NUT-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented NOV. 9, 1915.
Application filed. OctoberS, 1913, Serial No. 794,251. Renewed July 24, 1915. Serial No. 41,800.
To all whom it may Concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN R. TALLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Algona, in the county of Kossuth and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Nut-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in nut locks, and the primary object is to provide a device of this character which will positively lock a nut in place to prevent casual disengagement thereof in use. r
A further object of the invention resides in providing a key on the nut adapted for engagement with a slot in the bolt, and a still further object resides in providing an improved means in connection with the nut for retaining the key out of view when same is effectively disposed.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manu facture and one which is very efi icient and useful in operation.
lVith these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical section therethrough, partly in elevation. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a nut embodying my improvements and disclosing parts separated. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section through the device applied.
In describing the invention I shall refer to the drawing, in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which 1 indicates a bolt of the usual or any pre-' ferred type having the longitudinal slots 2 in the threaded portion thereof at diametri' cally opposite points thereon. Adapted for engagement with the threaded port-ion of the bolt is a nut 3 of hexagonal or other de sign, one face of whichhas a portion or strip removed therefrom to form a separable plate 4. This plate, it will be understood, when applied to the referred-to face of the nut, will complete the formation of the latter.
Extending through the nut from the face having the strip removed therefrom tov the bore ofthe same is a threaded channel 5 with which is engaged a screw or threaded key 6. The outer end of the channel 5 is chamfered so as to receive the head of the screw 6 in countersunk relation therein, and when the head is so positioned the end of the screw is adapted to be received in one of the slots 2 of the bolt. From this construction it will be seen that after the nut has been properly turned home on the bolt the same is positioned to permit the channel 5 to register with a slot 2 in the bolt. The screw may then be introduced through the nut to obviously lock the latter in its eifective position on the bolt.
In order to prevent the casual disengagement of the screw 6 and also to hide the same from view, I provide a means for re movably supporting the removed plate or strip 4 in position on the face of the nut from which same is removed. To this end the last referred to face of the nut is provided with a threaded opening 7 adjacent one corner thereof and the plate 4: is provided with an opening 8 adapted to register with the opening 7 when the plate is properly applied on the nut. An additional screw 9 is adapted for introduction through the opening 8 to be engaged with the threaded opening 7 whereby to pivotally support the plate a on the nut. In order to limit the swinging movement of the plate on the nut in one direction, the one face of the nut is provided with a cavity 10, the inner wall of which is beveled, while the inner face of the plate 4. is provided with a projection or lug 11 adapted to be received in said cavity. The one end of the projection, contacting with the one wall of the cavity, obviously limits the swinging movement of the plate 4, retaining the latter in such position as to complete the formation of the nut proper. When it is desired to disengage the nut, the plate a must first be raised or swung on its pivot, so that engagement may be had with the screw 6 whereby to disengage the latter from the bolt. The nut may be removed as usual. I
From the foregoing description of the construction of my improved device the operation thereof will bereadily understood,
and it will be seen that I have pr vided a device which: is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efiicient and useful in operation.
W hat I claim is:
1. The combination with a bolt having a longitudinal slot in the threaded portion thereof; of a nut having a transverse opening therein, a member insertedinthe trans verse opening of a nut for engagement With the slot in the bolt-to loek tlie'forin'eron the latter and a plate piy'oted to one face of said nut to conceal said member, said plate covering the entire face of the nut.
The cornbination: with" a bolt having longitudinal slot in the? threaded portion thereof; ot a nut having a transverse open ingi therein temnnating' at its outer end in one face: of the nut; the-last mentioned faceof said nut vary-ingrinsize from: the other faces thereof, -amember inserted throughthe opening-of thenut to engage saidslot and secure thenuaon the b'oltt and aplatepivot ally applied to the last -n'ientioned face of" (lopies ofrithis patentmam be obtained foffive cents -each by addressing-the Commissioner Garments;
said nut to conoealsa-id member and forum ing a face on the nutof equal size to the otherfaees of said nut.
The combination with a bolt having a longitudinalslottherein; of a nut having a transverse opening therein terminating at its outer end in one face of the nut, said ast mentioned face varying in size from the other faces of said nut, a member inserted through said opening toengage said slot and secure the nut on the bolt, a plate forming' a complete face-for th'enu'tpivotally applied-to the last mentioned faceof said nut to coneeal the: membertherein; the face formed by sue-h plate A being equal in size to the other faces of the nut and means to limit the pivotaPm'ovement of the-plate on the nut.
In testimony whereof I alli mysignature 1n p'reseneeof two Witnesses:
