Be it knownthat I, Frrz W1LLIAM.SAR- GENT, a citizen of the'Unit'ed States, and a residentgofI-Mahwah, inthe county-of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have made-l and "inventedcertain new and-useful 1m provements in ,Backs for'Brake-Shoes, of
i which the following is a specification.
This invention "relates to aflreinforcing.
back for brake shoes, and concerns in part cular the securement of the wrought metal lug to the reinforcing back, the object of the invention being to accomplish 'theforegoing in such manner that the reinforcing back will not be weakened thereby, as has=- been the case when the transverse width of the central portion of the back has been reduced, in order that the ends of the lug could be bent therearound.
A further object is to ofiset the central portion of the reinforcing back, and against which the toes of the lug are bent, so that the latter do not extendto any considerable depth Within the cast body of the shoe, allowing the same to be entirely worn away without the lug being cut or severed from the shoe. A further object is to effect the securement of the lug to the steel back insuch manner .that the toes of the lug do not extend to any considerable distance in the body metal of the shoe, and to accomplish the foregoing without requiring-other than i 'a slight offsetting or crimping. of therein forcing back, and thus eliminating the possibilities of the reinforcing back becoming cracked or injured during. the formation of.
such offset. j 3 Other objects and advantages will appear as the description proceeds, wherein it is to be understood that changes in the precise tion.

Specification of Letters Patent t t Oct 19 5 Application filed July-27 1915. Seria1 No.4 2,137. I
7 improved reinforcing back and securing lug,
the, section beingjtaken at the transverse median plane of the brake shoe; Fig. Lis a fragmental view in perspective of the reinforcing back and the attaching lug.
Referring specifically to the several views,
usual openings 6, for the reception of the cast metal of .thebody of the shoe, aiding in The spacing of the sides of the; lug ofxa,
brake shoe being fixed, and somewhat less than the width 1 of the reinforcing back, it hasbeen heretofore the practice to reduce the width of the central portion of the reinforcing back in order toreceive the ends of the lug therearound, such practice resulting in the material weakening of the back, and in order to overcome this, and at the same time to obtain the proper spacingv of the sides of the lug, I provide the reinforcing back 5, which is of substantially uniform Width throughout, with the longitudinally extending, and spaced, slits 7. These slits are spaced a distance from the side edges of the reinforcing back and are -.the reinforcing back 5'is provided withthe formed by the shearing of the metal of the back by the forcingupward, and offsetting,
of the central portion 8. As the central portion of the back is upwardly offset, the portions 9 of the back which lie to the sides of the slits 7 are downwardly offset to a distance approximately equal to, but opposite from, the upward offset of the central por- The shearing and offsetting of the portions of the back as thus outlined, iresults'in the formation of the two spacedconfronting openings .10.
- The attachinglug 11, which is preferably formed of wrought metal, has the sides 12 bent through the confronting openings 10, and the toes 13 bent up into contact and engagement with the raised or upwardly offset portion 8 of the reinforcing back. The body, 14 of the shoe is cast upon the reinforcing back in theusual manner, and
portions thereof flow up and around the sides of the wrought metal lug so as to rein-- force and supplement the same.
Thereinforcing back being of substantially uniform width throughout, is not in any wise weakened by the attachment of the securing lug, and the upward and down- 'Ward offsetting of the central and sidepora tions of the reinforcing baek,-resulting, jasr it does, in the formation of confronting openings 10, reduces, and practically chm inates,"the likelihood ofthereinforcing back becoming fractured or injured by such formation, and as sometimes happens When v the reinforcing back is i upwardly bridged v or ofl set'only'. The downward vofit'se t of the" sides of the back, and theslight protrusion of the toes of the lug below the general planeof the back do notinterfere'with, nor
