acitizen of the United States,-residing at Englewood, county of Bergen, State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Printing-Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts. i
This invention relates to improvements 1n printing machines of the general type which V is usually employed in printing cards, labels,
advertisements, form letters, etc. 15 v The particular embodiment of the invention disclosed herein is arranged for the printing of pin tickets which comprise cards having attached laterally projecting pins near one edge which are adapted to be 1nserted into and secured to bolts of cloth, garments and various other kinds of merchandise. r a
The general object of thisinvention is to provide a. compact and relatively simple printing machine in which the chase containing the type may be positioned'in front of a reciprocating platen for printing and desirably may be transferred from such position into proximity to a suitable type magazine from which the type may be inserted directly into the chase, or the type in the chase redistributed into the various compartments of the magazine after the printing operation has been completed. f
'A further object of the invention is to provide a machine which does not require the Q attendance of a skilled operator or type setter and which may be used by the ordinary employee of an office or shop.

One of the preferred forms of my in vention is disclosed herein as embodied in a machine for printing pin tickets, the main frame of the machine comprising a base 1 with preferably integral end standards 2, 3, having ways 4, 5 in which are slidably mounted the ends 6, 7 of a carriage 8 in which the chase 9 for the type is slidably mounted, preferably upon rods 10 and 11 secured to the ends 6, 7 of said carriage as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the sliding movement of the chase being adapted to permit it to be positioned in proper relation to the other elements of the printing mechanism and also to be placed in proximity to a type magazine from which the type may be introduced directly intothe chase or redistributed therefrom into the proper chambers of said magazine.
The printing mechanism includes a bed 12 which may be the surfaced face of an integral standard 13 extending upwardly from the base 1 and desirably provided with a strengthening rib or web 14:, and a platen 15 suitably supported upon a pivoted arm 16 which desirably may be carried by an adjustable base plate 17 resting upon the bed 1. Any suitable mechanism may be used for oscillating the platen 15 and its arm 16, as disclosed herein. This compfises a pitman 18 pivotally connected to said arm 16 and embracing an eccentric 19 upon a shaft 20 mounted in suitable lugs 21, extending upwardly from a standard 23 which may be suitably secured to the bed of the machine, said shaft 20 being provided with a gear 2% meshing with a worm 25 on the shaft 26 of a suitable electric motor 27 supported in any convenient manner from the base of the machine, as by means of ears 28 extending from the motor casing and secured to a standard 29 extending upwardly from the bed plate by means of a bolt 30 and thumb nut 31.
The type magazine is preferably rotatably mounted in bearings-at the upper ends of standards 32 and 33 located at any convenient position or as shown herein, midway between the printing mechanism and the vertical standard 3. The delivery end of the magazine is so disposed that the chase may be moved in its ways in close proximity thereto to receive type ejected from any of the several chambers thereof in the manner which will hereinafter be described. The type magazine is desirably in the form of a hollow cylindrical drum 3% one end 35 of which may be integral with the peripheral portion and connecting the same to an integral concentric cylindrical sleeve 36 by means of which it may be secured to thehollow shaft 37 in any suitable manner as by means of set screws 38. The hollow shaft 37 is mounted in suitable bearings in the standards 32 and 33 and may be provided with an annular recess 39 within one of said bearings to receive the end of a screw all) extending downwardly through the bearing cap into said annular recess in the manner illustrated in Fig. a. The periphery of the drum is desirably provided with a series of parallel slots 41 each of which is adapted to receive a plurality of type 43 which are slidably secured therein in such a manner that they may not drop out of the slot radially but may be forced out of the end of the drum into the positioned chase through a notch 42 in a suitable retaining plate 42, the walls of said notch 42 being beveled so that rotation of the drum will force the re maining type back into the chamber to provide a clearance between the type in the chase and those in the type chamber.
