ENGINE MOUNTING.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.9. 1915,

WITNESSES: I INVENTOR I I WW CHAHL 5 6. MAHA/Vfl Br oHAnLEs G. MAHANA, or. THREE RIVERS, MICHIGAN, Assienonmo sn-Errmnn can COMPANY, or THREE nivnas, MICHIGAN.
ENGINE-MOUNTING.
My improvements are especially designedby me for embodiment in engines adapted to be mounted on hand cars and the like thus converting them into motor cars and I have shown the same embodied in sucha structure in the accompanying drawing although desirable for use in other relation.
The main objects of thisinvention are to provide an improved mounting for engines by means of which the engine may be adjustedon-its base to properly tension the driving belts.
Further objects, and objects relating to details and economies of construction and operation will definitely appear from the bodying the features of my invention. Fig.
II is an enlarged detail side view of the base and the fulcrum link for the adjusting lever. Fig. III is a detail horizontal section on the line corresponding to line 3-3 of Fig. II. Fig. IV is a detail end view showing the arrangement of the ways in the base and of the engine slides disposed therein.
In the drawings, similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing 1 represents the platform of a hand car provided with carrying and traction wheel 2. r The hand car shown is of the push car type although my improved engine may be readily mounted on a hand car having a gallows frame and walking beam with suitable driving connections. Q ,The engine base 3. which 1s 1n the natur G. MAHANA,
its fulcrum pin.
I Specification of Letters Patent. Pettnted ()Qt, 19,19 15. 7 Application filed August 9, 1915. Seria1No.44,399. I
of a subbaseis provided with attaching bolts 4. The base 3 has longitudinal groovelike facing-ways .5 in which the slides 6 on] the engine .7 are disposed so as to 'slidablysupport the same" The engine is shown in conventional form as its details are not important.
STATE m m 'Theadjustinglever 8 is pivoted at 9 on I the side of the engine and provided with a ratchet 1O coacting with the rack 11 Y for retaining the lever inits adjusted positions. At its lowerend the lever is provided with; a laterally projecting fulcrum pin 12. The fulcrum link 13 is pivotallymounted on the engine base at 1a to embracethe lever above The fulcrum link has'a series of downwardly facing notches 15 adapted each toreceive the fulcrum pin so that it may be'shifted. The spring 16 is arranged under the tail'end of the link to hold it in engagement with the fulcrum pin.
The fulcrum is adjusted by'liftin'g the fulcrum link to disengage it from the pin and engaging the pinrw'ith another notch. This increases the-scope of the adjustment of the engine on the base. upon its base, which. may be accomplished by means of the lever 8, the driving; belt 17 is tightened or loosened a desired. By providing the adjustable fulcrum for the lever, a considerable scope of adjustment is secured. I
My improvements are especially designed by me for use in engines for the driving of motor cars and particularly where the engines are added as an attachment or addition to cars already in use as it obviates the necessity for particular care in setting the engine and may be adjusted to properly tension the driving belt. The embodiment of my improvements illustrated is very simple and practical and the adjustment embody "or adapt the same as conditions may require.
Havmg thus descrlbed my 1nvent1on,what
I claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent is 1. In a structure of theclass described,-
By sliding the engine the combination with-an engine, of a base having facing groovelike ways therein, said engine having slide members disposed in said ways whereby the'engine is slidably upported on the base, a lever mounted on said engine and provided with a laterally projecting fulcrum pin at its lower end, a retaining ratchet for said lever, a yoke-like fulcrum link pivotally mounted on said base to embrace the lower end of said lever above its fulcrum pin and having a plurality of downwardly facing notches therein adapted to receive said fulcrum pin, and a spring acting on said fulcrum link to hold it in engagement with said pin.
2. In a structure of the class described, the combination with an engine, of, a base on which said engine is adj ustably mounted, a lever mounted on said engine and provided with a laterally projecting fulcrum pin at its lower end, a retaining ratchet for said lever, a yoke-like fulcrum link pivotally mounted on said base to embrace the lower end of said lever above its fulcrum pin and having a plurality of downwardly facing notches therein adapted to receive aid fulcrum pin, and a spring acting on said fulcrum link to hold it in engagement with said pin.
3. In a structure of the class described, the combination with an engine, of a base on which said engine is mounted for ad justment, a lever pivotally mounted on said engine, said lever being provided with means for retaining it in its adjusted positions andhaving a laterally projecting pin at its lower end, a fulcrum link pivotally mounted on said. base and having a plurality of notches therein adapted to receive said pin, and a spring for holding said link in engagement with said pin.
a. In a structure of the class described, the combination with an engine, of a base on which said engine is mounted for adjustment, a lever pivotally mounted on said engine and provided with means for retaining it in its adjusted positions, a fulcrum pin on said lever, and a fulcrum link mounted on said base, said fulcrum pin being adjustably engaged with said link.
5. In a structure of the class described, the combination with an engine, of a base on which said engine is mounted for ad justment,-a lever pivotally mounted on said engine and provided with means for retaining it in its adjusted positions, a fulcrum pin on said lever, and a fulcrum link mounted on said base.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses;
