the sections, a lever pivoted to the support and having a connection with the latch for releasing the same from its keeper, a lever pivoted to' the support, links connecting the last-mentioned lever on opposite sides of its pivot with the respective sections of the container, a shaft, a toggle connection between the shaft and one end of the last-mentioned lever, the free end of the first-mentioned lever seating on the joint of the togle, and means for breaking the toggle, said means also engaging the free end of the first-mentioned lever for actuating the same to release the latch.

The combination of a material container comprising opposite sections pivotally supported to spread and dump, a latch pivoted to one of the sections, a keeper for the latch on the other section, a support for the sections, a lever pivoted to the support and having a connection with the latch for releasing the same from its keeper, a lever pivoted to the support, links connecting the last-mentioned lever on opposite sides of its pivot with the respective sections of the container, a shaft, atoggle connection between the shaft and one end of the last-mentioned lever, the free end of the first-mentioned lever seating on the joint of the toggle, and a trip device for breaking the toggle, said device comprising an arm engaging the joint of the toggle and also the free end of the first-mentioned lever for actuating the same to release the latch, a slide carrying the arm and an actuating lever cperativeljv connecte to the slide.
