UNITED ,STATES PATENT oEEroE. Y'
SAMUEL G. GOSS, OF GLENCOE, ILLINOIS, AND RALPH C. SEYMOUR, OF LARCHMONT/ NEW YORK.
MACHINE FOR OPERATING UPON WEBS.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, SAMUEL G. Goss and RALPH C. SEYMOURU, citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at Glencoe, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and at Larehmont, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have jointlyinvented new and useful Improvements in Machines for Operating upon Webs, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to machines for operating upon a web of paper or like material, and more especially to machines for cutting and also, if desired, for collecting, a web, such as a printed web, run from a printing press or like machine. l
The objects of the invention are in part set forth hereinafter, and in part will be obvious herefrom, and are attained or effectuated by the means and instrumentalities pointed out in the accompanying claims.
The invention consists in the novel parts,
arrangements, improvements and combina' tions hereln shown and described.
The accompanying drawings, referred to herein and forming apart hereof, illustrate one embodiment of the invention, the same serving in connection with the description scale, of one memberfof the compensating device; Fig. 4 is a view similarto-Fig. 3' of the other or coperating compensating de-l vice; Fig. 5 is a detail elevation, on a differentI enlarged scale, of one of the cutters or shearing blades; and Fig. 6 is a partly diagrammatic'view illustrating the taking up of the web in order to make the cut form, the cutting means'comprlses a pair of rotary devices 15 and 16. The; device 15 has straight acrossthe web.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, illustrating by way of example one embodiment of the invention, a web is supplied from .a suitable source, such as a printing press or like machine. Any suitable form of web forwarding devices may be provided,
and as embodied herein, such devices comprise a series of tapes 1 coperating with one surface of the web and a corresponding l Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2, 1915.
Applicationalea November 25, 1913. serial No. 802,989.
series of tapes 2 (shown fragmentarily in the drawings) acting upon the opposite face of the web. The tapes 1 pass over a series of rollers 3, carried'upon-a shaft 4, and also over a series of rollers 5, carried upon a shaft 6. The series of tapes 1 likewise pass over a series of tension rollers 7. Rollers? are mounted in a suitable manner, as upon arms 8, carried upon a shaft or other support 9, and placed under tension in a suitable manner, as by springs or otherwise. The 'tapes 2 are shown passing over a correspond- 'ing series of rollers 10, carried upon a suit- -vention said devices are constructed and arranged to cut the web transversely but in a slightly diagonal direction referred to the run of the web, thereby securing a shearing action and a clean out of the web while it is on the run; the invention providing in connection with the foregoing means and in coperation therewith compensating devices which cause the actual cut to be made straight across the web, instead of diagonally. In accordance with certain features .of the invention, such compensating means or device acts to take u'p the web at one side and gradually across in a diminishing ldegree so as to just compensate for the diagonal set of the cutting or shearing blades. Thus the speed ofthe web is maintained, a clean, certain and rapid'cut is eected, and the edges of the sheet are kept true, or perpendicular to the 'sides and the necessity of a further trimming of such cut edges is obviated, as would otherwise benecessary in securing a rst class product.
Referring in more detail to the embodied Aairway or met a shaft 17 upon which are mounted a series,
4of disks 18 rotating therewith and fixed with disks 24 carried upon a shaft 25. Said disks areconnected by the web or bar 26, which carry the blade 27. The blades 21 and 27 are arranged slightly diagonally to the axes of Yrotation of the disks on which they are carried', as will be best seen from Fig. 5 of the drawing, said blades thus makingb' al clean and positive cut in the running we Referrin now more' particularly to the embodied form of compensating device, a roller or like member 30 is provided on one side of the web, said roller being carried by a suitable shaft 31. In said roller 30 is formed a groove or recess 32 extending lonlgitudinally of` the roller, and preferably from one end to the other thereof. Said groove 32 is of greatest depth or extent, considered transversely of the roller 30, at one end of said roller and diminishing to nothing at the other end thereof. On the opposite side of the web a@ isa coperating roller or cylinder 33 carried upon a shaft 34. The
roller 33 is provided with a projection 35 arranged longitudinally thereof'and shaped, proportioned and positioned to enter into the recess 32 periodically `as the rollers 30 and 33 rotate. The groove 32 and projection 35 are also proportioned so as 'to lift or hold back the web just sufficiently to compensate vfor the diagonal set of the shearing blades 2 1 and 27, thus causing the gradual shearingl out which is made .as the web runs through the cutting device to actually be a cutwhich is true or straightacross the web and perpendicular to the sides thereof. It
will be understood that there is thus real-- ized the combinedadvantages of running the webrapidly through the machine, effect-l ing the shearing or clean cut of the running web, and at the Vsame time getting true edges on the product without resorting to an additional trimming.
In Fig. 6 of the drawings, which is of a diagrammatic nature, the two views may be regarded as looking at the parts from one end and then from the other. gether these views illustrate how the web is taken up at one side and in gradually decreasing degree across the web to nothing at the other side, as already explained.
Means are provided for directing the 'sheet forward from the cutting devices, and
in the drawings a Vseries o f throat bars 40 are shown mounted upon a suitable rod' 41 and a corresponding series of throat bars 42 mounted upon,a rod 43, thesheets being guided 'downwardly through the thr0at or passageway formed between the opposed set Vof bars -40 and 42.
Receiving the forwarded sheets is acollecting cylinder 44, mounted upon a shaft Taken tofromthe collecting cylinder 44 are provided Such as a series of tapes 49 working over a Series of rollers 50, and a series of coperating'tapes 51 working over a series of rollersQ 52. A suitable stripper 53 may also be provided. 4
It will be understood that .the illustrated embodiment lrealizes the vobjects of invention and advantages specified, together with other objects and advantages. It will be further understood that variations and departures may be made from the illustrated machine without departing from the principles of the invention and without sacrific-` ingits chief objects and advantages.