It is desirable that the type be so formed that no type can be inserted into an improper magazine. This preferably is accom plished by providing each of the slots with one or more ribs 4A engaging corresponding recesses l5 in the type, or vice versa, and these recesses may be so positioned that no type may be introduced into an improper slot or chamber in the magazine. In order'to set up the type the chase is positioned in. front of the magazine drum as illustrated in Fig. 4, the milled disk 82 thereupon rotated to throw the rack 71 into' engagement with the pinion 70, the depressionf'of the hand-knob 58 will thereupon causethe longitudinal movementlof the actuator 57 which then abuts at itsrear endagainst the end of the positioned rack forc ing the same 'rearwardly and thereby rotating thepini0n70 and its attached segmental arms 68' c'ausingthe forward movement of" the block 60 and its attached. plunger so that the. latter enters the reare'nd of the magazine chamber and forces the type forward a sufficient'distance to deposit one type in the chase. ,The operator then rotates the hand wheel 53 until the next letter 0r'de chase and the operation is repeated un'til the line of type isfset; up, the chase being sired characterjis positioned in front of the 1 advanced each time by escapement mechanism which will hereinafter be described.

The plunger 88 is seated within a suitable recess in said stand and is maintained in retracted position by means-of a helical spring 90, the plunger 88 being positioned directly in front of the positioned chase and adapted to thrust the type from said chase into the chamber of the magazine. It will be understood from reference to the drawings that the type setting plunger 59 and the distributing plunger 88 are in the vertical axial plane of the drum asillustrated herein.
The pivoted arm 88 is normally held in the inoperative position shown in Fig. 1 by means of a helical spring 91 which rests against the face of the standard 38 and the back of the arm 88. It has been heretofore explained that the actuation of the setting up mechanism and the redistributing mechanism must be mutually exclusive and it will be obvious by reference to the drawings, especially Fig. r that when the arm 88 is positioned to actuate the distributingplunger 9" as'illustrated in Fig. l the rack 71 will be disengaged from the gear or pinion which actuates the type setting plunger and that in order to place the gear into engagement with the pinion 70 to actuate the type setting plunger 59 the milled disk 82 must be rotated to causethe cam 79 to raise the pivoted bloclrandthe rack 71,-and that such rotation of the milled dislrwill take the upper end of the arm 83 away from-the downwardly projecting pin 87 of the plunger 88 so that the rearward movement of the upper end of the arm 88 will not engage the pin 87 to actuate the plunger 90. The chase 9 as illustrated herein comprises longitudinal extensions 95, 96 adapted to give the same a long bearing surface upon the guide rods 10, 11 and also to provide means for sup 3orting a suitable escapement rack by means of which the chase may be positioned properly to receive successive type.
The type holding portion of the chase slide as disclosed herein consists of a metal plate desirably of brass having a plurality of slots 97, 98 and 99 the upper portion of each slot being provided with beveled serrations 100 to receive the corresponding beveled tops 101 of the type. The lower portion of each slot is under-cut or depressed 'as at 102 to form a rest for the end of the type. By reason of this construction the type, when inserted in the chase, is firmly held from displacement and the use of justi fying or clamping mechanism avoided.
The chase slide 95 is provided with a toothed rack 108 see Figs. 6 and 7 having teeth corresponding in width to the thickness of a type bar recess in the chase. The chase slide is normally drawnaway from printing position as bv a suitable spring or by a cord or metal band 101 attached to a spring actuated drum 105 suitably supported upon the carriage 8.
Any suitable escapement may be provided for permittingthe feeding of the chase during the type setting or distributing operations. In the embodiment of the invention shown herein such an escapement comprises a vertical shaft 100 having an attached plate 107 engaging a pin 108 projecting laterally from an arm 109 carried by the pivoted arm 88, said shaft being rotatably mounted under the tension of a spring 110. The upper end of the shaft 106 is provided with a plate 111 carrying'a pair of dogs 112 and 118, the
dog 112 being rigid with said plate and the doc; 113 pivotally mounted thereon and normally pressed into engagement with the rack by aspring 11 1.
1n the operation of the type setting or distributing mechanism a slight depression of the knob 58 causes the rearward movement of the arm 88 through the collar 92 whether to set up type in the chase or to transfer a type from the chase into the magazine. This rearward movement of the arm 88 depresses the pin 108 and permits the spring 110 to rotate the shaft 106 and thereby to cause the dog 112 to engage a tooth in the rack bar 103 at the same time releasing the dog 113 fromengagement therewith and permitting the rack to advance one step as is usual in escapements ofthis character so that uponthe introduction of successive type into the chase or upon the redistribution of a successive type from the chase the carriage will automatically advance. It will be understood that the dog 113 is pivotally mounted to permit the chase tobe moved into printing position, said dog riding upv over the inclined faces of the teeth of therack 103 when the chase is so moved.
