IMPROVEMENT IN HANKS FOR SAlLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,712, dated June 6, 1871.

This invention relates to that class ot' hanks or mast-hoops in which said articles are made in two or more parts, hinged or otherwise connected together, and capable oi' opening so as to be placed around the mast or stay, and through the eyelet-holes, and then of being closed and fastened to hold the sail; audit consists in an improved construction of said hoops or hanlrs, whereby the operation of opening and closing them is facilitated, and a more effective and convenient device is produced at less cost than heretofore.
In the drawing, D D represent the two jaws of the hanlr or hoop, articulated together at U, and having their ends beveled, and when closed overlapping each other. The parts D D are bent toward each other so as to meet at the center, thus forming two loops, one of which incloses the mast or stay and the otherthe boltrope of the sail. At the point where the said parts D D thus come together at the center of the device a mortise-and-shoulder, J, is formed on one side, and a snap-catch, A., operated by a spring, B, is attached to the other side, so as to enter the mortise, snap over the shoulder, and hold the two sides of the hoop firmly locked together when closed. To open them it, ot' course, is only necessary to release the catch from the shoulder of the mortise and separate the loose ends of the jaws D D.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The bank or mast-hoop herein described, consisting of the jaws D D, hinged at C, and bent in the forni described, in combination with the spring-catch A B and the mortise-andshoulder J, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
