UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELMER A. CLARK, OF JULIET, ILLINOIS.
MIXING-MACHINE.
Application filed September 24, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELMER A. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Joliet, county of Will, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mixing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates in general to mixing machines and in particular to mixing machines operated by power to mix dough or other materials of varying consistencies. Although the mechanism disclosed particularly is adapted for the uses above set forth, it is applicable equally to all types of machines where it is desired to obtain the advantageous results which flow from its structural advantages.
In mixing machines of the type chosen to illustrate my invention, numerous expedients have been tried to facilitate the changing of the beater and to render the mixture bowl readily accessible and easily removable. These expedients have failed to meet the required condition, owing either to their slow method of operation, to their inaccessible fixed position at the front of the machine, or in many instances to both these defects. My new improvements comprise a device which has been found in practice to work rapidly, accurately, and positively, and which permits the bowl to be swung freely in any direction to that point where it is most readily accessible. The particular combination which I have chosen to illustrate my improvements is disclosed in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective of a portion of a mixing machine, showing the ring yoke or bowl support in intermediate position; and Fi 2 is an elevation of a modification of a detail.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.

vertical movement of the ring yoke may be limited, if desired, by collars 5.
Vertical movement of the ring yoke may be obtained by any well known mechanical movement, an efficient mode consisting of a raising or cross bar 7, connecting rod 8, crank pin 9, crank 10, shaft 11, and handle 12, all connected in well known manner to raise and lower the raising bar 7 by throwing the handle. The parts are so proportioned and adjusted that when the raising bar 7 is in raised position, the crank pin 9, will have crossed the dead center of the parts and the crank 10 will rest against a suitable stop as the inner side of the column, thereby preventing the raising bar 7 from returning to lowered position irrespective of the weight it carries unless first the handle 12 be thrown sufficiently to move the crank 10 away from the wall of column 1 and crank pin 9 beyond dead center. The raising pin 7 in the present illustrative combination, preferably may consist of two or more extensions arranged beneath the ring yoke 2 and its cap 3, and extending through slots provided for that purpose in the column 1, one of which slots is indicated by reference character 6. It will be noted that the slot 6 extends sufficiently below the lower ring 5 to allow the ring yoke 2 and its cap 3 to rest directly on the lower collar 5 in order to furnish a broad bearing surface on which they may swing. This latter feature is unnecessary if any equivalent structure be adopted to contact with and raise the ring yoke 2 and its cap 3, such as a circular piece connected with the connecting rod 8 in place of or in conjunction with the raising pin or pins 7.
To prevent swinging of the ring yoke 2 when in operative position a suitable locking device is provided which may consist of a tapered recess 141 in the ring yoke 2, adapted to receive a corresponding tapered pin 15 on the column 1. Fig. 2 indicates a modification in which the tapered pin 15 is replaced by a roller 16 and the tapered recess 1a is replaced by a cam groove 17.
The operation of the device is obvious. When in raised, operative position, at which time the beating of the mixture takes place in well known manner, the ring yoke 2, and its cap 3 support the bowl firmly and positively in predetermined position. When it is desired to change the beater, to remove the bowl from the ring yoke 2, or to render the bowl accessible, the handle 12 is thrown over, thereby lowering the ring yoke 2, in
which position it may be swung in a horizontal plane to any point desired. No adjustment is necessary, the operation of the 'mechanism from dust or from splashings from the mixture bowl.
Many modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art, my invention not being limited to the particular means chosen to illustrate it, but consisting broadly of means to raise and lower themixture bowl and at the same time permit it to be moved readily to an accessible position.
Having thus disclosed one embodimentoli my invention what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. In a mixing machine, a bowl support member, a member for revolubly supporting said bowl support member, means to raise and lower said bowl support member, and means to prevent said bowl support member from revolving when in raised position comprising a projection on one of said members adapted to enter a recess provided on the other of said members when said bowl support member is in raised position.
2. In a mixing machine, a bowl support member, a member for revolubly-supporting said bowl support member, means to raise and lower such bowl support member, and means to prevent said bowl support member from revolving when in raised position comprising a roller on one of-said members adapted to engage with a cam sured to revolve thereon, and means to raise andlower said bowl support comprising a 7 bar extending through said slot.
l. In a mixing machine, a bowl support, means for revolubly supporting said bowl support, means to raise and lower said bowl support comprising a crank adapted to be supported beyond dead center when the bowl support is in raised position, and means so to support said crank.
5. In a mixing machine, a bowl support, and means for raising and lowering said bowl support comprising means to engage with said bowl support, a connecting rod engaging said last-named means, a crank connected with said connecting rod, and a handle connected with said crank.
6. In a mixing machine, a bowl support, a hollow column having a cylindrical bearing surface provided with a collar on which said bowl support is adapted to rest and rotate and with a slot extending below said collar, and a bar extending through said slot and adapted to raise said support, and means to raise and lower said bar.
7. In a mixing machine, a bowl support, means for revolubly supporting said bowl support, and means to raise and lower said bowl support adapted to be entirely disconnected from said bowl support when the latter is in lowered position.