In view of the fact that the chase slide is always under tension from the spring drum and to avoid any undue shock from and hold the same in depressed position until the chase slide reaches type setting position. When in this position thelchase slide will be engaged by the dog113 of the escapement and from that time on will be under the control of .the escapement in the manner aforesaid. I
hen the chase slide is moved into printing position the end of the magazine drum would normally be exposed so that the actuation of the type setting plunger would thrust the type out of the magazine thereby permitting the emptying of the magazine 7 and the loss of type. In order to prevent such action and to make the machine foolproof I have'provided a bar 117 which is adapted to be moved into the vertical plane of the aXis of the drum, and directly in front of the plungers; which actuate the type, as the chase is transferred to printing position. This bar 117 is desirably slidably mounted upon the guide rods 10 and 11 and is provided on its forward face with an iron plate 118 which forms an armature for a horse-shoe magnet 119, said horse-shoe magnet being secured within the extension of the chase slide so that when the chase slide approaches its extreme position in the settingup of type the armature Wlll come into contact with the endsof the legs of the horse-shoe magnet and upon the movement of the chase slide from the setting up position to printingposition said armature and the attached bar 117 will" be carried with the slide until the plane of the axis of'the drum is reached. whereupon the armature bar engages a stop which looks the same from further movement and protects the magazine from discharging type, even though the setting up plunger may be de-' pressed. The stop for the bar aforesaid may consist of a spring pressed dog 117 located in the under portion of said movable armature bar 117 and adapted to engage a notch 117 in the under guide rod'lO, as
shown in detail in Fig. 8.

depressed to insert the type into the chase. During the initial movement of the actuator 57' the escapement is released and the chase slide advanced one step. the remainder of the movement of the actuator .57 causes the actuation of the plunger v59 to introduce one type bar from the magazine into the chase. The neXt character is then selected and the operation repeated until the first line of type is sea-thereupon the lever 125 is depressed to elevate the chase carriage sufiiciently to bring the second slot of thechase into alinement with the upper chamber 0f the magazine, whereupon the operation is repeated until the second line is set and'so onfor the succeeding line or lines asrthe case may be. It is'to be understood .of course that while but three-lines are provided in the chase illustrated herein the machine may be adapted for a greater number of lines of printing and also that the lines maybe longer than indicated herein. It is also to be understood that while the type drum 7 shownin this application has but a single set of grooves in its upper face the magazine may be so constructed as to have two, three, or more concentric rows of type chambers and that mechanism may be provided for positioning the drum so that the type may be introduced into or distributed from any set of chambers. When the desired subject matter has been set up in the chase the-slide is moved to position the chase in front of the bed 12 of the standard 13 in the position indicated in Fig. 10 so that the forward movement of the platen will cause the card or other article to be printed to be pressed against the type, there being an inked ribbon interposed between the type and the card in the manner usual in printing machines using an inked ribbon. In order that the inked ribbon may always be properly positioned in respect to the platen and bed the spools 130 and 131 carrying the ribbon are supported upon suitable brackets 132 projecting laterally from the rear face of the carriage 8. Any suitable mechanism may be utilized for causing the rotation of the spindles upon which the spools are mounted.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention shown herein the spindles 133 of the spools are provided with toothed disks 134; which are adapted to be engaged by spring pressed pawls 135, said pawls being pivoted to the underside of the brackets and each having tail portions extending toward the platen. A slidable plate 136 may be secured to the rear face of the oscillating platen and may be adapted to be shifted into position to engage either one or the other of the pawls aforesaid to cause the automatic rotation of the ribbon spools in the usual manner, the plate 136 being of sufficient width to engage said pawls wherever the carriage may be positioned in respect to the platen whether printing one, two or three lines.
