ELECTRIC FURNACE.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.24.1914.
Patented 001. 26,1915.
ERNESTO STASSANO, OF'TURIN, ITALY.
ELECTRIC FURNACE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern I I Be itknown that I, ERNESTO" STAssANo, residing at Turin, Italy,'-have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Furnaces, of specification.
his invention relates to the mounting of rods for carrying electrodes in electric arc furnaces and has for its object to provide an efiicient electrode guide and a thorough cooling of all. parts adjacent to the electrode.
On the accompanying drawing is represented, byway of example, one form of the invention, Figure 1 showing in longitudinal section the chamber that incloses the electrode, Fig. 2 is a cross section along the line a2w of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a section along the line yy of Fig. 1.
As will be seen in the drawing, the chamber, in which is inclosed'the electrode and its rod, consists of av cylindrical element 1 adapted to be mounted on the walL-of'the furnace and with which is connected another element 2 provided at. its lower part with extension 3 of rectangular section. The front wall 4 of the chamber thus constituted is of refractory material and is provided with a central hole through which the electrode 5 passes; around the end of cylinder 1 encircling wall 4 is arranged an annular chamber 6 through which, by means of'conduits 7 and 8, occurs a circulation of water for cooling wall 4.
he casing 2 with a view to its being cooled, has wing members 9 projecting from which the following is a its wall, and there is at its rear end an annular chamber 10 for the circulation of water. Against this end is applied, by means of a ring 11 of insulating material, the plate 12 provided with a.hole suitably coated with insulating material and through which passes rod 13 to which is connected the electrode. This rod carries atits front end a threaded coupling or sleeve llserving for e mounting of the an efficient cooling of the electrode connection it is made hollow and carries within it in the interior of which another tube 16 1s mounted, this tube serving to conduct to the end of the tube 15 thecirculating water the external end of of this rod bility of its posite sleeve lated which is discharged at the rod. The mounting is such as to exclude all possibending. At its front end, op- 14, it is connected to an insubridge piece 17 provided with wheels electrode and to allow Patented Oct. 26, 1915.
Application filed August 24, 19141 Serial No. 858,262.
l8 also insulated with respect to the coupling or sleeve 14 an adapted to travel on the carriage 21- whlch chamber 2 and themselves interconnected by means of the crosspiece 23. arriage 21 is connected by an arm 24vto the rod 25 of a piston movable in cylinder 26 wherein water imparting the desired .movepressure for ments to the electrode is produced.
sulation, the weight of the electrode.
at I claim as my invention and desire to secure by US. Letters Patent is 1. Arrangement ing adjacent to the smelting chamber, a front wall in said wall being cooled by circulating water, a rod to which the electrode is connected, supports for the ends of said rod, members carried by said casing on which said supports may slide, and means for causing said rod to travel in order to control the position of the electrode.
2. Arrangement for mounting the electrodes in electric furnaces comprising a caselectrode, said Wall being cooled by circulating Water, a rod towhich the electrode is connected, a support for the rear end of said rod, slides on which said support may run, an insulated stirrup on the front end of the rod, insulated wheels on said stirrup casing provided. with a hole for the passage of the electrode, said and insulated rails on the bottom of the casing on which said wheels may run, an means for causing said rod' to travel in order to control the position of the electrode. 3. Arrangement formounting the electrodes in electric furnaces, comprising a casing adapted tovbe secured tothe smelting chamber, a front wall insaid casing provided with a hole for the passage of the electrode, said wall being cooled by circulating water, a hollow rod to which the electrode is connected, means for establishing a circulation of water 1n said rod, a support for the rear end of said rod, slides I1 Wh10h' said support may run, an insulated stirrup on the front end of the rod, insulated wheels on said stirrup and insulated rails on the bottom of the casing on wheels may fun, and means for causing said rod to travel in order to control the position of the electrode. I e
4. Arrangement for mounting the electrodes in; electric furnaces, comprising a 'electrode, said wall being which the said' casing adapted to be secpred to the smelting chamber, ribs on said easingfo'r cooling purposes, a front wall in said casing provided with a hole for the passage of the cooled by-circulating water, a hollow rod to which each electrode is connected, means for establishing a circulation of water in" said rod, a support for the rear end of said rod, slides onwhich said support may run, an insulated stirrup on the front end of said rod, insulated wheels on said stlrrup and insulated rails on the bottom of the casing on which the said wheels may run-, and means for causing said' rod to travel in order to control the position of the electrode;
In testimony whereof I. aflix my signature inpresence of two Witnesses.
