To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WINN E. BnooerrroN,
a citizen ofthe' United States, residing in moved into an inoperative position when.
' the. fleshing cylinder may be removed and. replaced with an unhairing cylinder. These Peabody, in'the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Apparatus for Treating Hides and Skins, of which the followingdescription, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like. characters on the drawings representing like parts. 7 This invention relates to apparatus for treating hides and skins,'andhas for its object to provide a simple and efficient machine which is capable of being used for performing the operation of fieshing or unhairing or both. 'To this end, the machine is provided with a bed roll and with a bladed cylinder cooperating therewith; and
is further provided with feed rollsrwhi ch' are located above or at a higher level than said bed roll, with onelof said feed rolls located in substantially the'same plane as the bed roll and separated therefrom by a substantial space, so that the portion of the hide or skin between the bed roll and feed rolls may serve as a"yielding bed for an unhairing tool, which is capable of being the hide or skin is being fleshed, and of being moved into an operative position between the bed roll and feed roll to engage the portion of the hide or skin between said rolls, when the hide or skin is'to be unhaired. By providing the bladed cylinder With sharp blades, the machine is capable of being used for both fleshing and unhairing, as in this case, the machine can be used for fieshing untll the blades have become too dull for this purpose, whereupon the machine can be used for unhairing, or the blades may be resharpened and used for fieshing, and when all of the hides or skins of a given batch or lot have been fleshed,
and other features of this invention will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this or construction of machine embodying this invention. Fig. 2, aside elevation of a portion of the machineshown in Fig. 1". Fig.
3, a detail in section to illustrate theunhairpose said carriage is elevated or ing operation of the machine, modification to be referred to.
The machine herein shown is in the main substantially the same as that shown and described in U. S. Patent N 0. 696,588 dated Apr. 1, 1902, and is provided with a cylinder a having helically'arranged blades 6 to act on the hideor skin 0 supported by a bed roll 10, preferably a pneumatic roll, which and Fig. 4, a
' is mounted in a movable carriage 12 and is supplied with air pressure from a reservoir 11, substantially as shown and described in U. S. Patent 85 1,6119 dated May 21, 1907.
The'carriage 12 is moved toward and from the bladed cylinder at by power substantially as shown and described in U. S. Patent No. 696,588above referred to, and asthis portion of the machine constitutes no part of the present invention it is not deemed necessary to describe the same in detail, except to point out that 13 is the main or driving shaft and 14: the counter shaft with which the carriage 12 is operatively connected, so as to be moved toward the bladed cylinder by a half revolution of the shaft 14 and to be moved back away from the bladed cylinder-by the next half revolution of the said shaft, after the manner described in the Patent No. 696,588 above referred to. The machine is also provided with rolls 2', 9, t, corresponding to the bed roll 2', pinch roll 9 and feed roll 25 of the Patent No. 696,588, which series of rolls in the present machine are supported by the carriage 12 above the level of the bed roll 10 and bladed cylinder at, for which purbuilt up, as herein represented. The pinch'roll 9 operates in the same manner as described in the PatentNo. 696,588 and is raised and lowered in curved guide ways 15, by links or arms 16, which are operatively connected with the counter shaft 14. The pinch roll 9 acts to grip the hide or skin 0 between it and the rolls i, If, and said rolls are positively driven after the manner described in the Patent No.696,588 so as to feed the hide or skin out of the machine.
The roll 75 is located above the pneumatic bedroll 10 a suitable distance, so that the portion of the hide or skin 0 between said rolls is not rigidly or firmly backed up but is yielding, so as to enable it to be unhaired by an unhairing tool, which may be of any construction suitable for this purpose and WllIClI'lS herein shown as arbar provided with blades 21 suitable for unhairing. The
The hangers 22 are provided with inclined arms 30, which extend upwardly from the pivot rod 23 and have attached to them rods 31, which are extended through stationary arms 32 keyed or otherwise secured to the pivot rod 23; The unhairingtool or bladed bar 20 is yieldingly backed up by springs 34:, which encircle the rods 31 between the arms 32 and nuts 35 on the said'rods, and
sure.
the tension or strength of said springs may be adjusted by means of said nuts, so as to 7 cause the unhairing tool to engage the hide or skin with .the desired'or required pres The unhairing tool 20 is arranged above the bed roll 10 and bladed'cylinder a, and engages the hide or skin between the bed roll 10 and the roll i, and the tension on the portion of thehide or skin a between the roll i and the bed roll 10 is su'liicient to enable the hide or skin to be effectively unhaired.