I have found it desirable to provide two means for adjusting the platen so that it may properly coiiperate with the type in the chase and may also be slightly adjusted to compensate for wear or to position the pin tickets properly in respect to the lines of type in the chase. 1n the preferred embodiment of my invention shown herein the i platen 15 is supported upon the arm 16 by 'means of an adjusting screw 13S passing through an extension 139 projecting rearwardly from said platen. The arm 15 as before stated is pivotally mounted upon a shaft 137 in lugs extending upwardly from the adjustable base 17, the adjustment of the support 17 being effected through a threaded rod 140 which is connected to a milled nut 141" having a groove 142 which receives the forked end 14:3 of a retaining plate 14: 1 which maybe secured to the standard 23 of "the machine in any desired manner as by printing mechanism.

Any suitable mechanism may be provided for delivering the articles to be printed to the printing mechanism. The forward portion of the ways may be inclosed by plates 152 suitably secured to the'guide 149. Pins 153 in serted in the guide 1 19 at its top portion adapted to rest upon the upper end of the standard 146 form a convenient means for supporting this removable guide in position. It will be understood that guides of various widths may be provided. which will be adapted to direct pin tickets of different sizes to the printing mechanism.
' An inclined magazine 15% is desirably secured. to the standard and supported therefrom by means of plates 155 secured to said chute and to the standard in any suitable manner. The tickets are adapted to be arranged in the chute in overlapping condition as illustrated in Fig. 9 and may be supported at the lower end of the chute by a ledge 156 having a recess 157 communicating with an aperture 158 through the chute through which a trip 159 for delivering the pin tickets one at a time is adapted to pass. The trip 159 is desirably pivotally mounted upon a plate 160 which in turn is mounted upon a shaft 161 journaled' in suitable bearings 162 on the under side of the chute, the shaft 151 being provided with an arm 163 which is oscillated through a link 16 con- 7 nected to an arm 16?) which is rigidly secured to and oscillates with the pivotal shaft 137 of the platen supporting arm 16, (see Fig. 2.
The arm 165 is desirably attached to the timing of the feeding mechanism relatively to the reciprocation of the platen. It will be obvious that upon each oscillation of the platen the arm 165'will be oscillated, causing a reciprocation of the rod 154l-Wl1i0h in turn will oscillate the arm 163 and its attached shaft 161 causing an oscillation of the plate 160.'which will withdraw the trip 159 through the aperture 158 in the bottom of the chute. It will be noted that the mechanism for delivering the pin tickets from the chute is operated by the movable platen and if the pin tickets were permitted to drop directly into printing position they would be likely to rebound so that they would be improperly positionedin respect to the printing mechanism when engaged by the platen. In order to avoid this I have provided a mechanism for arresting the tickets in thei'rdescent just before-they reach the top of the platen and for releasingthe same so that the pin'swill rest upon and engage'the top of the platen as the same moves forward to complete the printing operation. In the preferred embodiment of my invention disclosed herein this arresting mechanism comprises an L- shaped plate 174 the forward projection 175 of which is adapted to: receive the pins 6 of the pin tickets a as the latter are dropped through the guide 149. The clutch mechanism'maybe similar to or identical with that disclosed in my prior applications No. 820,069 for typewriter duplicatingmachines, and No. 717,025-for tag sewing machines in which a half-round rod is so journaled in the shaft and a surrounding sleeve carrying the gear that it may be rotated to permit the free rotation of the shaft upon 7 the gear, or maybe rotated to lock the shaft and sleeve of-the gear in positive engagement. VVh1le this clutch mechanism is not illustrated herein in detail the end of the unlocking half-round pin 180 is visible in Fig. 2 ofthe drawing, this pin is adapted to be oscillated by a laterally extending arm 182 (see Fig. 3) which is adapted to engage the upper end of an arm 183 extending upwardly from. the end of a transverse shaft 184- which desirably may be provided with a hand lever 185 having suitable indications thereon to show whether the arm 183 is in or out of clutch engaging position, for example one end of the .lever 185 may-be marked 01f and the other marked On. It will .be obvious that the depression ofjone' end of the lever 185 will rock the shaft 184 and its attached arm183 so that the upper end of the latter will come in the path of the clutch arm 182 and that the depression of the other end of the arm 185 will take the upper end of the arm out of the path of the clutch member.
