STEAM-TURBINE.

Application led November 1l, 1913. Serial No. 800,354.
Steam-Turbines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to steam turbines.
My object is to construct a rugged and simple turbine of fewer parts, more compact and of less weight and first cost and more economical in,l steam and operation than at present obtained.
In the drawing, Figure 1 represents a half outside elevation and a half sectional elevation. Fig. 2 is a sectionat a ofthe blading shown in Fig. 1.

In the drawing, 1 is a valve for admitting steam through nozzle 2, to impulse wheel 3 which is mounted on an enlarged portion on shaft 4 which also carries a disk 5. The shaft l has a collar v6 and a screw threaded portion so that the diskf and the wheel 3 with separator 7 between may by means of nut 8 be forced up against the collar 6. The shaft 4 has shoulders against bearings 9 and 9 so as to prevent end motions. The bea-rings are preferably intact with the covers which are bolted to the flanges of casings 12 and 12, which incloses the disk or wheel 5, and the wheel 3, respectively. v
The cover 10 is provided with stationary blades or vanes 15S-and kthe wall 1,4 of the casing 12 is also provided with'stationary blades or vanes 13. The disk 5 is provided with moving blades or vanes 15 extending out both sides and matches and coperates with blades `13 in the casing 12. The diskis provided with passages as 16 so that the steam from the impulse wheel may alsopass to and through the outer wreaths of blading as well as through` the .inner wreaths of blading. The disk and the casing with the moving and stationary blades respectively forms a reaction turbine receiving steam, that has passed one or more stages, :one being shown, of the turbine provided with impulse wheels and in which the steam has given upl energy, the residue of which is further abstractedv in the reaction bladed part of the turbine having exhaust outlet part 17 leading to the atmospherey or into the condenser.
The disk 5 into which the blades are secured preferably by dovetailing may be made in one casting or forging or it may be made up of rolled steel plates riveted together and connected to the shaft by means of hubs. rlhe moving blades will then be stamped and ground and provided with shoulders and riveted to the steel plates which have holes with nicks or serrations into which the riveted portions are driven so as to prevent turning of the blades.
The disk is shown straight, but it'may be made thick in the center and converging outward uniformly or in steps. The wall lhparticularly opposite the blading 16 on the impulse wheel 3 and opposite the inlet for the steam, may be insulated by asbestos or the non-conducting medium g by a thin plate ring f, secured to the wall 1li, so as to prevent radiation of the heat of the steam leaving the impulse wheel, which has a higher pressiue and temperature than the low pressure steam in the casing l2, through the wall let. rilhe wall lil extends inwardly to where the bladed part of the low pressure reaction blading beg-ins.
rlhe working wheel 8 as shown represents a driving element consisting of animpulse wheel with two pressure stages, however, one or more impulse wheels without pressure stages may be placed in casing 12 if desired.
The wall 10 of cover 10 may have an inlet 25 near the center provided witha valve for the entrance of steam for increasing (boosting), the power of the turbine.
The moving blades may have `notches 20 for inserting strong wires or bands 21 which extend around over all blades of the circle so as to form a strong construction, the wires 21 ibeing wired or nicked over and soldered to the blades. rlhe impulse wheel 3 may be reinforced and be provided with reaction blades coperating with stationary blades secured on wall 14, as shown at C.
The shaft 4f extends through bearing 9 and carries any well known coupling not shown for connection to an electric generator or a pump or for any machinery de sired to operate. rlhe shaft also passes through bearing 9 andis provided with the sov usual means not shown for transmitting motion to a governor operating a steam inlet valve inipipe 23.
rllhe easing 12 of the turbine and also its cover 10 are made in two parts horizontally. Casing .12 and casing 12 may have flanges for bolting the said casings together in case it is desired to have the casings in separate castings. The wall 24 of casing 12 ma also be a cover and connected to the shell of casing l2. which then has a ilange.
