Be it known that I, FRED G. Rooxwoolna citizen of the United States, residing at of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Quick-Acting Wrenches, of which the followingis' a speclfication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. i
My Tnvention relates to wrenches, and particularly to wrenches of that type wherein the movable jaw of the wrench is shiftable quickly into approximate position and afterward tightenedby means mounted upon the handle of the wrench.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a wrench so constructed that it may, be readily'applied and maybe used either as a pipe wrench or as an ordinary wrench.
A further object of the invention is to so construct the wrench that the parts are compactly arranged, may be readily assembled, and may be easily operated.
A further object of theinvention is to provide a wrench of the character described wherein a movable jaw is freely shiftable upon guide rods forming part of the handle shank and is locked in position by a shaft having thereon interrupted screw threads, the shaft being contained entirely withln the shank or handle of the wrench.
Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein I Figure 1 isa side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the actuating shaft turned to its operative position; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, but showing the actu' ating shaft in its inoperative positionfFig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1, also showingthe shaft in its inoperative position.
Referring to these figures, 2 designates the fixed jaw of the wrench and 3 generally denotes the handle shank, which terminates in the handle 4:. Disposed between the members 3 is an ac tuating shaft '11 whose extremity is reduced and pointed and is supported in the socket .7,
this extremity being, designated -12.-- The f two side faces of this shaft 11 are flat while the edge faces of the shafta-re formed with the interrupted screw threads 13 adapted to engage with the interrupted screw threads" 10 of the jaw 8. The shaft 11 is rotated by Y i and is operatively mounted upon a lmurled collar 14:, as clearly shown in Fig. 3.. This collar is provided with inwardly extendingdiametrically disposed screws 15 which pass through the knurled collar and into the butt end of the shaft 11. The knurled collar 14 has suflicient rotation to carry the shaft 11 through a quarter revolution so as to either that the screws 15- form stops for limiting in either direction.
Preferably the jaw 2 and the jaw 8 extend at both ends beyond the shank, the jaws at the rotation of the shaft 11 to a quarter turn one end being provided at their inner faces with the reversely inclined teeth 16 and the inner faces'of the opposite ends of the jaws being smooth. Thustheteeth 16 are adapted to engage a pipe, rod or other cylindrical 7 member which it is desired to rotate, while the other endsof the jaws are adapted to V engage the facets of a nut orlike element. Preferably also the jaw 8 is formed with a bracing portion 17 which extends outward along the face of the adjacent shank member .3 so as to steady the jaw in its movement.
My improvedwrench is adapted to a large variety of uses, as will be obvious. It will also be obvious that the wrench may be very, cheaply constructed and" may be easily assembled, and that it is very effective in action. It is a relatively easy matter to adjust the sliding jaw 8 to the work to be operated on and then to clamp this jaw firmlyin position and bring it up tightly against the work by rotating the knurled collar l t and the shaft 11. It will be seen that with simply a quarter turn to the right the movable jaw 8 is released so that it may be shifted either forward or backward to fit any sized nut within the capacity of the wrench. It will be seen that my invention is very simple, thoroughly effective for the purpose intended, and may be sold at a relatively low cost. tween the members 3 and therefore will not be damaged in use. 'Having described my invention, what I claim is: p
A wrench comprising a handle shank having a solid portion, a jaw mounted thereon, longitudinally extending parallel portions The shaft 11 is entirely housed beand a handle, the solid portion being formed upon its inner face with a socket, a shaft disposed between said parallel portions and having a prolongation bearing in said socket, the shaft having oppositely disposed interrupted screw threaded faces, a collar mounted upon the shank adjacent the handle thereof and having screws engaged with the shaft, said screws acting as stops limiting the collar to a quarter turn, and a movable jaw mounted upon the handle shank for sliding movement and having oppositely disposed interrupted screw threaded faces adapted to be engaged with the screw threaded faces of the shaft upon a quarter turn of the shaft in one direction.