The machine for printing pin tickets illustrated herein is of small size and adapted to be easily transported and l have illustrated the same as standing upon a suitable cabinet 186 which may be provided with a suitable drawer 187 to receive tools, type, etc., and also may be provided with a curved delivery chute 188 for directing the printed tickets from the machine.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a machine of the class described, printing mechanism including a chase, a type magazine, and means for transferring said chase from printing position into proximity to said magazine whereby the type may be introduced from said magazine directly into said chase and means for advancing the chase step by step as successive type are introduced.
2. In a machine of the class described, printing mechanism including a chase, a chambered type magazine and a guideway for said chase whereby the same may be shifted from printing position into proximity to said magazine to permit the introduction of type from said magazine directly into said chase, or the distribution of the type from said chase into the proper chambers of the magazine and means for advancing the chase step by step as successive type are introduced into or removed from the chase.
3. In a machine of the class described, printing mechanism including a chase having a series of type receiving recesses, a chambered type magazine and a guideway for said chase whereby the same may be shifted from printing position into proximity to said magazine to permit the introduction of type from said magazine directly into the respective recesses of said chase, or the distribution of the type from said chase directly into the proper chambers of the magazine, and means for preventing the improper distribution of the type.
4:. In a machine of the class described, printing mechanism including a chase, chambered type magazine and a guideway for said chase whereby the same may be shifted from printing position into proximity to said magazine to permit the introduction of type directly from said chase into he proper chambers of the magazine, and means for preventing the improper distribution of the type comprising cooperating ribs or grooves upon each type and the wall of its chamber so disposed as to prevent the introduction of any type other than the one designed tobe received by this particular chamber.
5. In a machine of the class described, printing mechanism including a chase, a rotatable cylindrical type magazine having a series of circumferentially arranged chambers each of which is adapted to receive a plurality of type, a guideway for said chase normal to the axis of the magazine to permit the same to be placed in printing position or in proximity to the delivery end of said magazine, means for selecting the type and means for transferring the same from the type chambers of the magazine directly into the chase.
6. In a machine of the class described, printing mechanism including a chase, a rotatable cylindrical type magazine having a series of circumferentially arranged chambers each of which is adapted to receive a plurality of type, a guideway for said chase normal to the axis of the magazine to per mit the same to be placed in printing position or in proximity to the delivery end of said magazine, means for selecting the type comprising a dial having characters disposed in the same radial lines asthe corresponding type characters in said chambers, an indicator positioned to determine the point at which the type is to be transferred from the magazine to the chase, and means for transferring the same from the type chambers of the magazine directly into the chase.
7. In a machine of the class described, printing mechanism including a chase, a rotatable cylindrical type magazine having a series of circumtt'erentially arranged chambers each of which is adapted to receive a plurality of type, a guideway for said chase normal to the axis of the magazine to permit the same to be placed in printing position or in proximity to the delivery end of said magazine, means for selecting the type and means for transferring the same from the type chambers of the magazine directly into the chase comprising a plunger adapted to enter the rear end of a selected type chamber and engage the type therein and means for actuating Said plunger.
8. In a machine of the class described, printing mechanism including a chase, a rotatable cylindrical type magazine having a series of circumferentially arranged chambers each of which is adapted to receive a plurality of type, a guideway for said chase to permit the same to be placed in printing position or in proximity to the delivery end of said magazine, means for selecting the type and means for transferring the same from the type chambers of the magazine directly into the chase comprising a plunger adapted to enter the rear end of a selected type chamber and engage the type therein, an actuator for said plunger disposed axially bers' each of which is adapted to receive a ofthe magazine cylinder'and means adapted I to connect said actuator rod'to said plunger.