In operation wlth the apparatus herein shown, the carriage 12 is moved by power back away from the cylinder at and the pinch is then set in motion by depressing a treadle,
(not shown) but in the manner described in the Patent No. 696588 above; referred to, with the result that the carriage 12 is moved toward the bladed cylinder and into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and the pinch roll 9 is lowered into the position shown, so
- as to grip the hide or skin between it and I -on' its passage out of the machine has :its.-
' the manner now commonly practised with the feed rolls i, t, which are provided with suitable gears (not shown) for feeding the,
hide or skin out of the machine, while; the carriage is at restln its operative posltion shown in Figs. '1 and 3. 'The hide or skin flesh side acted upon by the bladed cylinder a, and the lumps of fatremoved therefrom in fleshing machines. After one half of the hide or skin has been fleshed, the carriage is moved back by power, and the otherhalf of.
the hide or skin is placed in the machineso as to be fleshed by the cylinder at. During the fleshing operation, the hide or skin is supported by a substantially firm backing,
namely the bed roll 10, which kind of a sup-.
The operator places the hide or skin port is essential for successful fleshing. 'While the hide or skin is being fleshed as describedgthe unhairing toolmay andpre rerably will :be held-back in any'suitable manner, so as to renderit inactive upon; the
flesh side of the hide or skin. The machine may be used for' fieshing as long as the blades of the cylinder remain sufliciently sharp to perform this work in a satisfactory manner, at which time the blades may be resharpened or ground by a suitable grinder 50, and the fleshing operation'continued until the number of hides or skins desired have. V I
been fleshed, whereupon thesam e machine may then be used to .unhair'the hides or skins previously fieshedby the machine.
In the unhairing operation, the hide or skin is placed in the machine with the gra n,
side having the hair thereon presented to the bladed cylinder '06, and also. to'the uns i001 which has inthe meantime been brought into its operative position.
When the hide orskinis fed out-of the ma. chine, the bladed cylinder a acts on, the;
haired side of the hide orskin andhas a double function, namely, it cooperates with the'bed roll and with the feed rolls i, 9 t,
to place the portion of the hide 0r skinlbe tween. the feedroll z and the bed roll 10 under tension, and second it actsto start or loosen the hair, and in some cases it may re- 7 move portlons of the hair. The halr whlch is started or loosened by thebladed cylinder a is removedbythe unhairingtool 20, as the hide or skin is fed past the said tool. After" one half of the hide or skin hasbeen um haired,the other part or half is placed in the machine so as to be subjected tothe action of the bladed cylinder a andthe unlhairing tool 20'. It will be understood that. the blades of the cylinder are-dulled'suf ficiently to prevent them' from digging into and cutting the grain sideof the. hide. or skin, but on the other hand, the said blades. act as scrapers or pulling devices to scrape or pull upon the hair and loosen the same and in some instances pull the long hairs.
out of the skin, and thus remove portions of the hair from some parts of the hide or skin, and the hair started or loosened by the a bladed cylinder at is removed by the unhair;
ing tool, which acts upon the hide orskin whilethe latter is capable of yielding awcerv tain amount to the pressure of the unhairing tool. The unhairing tool 20 is located in proximity to the bladed cylinder, .so that.
only a small portion of the end of the hide or skin is not unhaired by the tool 20 and this'portion may be unhaired by hand. It will be understood, that so far as the move ments of thecarriage for the bedrolhpinch.
and feed rolls areconcerned, they are timed 1 and governed substantially as described in the Patent'No. 696588 above referredto; 7 From the above descrlption it will be seen,
vtion to the particular form or construction shown. Further it is not desired to limit the invention to the particular form of fleshing and unhairing tools herein shown.
It may be preferred to utilize the skin itself as a yielding backing for the unhairing tool, but it is not desired to limitthe invention in this respect as the bed roll 10 and feed roll 2' may be connected by an endless band 40, see Fig. 4, which serves as a yielding backing for the hide or skin while it is being acted upon by the unhairing tool.
.The machine herein shown constitutes what may be considered a combination fleshing and unhairing machine, which is especially serviceable for tanners doing a limited business or for tanners doing a large business with a limited floor area, as in both instances a single machine may be used for either or both kinds of work, but it is also advantageous for doing either straight fleshing or straight unhairing as in this case the tanner is only, required to carry an extra bladed cylinder, either fleshing or unhairing, which can be readily substituted in the 7 machine for the bladed cylinder on the machine when the latter ispurchased. lVhen the machine is used for fieshing,the hide or skin is firmly supported by the bed roll, which is desirable for the best work, and when used for unhairing, it is provided with a yielding surface for the unhairing tool to act against, which is desirable for this work.
