- the ties in question are-usually formed from short lengths of wire, being cut from a reel and shaped or ended lup in some predetermined manner. These ties are relatively small and must be handled with a good deal of speed, and if they have little sharp projections or roughened surfaces or points or edges, the hand of the operator is certain to be injured.

the' following is a specification.
My ,invention relates to metal ties for various purposes and its principal object is to obliterate or minimize the eilects of the irregularities and projections commonly incident to the manufacture of such ties and vto particularly prevent the rusting and deterioration of ,theends of such ties and also to prevent their injury to the person ofthe user or the object with which they come in contact, and to minimize the amount of metal required to make the tie and to cause the tie when finally used to remain twisted,
and to adhere to the object with which it is used.
The ties in question are-usually formed from short lengths of wire, being cut from a reel and shaped or ended lup in some predetermined manner. These ties are relatively small and must be handled with a good deal of speed, and if they have little sharp projections or roughened surfaces or points or edges, the hand of the operator is certain to be injured.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure lis a side elevation of a tie with 11p-set ends; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a tie with the endsand portions of the tie adjacent thereto coated; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of^a tie, the ends of which are formed by minute loops ;l Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the same with the loops and the entire body of the tie coated; Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a-tie having an enlarged loop at its ends; Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the same with one loop enlargement and a portion of the Atie adjacent thereto coated, and the enlarge- Y.

I have endeavored in this manner to show modifications and variations. The adhesive material which as hereinafter explainedmay be of any desired substanceas solder or glue but which is preferably madeof a glue-like substance, can be used to inclose the ends or the roughened portions of the tie orto inclose the'end and aportionv of the tie near such end, that is the portidnwhich is to form.

I do not therefore wish to be limited to the particular size, form, proportions and relations ofthe ends or the coatings used or the materials of which the coatings are made, and it might be foundv desirable to use one material for the roughened portion and one for the body of the tie or the loop, and it might be found desirable touse one kind of material at one end of the tie and another kind at the other end to get a better adhesive or locking effect when the two ends are twisted together.
The ties are required to have some kind vof an enlarged end so that they can be held the interstices and ultimately partiallyv hardens so as to leave a smooth, somewhat globular body about and inclosing the roughened or enlarged portions. Various kinds of glue or glue-like materials can be employed, preferably having for their base either tar, pitch or asphaltum substances. Boadly speaking, the preferred idea is to use a substance Which Will flow about the enlargement, lill the interstices, form a more or less globular protection about and inclosing the enlarged end or enlargement on the end as the case may be, set or harden suiiciently to prevent its being easily' broken or separated from the tie, protect the fingers of the user or the materials with` which it comes in contact and tend to adhere to such material so as to keep the tie in place. This coating may also be of solder but in this event there is more than the necessary trouble and expense because the wire must be acid cleaned. A glue-like substance which dries readily is preferable, and into a mass of the same the part to be treated is immersed. The irregularities or projections on the part to be treated tend to cause such liquid to gather in a more or less globular mass about such part and there to remain, filling the interstices and forming a relatively smooth or globular exterior. If, as I prefer, such adhesive material is carried back along the surface of the tie for a considerable distance from one or both'of the enlarged ends it will tend when these two parts are twisted together to tighten the tie about the object to prevent 'them from untwisting and requires less wire because less wire twists are necessary. rI`he result, when a tie so made with adhesive material 1s finished and tightened in position,
is to give a twisted tightened end which is protected by such adhesive material'against rust and deterioration, and is rendered ncapable of injuring the person of the operator or the material With which it comes in contact and which tends to adhere to such material so as to hold the tie in place.
