Description
A RREY. PAPER REEL BRAKE. APPLICATION FILED NOV. 10, I913.
Patented Oct. 19, 1915.
ARTHUR 'IERBEY, OF HAYES, ENGLAIiTDJ- ASSIGNOR' TO THE GOSS PRINTING PRESS COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
PAPER-REEL BRAKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 19, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR TERREY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Hayes, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Paper-Reel Brakes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to paper reel brakes for printing machines of the rotary web type in which each paper reel is supplied with a brake or tension device for the purpose of regulating the tension on the paper as it is unwound from the reel and it has for its object the provision of new and improved means for tightening the tension devices relative to the reel operable either from a common control station of the machine or from a position adjacent to the reel.
In order that the said invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect the same will be described more fully with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 a
side elevation showing the means which are situated contiguous to each of the paper reels for regulating their tension devices and their longitudinal adjusting device from the control station.
Like letters of reference are used to indicate similar parts in all the figures.
Referring to Figs. 1 and- 2, A is the framing of the machine and B the spindle of one of the paper reels.
C C are the brake shoes surrounding the brake pulley D with which each reelspindle is provided.
E is the usual hand wheelforming part of the internally screw threaded sleeve 6 which engages the correspondingly threaded eye bolt c pivoted to one .of the brake shoes viz: C and .passing through the slot 0 in the other'brake shoe C; by turning the hand wheel E in the proper direction more or less I pressure can be exerted upon the brake shoes causing them either to approach or recede from each other according. tothe degree of tension required on the reel spindles as is well understood. One of the brake shoes of each brake pulley is formed with lugs c 0 between which is freely mountedthe shorter arm 7 of a bell crank lever pivotally suprelative to said reel, a bell-crank lever otally mounted on said slotted brake-shoe ported on a pin 0 carried by the said lugs. The said shorter arm f is slotted so as to embrace the saidveye bolt 6' at the portion between the end of the said sleeve e and the slotted portion of one of the brake shoes.
The longer arm f of'the said bell crank lever lies adjacent to an arm G which is mounted on the end of the-spindle 9 carried by the framing of the machine, the other end of said spindle 9 being furnished with a lever 9 which is connected at one end with a spring 9 and at the other end to the Bowden or other wire H leading to the control station. The position occupied by the longer arm f of the said bell crank lever relatively to the arm G is such that the movement of the latter when actuated from the control station through the intervention of the wire H and the lever 9 will be transmitted to the longer arm of the bell crank lever, which will turn about the pin 0 and cause the shorter arm 7' to exert a pull upon the eye bolt in a directionto compel the brake shoes of brake-shoes pivotally connected together and frictionally engaging said reel between them for controlling the rotation of the reel 'as the web is drawn therefrom, a screwthreaded eye-bolt pivotally mounted on one of said brake-shoes and adapted to engage a slot in the other brake-shoe, a nut mounted on said eye-bolt for drawing said brakeshoes toward each other for tightening them pivand having one arm interposed between said nut and the brake-shoe, and means for swlnging said bell-crank lever for further tightening said brake-shoes relative to said reel.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR TERREY. Witnesses: L. MELLERSH-JACKSON, T. SELBY WARDLE.
