Be it known that I, PETER LANDINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milford, New Haven county, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vind- Shield Hinge- Joints, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to hinge joints for wind shields and aims to provide a simple and eiiicient device of this character embodying new and improved features of construction.
The invention is described iii detail in the following specification taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part thereof, and in which* Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in front elevation of a wind shield hinge joint constructed in accordance with the present invention. The lower end of this pin extends the body of the movable section as at 13, this oifset portion seating in the step bearing 6 of the socket portion, which bearing centers the pin or stud therein.

The movable and removable section 11 vof the socket member is applied Vto the fixed section by inserting the hinge pin or stud 12 into the journal bearing 5 and moving the same laterally of the fixed section and axially ofthe socket to seat the ofset 13 in the step bearing 6. When this movable section is swung toward the fixed section, the walls 10-14 and S-1G will abut, the two sections forming a substantially semi-circular socket orH opening. YThe wall of the fixed section above and adjacent the socket portion 5 is cut away as at 18 to permit the movable section 11 to be swung outwardly so as to open the socket to receive the hub portion of the hinge joint, This hub portion carries a movable wind shield section and comprises a cylindrical hub portion 19 having an annular groeve 2O therein intermediate its the pin or stud, thisV member combeyond and is offset from 3 ends. At its outer extremity the hub 19 is formed' with a concentric bearing iiange 21 formed integral with the hub and having attached thereto and preferably integral therewith, a corner portion 22 of the frame of the wind shield section. The hub portion 19 is of a diameter equal to the diameter of a socket formed by the fixed semi-circular wall 3 of the socket. The movable section 11 of the socket has its semi-circular portion 15 formed on an arc slightly less than the arc of the portion 3 and of the hub, so that when the hub is inserted within the socket portion and the movable portion 11 of the socket closed, there will be a frictional grip on the hub portion 19. In order to hold the hub portion 19 .in adjusted position within the socket member, a thumb screw 23 is provided, which thumb screw is inserted through the bore 17 in the movable section l1 and takes into the threaded bore 9 of the fixed socket section. lVith the hub portion inserted and the movable socket section closed, the thumb screw may be turned up to force themovable section against the hub to hold the latter firmly in adjusted position within the socket. The bearing flange 21 of the hub vmember, in this position of the parts, will rest against the outer faces of the semi-circular socket sections 3 and 15 and will have a bearing thereon, taking part of the supporting load of the wind shield from the hub portion 19 in the event of any looseness from wear or sagging, as well as covering the socket opening from view. The hub is centered in its socket by means of a key or pin 24: extending radially inward from the semi-circular wall 3 and taking in the annular groove 20 of the hub. It` will be evident that the hub with its wind shield section may be removed bodily lby loosening the clamping screw 23 and swinging the movable socket section outwardly.. 5
It will be seen that the hinge jo'intdescribed presents a neat and attractiverappearance and unbroken lines toward the outside and with but'a minimum portion'gof the hinging parts exposed. By having a removable portion for the socket member', the wind shield section may be applied at any time, minimizing the danger of shield breakage during manufacture or repairjlof the car to which it is applied.

2. A hinge joint embodying a socket member and a hub member arranged to. be adjustably supported thereby, said socket member comprising a standard having an enlarged portion recessed to provide. 'a solid base with an integral substantially semicircular wall and with an adjacent hinge socket therein and with a complemental substantially semi-circular swinging wall portion j ournaled in said hinge socket and seated over said base, the said hub member having, a hub portion arranged to seat between said walls and having a iange arranged to bear upon the outer edges thereof, with means for holding said walls in clamping engagement with said hub. 3. A hinge oint embodying a socket member and a hub member arranged to be adjustably supported thereby, said socket member comprising a solid base with an integral substantially semi-circular wall and with an adjacent hinge socket therein and ,with a complemental substantially semi-circular swinging wall portion journaled in said hinge socket and seated over said base, the said hub member having a hub portion arranged to Vseat'between said walls and 'provided ,with-an `annular groove therein and also h'avingfaflan'ge arranged to bear upon the outer edges' thereof, with means for holding said walls in clamping engagement with said hub, one of said walls having a member arranged to project into said hub groove to lprevent bodily removal thereof axially from the socket.
4. A hinge joint embodying a socket member and a hub member arranged to be adjustably supported thereby, said socket member comprising a standard having an enlarged portion recessed to provide a solid base, with an integral substantially semicircular wall and with an adjacent hinge socket therein and with a complemental substantially semi-circular swinging wallportion journaled in" said hinge socket, and seated over said base, the said hub member having a hub portion arranged to seat between said walls and provided with an annular groove therein and also having a flange arranged to bear upon the outer edges thereof, with means for holding said walls in fractional clamping engagement with said hiib,one of said walls having a member arranged to project into said hub"groove todo. prevent bodily removal thereof axially from i the socket. f
