CONCRETE STRUCTURE.
, Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. Q, 1915,,
Application filed April 3,1915. Seria1No.18,932.
To all whom it may concern: I I
Be it known that 1, JOHN J. MORAN, a citizen of the United States, residing :at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Concrete Structures, of which the following is. a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in concrete structures and has rela-- tion more particularly to a building stud or floor joist; and it is an object of my invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character including a metallic reinforce and of v such construction in cross section as to afford a maximum of strength and which, when in applied pos1- tion, results in the formation of the requisite air cells. l
lhe invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved concrete structure whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise-more convenient and ad vantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the-appended claim.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein 8, the uppermost flanges 3 being of a width in excess of the lower flanges 2 and the outer or free longitudinal edges of said flanges 2 and 3 aredisposed on bevels radiating from a common center positioned at a point below the stud'or joist so that when in applied position, adjacent joists or studs will snugly engage one with the other whereby the strain imposed thereupon will be evenly distributed and whereby 'the air cells, for a purpose which is believed to be self-evident, are afforded. It is also to be observed that the beveled edges of the flanges at the same side of the web 1 are positioned in the same radiating plane. The web 1 and flanges 2 and 3 are adapted to be produced of concrete and in order to impart additional strength thereto, I find it of advantage to dispose through said girder or joist adjacent the opposite longitudinal margins of the web and within the transverse planes of the flanges, the metallic rods 4, and to embed within the outer extremities of the flanges 2 and 3 and arranged longitudinally thereof the additional rods 5, said rods being of a gage less than the rods 4: or as the necessities of practice may require. It is also to be noted that the rods 4 are connected by the reinforcing members 7 disposed transverselv of the web of the joist and that the rods 4 and 5 are connected by the reinforcing mem- .bers 8. By this arrangement, it will be perceived that the stud or joist possesses a .to which my invention appertains.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a concrete structure constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenienceand facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and-formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
I claim:
A concrete joist comprising a web and reversely directed flanges carried by the longitudinal marginal portions of said web, the flanges along one marginal portion being of a length less than the remainder of the flanges, the free longitudinal edges of said flanges being beveled on lines radiating from a common center removed from the transverse center of the face of the girder from which the shorter flanges extend, reinforcing bars embedded within the opposite forcing members connecting the first named longitudinal margins of the web and within bars and the second named bars. 10 the transverse planes of the flanges, addi- In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my tional reinforce bars embedded within the signature in the presence of two witnesses. flanges adjacent the outer extremities and JOHN J. MORAN. disposed longitudinally thereof, reinforc- Witnesses:
ing members disposed through the web and ANNA MURRAY,
connecting the first named bars, and rein- MARY MURPHY.
