I'MPRQVEMENT IN ROLLERS AND MARKERS FOR PLANTING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,900, dated June 13, 1871.
To all to whom it may concern Be it known that we, FREDERICK ROTH and BERNHARD FRS'I, of Lacon, in the county of Marshall and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Roller and Marker; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the specification.
Our invention relates to improvement in and consists in a frame which is so constructed that the rear ends of its side bars act as shoes or runners to support the machine when the marking device is elevated from the ground. Thus, there is nonecessity of providing wheels or other means of support beside the main frame of the machine, as in the ease of other combined markers and rollers which have a jointed tongue and a jointed ton gue we esteem a valuable adjunct in our machine, for, otherwise, upon ground full. of inequalities, the markers would be at times pressed deeply into the earth and at others lifted completely out of it, thus frustrating in a measure the useful purpose of the machine.
The drawing is a perspective view of our A. indicates the frame, and B B B the rollers of our improved machine. The side bars rear ends are lnsh with the rear side of the marking-frame, and thus form fenders or protectors for said frame. They are also beveled i on their under sides, at their rear ends, so as to act as supports for the markerframe when the same is held in an elevated position by devices hereinafter described, to which we attach, at the rear, the marker-frame G, having two or more marking-plows, D, by jointing the tongue E thereof to the vertical bolt F, so as to have vertical oscillation; and we arrange the bolt sc as to oscillate horizontally, thereby providing for the universal motion of the said connection required. We also connect this marker to the roller-frame by the bail G, lever H, stand I, and catch-bar K, for regulating the depth ot the marking and holding the markers above the ground when not required to Work. The notches of the said catch-bar are turned each way from the center 0I' the notched v part, those above being for holding the lever up, and those below for holding it down. The lever being placed in any of the upper notches will hold the ploWs in the ground, and when placed in any of the lower ones will hold them out.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The frame A, provided with a jointed tongue, and having side bars extended rearward, and beveled to form shoes or supports for marking device, when the same is elevated, as set forth.
