Gears for Engines, of which the following-is a specification, reference being hadtherein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates toimprovements in valve gears for engines especially to that form of gear known as the link motion for steam engines, wherein the cut-ofi maybe varied and the engine reversed'thereby.
Another object of the presentimprovement is to devise a valve gear constructed in such a manner that the link may be operated by one eccentric instead of by the use of two as has heretofore been necessary.
Other objects and advantages of the present improvement willbe set forth in the following description and drawing in which the figure is a diagrammatic view showing" a front elevation of my .improved gear.
The application and advantages of a link motion valve gear to a reciprocating engine is well established and understood in the art, and the invention herein resides only in the novel combination of parts hereinafter disclosed. Referring now to the drawing in detail in which like reference numerals designate similar parts, 1 represents the crank shaft of an engine, and 2 the slide valve within the steam-chest of the said enginewhich valve governs the supply of steam to the engine in the usual and well known manner.
3 represents the usual form of eccentric fixed to the shaft 1 in the usual manner and surrounded by an eccentric strap comprising the halves 4 and 5. Upon the uppermost half 4 of the strap an eccentric rod 6 is rigidly fixed which extends upwardly and is pivotally connected at 7 to a link'8. The
link 8 is of the common form and manually controlled in the usual manner, its connec tion to the valve 2 being the stem 2.
The half 4 of the eccentric strap is provided with an ear 9 forming a pivotal point which ear is positioned on the strap atsubstantially thirty-seven degrees from the center line of the rod 6. A rod 10 has one end pivotally connected to the 'ear' 9 and its other end connected to one arm 11 of a bell crank, said bell crank being pivotally mounted upon a fixed bearing 13. The connection of the half 4 of the eccentrio strap at the point 9 through the medium ofthe rod 10, bell crank 1112 and rod 14, imparts motion to one end of the link'8 whereby the same results, are accomplished as with the ordinarytwo eccentric link motion valve gear used only with one ec- 7 centric. r 4
lt is fevident that the arrangement of rods operating the different ends of the link may be transposed to suit convenience in the construction of the engine.
, Having-thus fully described my invention What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
I 1. A link-motion valve gear for engines,

comprisingan eccentric fixed upon the crank shaft of the engine, a strap surrounding the said eccentric, a rigid connection between the strap and one end of the link, a movable connection between the eccentric and the other end of the link, a connection between the link and the valve gear of the engine, whereby the link is reciprocated and the valve of the engine controlled by the revolutions of the crank shaft.
3. A link-motion'valve gear for engines, comprisin crankshaft of the engine, a strap surrounding the said eccentric, a link, a connection between the link and the valve of the enanceccentric mounted upon the i rocated and the valve controlled by the revo-' lutions of the crank shaft.
e. A link-motion'valve gear for engines, comprising an eccentric fixed upon the crank shaft of the engine, a strap surrounding the said eccentric, a link, a connection between the link and the valve of the engine, a rod rigidly fastened to theupper face of the eccentric and having its other end pivotally connected to one end of the link, a lever having one end pivotally connected to the upper face of the strap, a second lever hav-v ing one end pivotally connected to the op posite end of the link to that at which the rigid rod is pivoted, and means connected to the free ends of the said levers whereby the movement of one lever in one direction causes the other lever to move in the oppo-fl site direction, the link being reciprocated and the valve of the engine controlled by the revolutions of the crank shaft.
5. A link-motion valve gear for engines comprising an eccentric fixed to the crank shaft of the engine, a strap surrounding the said eccentric, a link, a connection between the link and the valve of the engine, a rod having one end rigidly connected to the strap and its other end pivotally connected 0 to one end of the link, an ear pivotally mounted upon the strap, said ear arranged thirty seven degrees from the center line of the said rod, a lever having one end pivotally connected to the said ear, a second lever having one end pivotally connected to thelink at the opposite end to that to which the end of the rod is pivoted, a bell crank pivotally carried by the framework of the engine, and having its arms pivotally connectedfto the free ends ofthe said levers whereby the movement of the eccentric causes the rod to impart a motion in one direction to the link, and the levers through the. medium of the bell crank to impart the opposite motion .to the, link, the parts arranged as and for the purpose described.