17 In a machine of the class described comprising printing mechanism including a chase having a series of transverse type holding recesses, a rotatable type magazine having a plurality of type chambers adapted to hold the type in parallelism with the axis of the magazine, means for position ing said chase in proximity to the deliveryend of said magazine, means for relatively positioning a selected type chamber and the type holding recess in said chase, oppositely disposed plungers adapted to thrust the type from said chamber into the recess in said chase or vice versa, a common operating rod for saidplungers and means adapted to connect either plunger to said operating rod and simultaneously to disconnect the other therefrom comprising a lever actuated by said operating rod pivotally mounted to permit its engagement With or disengagement from the distributing plunger and a member operable from said lever to cause the engagement of the operating rod With the mechanism for actuating the setting up plunger When the lever is moved from operative relation to the distributing plunger and vice versa.

In a machine of the class described comprising printing mechanism including a chase having a series of type holding recesses, a rotatable type magazine having a plurality of type chambers, means for positioning said chase in proximity to the deliver end or said ma azine means for rela tively positioning a selected type chamber and the type holding recess in said chase, oppositely disposed plungers adapted to thrust the type from said chamber into the recess in said chase or vice versa, a common operating rod for said plungers and means adapted to connect either plunger to said operating rod and simultaneously to disconnect the other therefrom comprising a lever actuated by said operating rod pivotally mounted to permit its engagement With or disengagement from the distributing plunger and a cam operable by the lateral movement of said lever out of engagement With the distributing plunger adapted to position' a slidable rack in the path of the-end of said operating lever and to cause said rack to engage a pinion having attached slotted segmental arms in operative engagement With said setting up plunger. y?-

Type setting mechanism for printing comprising a chase to receive a line of type, a type magazine having a plurality of type chambers, means for positioning the chase in proximity to the delivery end of said magazine, means for positioning a selected type chamber adjacent to and in alinement with the type receiving recess in said chase, means for inserting a type from said chamber into said recess, and means operable by if the type setting means to cause relative movement between the chase and the magazine to position said chase to receive the next type in the line.

Type setting mechanism for printing Q3 comprisinga chase to receive a line of type, a type magazine having a plurality of type chambers, means for positioning the chase in proximity to the delivery end of said magazine, means for positioning a selected type-chamber adjacent to and in alinement with the type receiving recess in said chase, distributing means for thrusting a type from said chase into the selected type chamber and means operable by distributing 9 means to cause relative movement between the chase and magazine to position the chase properly to deliver the next type to its chambers. Type setting mechanism for printing 190 comprising a chase to receive a line of type, a type magazine having a" plurality of type chambers, means for positioning the chase in proximity to the delivery end of said magazine, means for positioning a selected type chamber adjacent to and in alinement with the type receiving recess in said chase, means for inserting a type from said chamber into'the type receiving recess in said chase to set up the type, means for thrusting a type from the chase into the selected chamber to redistribute said type, mutually exclusive means, for actuating the setting up means or the distributing means, actuated from a single operating lever and means ac- 5 tuated by the initial movement of said lever, either in the setting up or in the distributing operation to advance the chase relative to the positioned chamber of the magazine.

Type setting mechanism comprising a movable type'magazine having a series of type chambers, a chase having a recess to receive a line of type, slidably mounted relatively to the delivery end of said magazine, means for positioning the respective type chambers in alinement With the type receiving recess of the chase, means for inserting type from said chamber into said recess to set up the type, means for thrusting a type from the type holding recess in the chase into a positioned type chamber to distribute the type, an actuator rodzand means for connecting the same eithervto the setting up mechanism or to the distributing mechanism including an Oscillating lever adapted to be positioned to engage the distributing mechanism or to be disengaged therefrom, ascam actuated by said lever when disengaged from the distributing mechanism to cause the engagement of the settingupmechanism and an escapement operable by the initial movements of said lever toadvance the chase step by step duringeither the setting up or the distributing operation. A printing machine comprising a stationary bed, a platen movable relatively thereto, a rotating type magazine having a plurality of type chambers, a chase slidably mounted and adapted to be positioned relatively to said bed and in front of said type chamber, the said chase having a longitudinal type receiving recess provided at its top With a series of acute angular notches, each having one substantially vertical side and adapted to receive a corresponding projection upon the type, and provided at its bottom With a ledge or flange to engage a corre sponding recess in the face of the type, and means for inserting type from selected chambers of the magazine directly into said chase.
