The object of the present invention is to provide the separately cast sections with interlcckingends whichare drawn into rigid engagement by the contraction of the sections as they cool, whereby the usual reinforcing member of expanded metal orwi're.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the description proceeds, wherein it is to be understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention can beniade within the scope of what-1s claimed without departing from the spiritthereof.
The preferred embodiment of our invention is disclosed in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a plan view of the wearing face of a brake shoe embodying the characteristic features of our invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the back thereof; Fig. 3 is a view in longitudinal section of the foregoing; Fig. 4 is a View in cross section taken on the line 44 of Fig. 2.
Referring specifically to the several views, the brake shoe which is therein disclosed is formed with a steel reinforcing back 6 of the usual and preferred form, and includes the integral attaching lug 7, whereby the shoe may be secured to the brake head.

The central section 12 which is formed of soft metal is cast between the confronting ends of the hard metal sections, and the shrinkage or contraction thereof causes a slight separation between the end wallslt of the projections andthe bottom walls l6 of the dovetailed recesses 10. A slight separation also occurs between the ,-meetingends.- ,of the hard and soft sections as at 17 so that the various sections may expand slightly in an independent manner, preventing the shoe from straightening out as itbecomes heated in service. The slight separations between the various sections also materiallyincreases the heat-radiating surface for ithesections, affording ample opportunity for the dissipation of frictional heat.
- The shrinkage or contraction of the vari ous sections results in the oblique walls 18 of the end projections being drawn into forced'a'nd wedged contact with the correspending and oblique walls 11 of the dovetalled recesses 10. In this manner, a secure anchorageis had between the various sections, and the metal of the central sections, which flows up through the openings 13 in the reinforcing back, in connection with the end stops 9, practically eliminates all danger or likelihood of a section, or portion 7 thereof, becoming detached or separated from theshoe.
What we claim is 1. A. brake shoe comprising a common y, supporting member, hard metal sections anchored/thereto and provided with recesses therein, and a soft metal section anchored to said common supporting member and provided with projections extending Within and interlocking with said recesses.
2. A brake shoe comprising a reinforcing back, separated hard and soft metal sections anchored thereto provided with interlocking ends.
3. A brake shoe comprising a reinforcing back, hard metal sections anchored thereto and provided with confronting and Widening recesses therein, and a soft metal section anchored to saidback and separated from said hard metal sections, said soft metal sections provided with projections fitting within and interlocking with said recesses.

6. A brake shoe comprising a common supporting member, separated metal sec tions anchored thereto and provided with interlocking ends.
7. Abrake shoe comprising a reinforcing back, separated sections of metal anchored thereto and provided with interlocking ends.

A brake shoe comprising a reinforcing back, sections anchored thereto and provided With confronting and widening recesses therein, and a central section anchored to said back and separated from said end sections, said central sections provided with projections fitting. within, and interlocking with, said end section recesses.