In case of two or more impulse stages posed blading, and a series of intermediate pressure blading carried by said high pressure working wheel, a casing for each oiisaid wheels and blades in said easings coperating with the blading in said wheels, an inlet and an outlet for the turbine.
l2. A steam turbine having a high pressure working wheel provided with a series of radial extending blading and also pro`- vided 4with a series oi" axially extending blading and a low pressure working wheel having axially disposed blading, all as set forth. y Y
3.- A steam turbine having a high pressure vworkingwheel provided with a series of radialextending blading and also provided with a series of axially extending blading, and a low pressure working Wheel having axially disposed blading and stationary blading fixed in the walls of the turbine'co-acting with the said blading carried by the said working wheels.
4.. A prime mover, providedwith a primary wheel having impulse driving elements on its periphery and having reaction dri ving elements on yits side, a casing for said wheel, means in said casing coperating with the said driving` elements on the wheel, a non-conducting element in said casing, a
. cover for said non-conducting element. and
means for securing said element and the cover therefor to the casing.
5. A prime mover provided with a primary wheel having driving elements on its periphery and having driving elements on its side, a casing for said wheel, means in said casing coperating with the said driving elements on the wheel, a secondary wheel having driving elements on each side thereof, a casing for said wheel, means in said casing coperating with said driving element on the secondary wheel, an inlet to the primary wheel, an outlet from said primary wheel leading to the secondary wheel and an auxiliary inlet to said secondary wheel and an exhaust outlet;
6. A prime mover provided with a primary wheel having impulse driving eleh ments on its periphery and having reaction driving elements on its side, a ea sing for said wheel, elements in said easing cooperating with the said drivingelements on the wheel, a motive fluid inlet for the casing, and an insulation secured to said casing, said insulation being axially opposite the inlet ot the casing as shown and for the purpose set forth.
7. A steam turbine, comprising a easing having a wall provided with an inlet, and a wall provided with an outlet and a series oi blades extending inwardly, and also provided with an inclosing wall having a series of blades extending inwardly. a wheel in said casing having blades cooperating with the blades in the said side wall and in the said inclosing wall, all as shown and as set forth.
8. A steam turbine, comprising a casing having a wall provided with an inlet, and a wall provided with an outlet and a series of blades extending inwardly, and also provided with an inclosing wall having a series of blades extending inwardly, a wheel in said casing having blades cooperating with the blades in the said side wall and in the said inclosing wall, and a non-conducting `mea-ns within said casing, opposite the inlet for said casing and a means for securing said non-conductor in said casing, all as shown and set forth.
9. A steam turbine, comprising a casing, a working wheel within said casing. driving" elements radially disposed on said wheel. and driving members axially disposed on said wheel members in said casing coperating with said driving members on the wheel, an insulation in said casing, an inlet, and an outlet for said casing.
10. A steam turbine, comprisinga casing, av working wheel within said casing, driving elements radially disposed on said wheel, and driving members axially disposed on said wheel members in said casing coperating with said driving members on the wheel, an insulation in said casing, an inlet, and an outlet for said casing, a second casing, a wheel in said casing, opposite axially extending blading in said wheel, blading in said casing, coperating with said blading in the wheel, inlets to said blading, an auxiliary inlet to said blading, and an exhaust outlet to the atmosphere or to a condenser.
11. A steam turbine, comprising a shaft.l
Wheels mounted on said shaft, a separator between said Wheels on said shalt, a casing inclosing each oi' said Wheels, an inlet to one of said Wheels, and inlets for the other of said Wheels, an outlet for the last named Wheel, driving members on the Wheels and eoperating` members in the casing for said Wheels, and a non-conducting means in one of said casings opposite the inlet therefor and for the driving members of the Wheel.
12. A steam turbine having an impulse wheel, a casing therefor, reaction blades o n said impulse Wheel, stationary blades on one side oi one Wall of said Casing coperating with the said reaction blading on the I impulse Wheel, a Wheel having opposite eX- tending reaction blades, a casing for said wheel, the Walls of said casing having blades cooperating With the reaction blades-on the said Wheel, a pasage in said wheel and a passage in one of said Walls, and a comma nicating passage for said Casings, and an exit from said casing.
