SUCTION-CLEANER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD M. BARNES, a citizen of they United States, residing at Hastings, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suction- Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in suction cleaners: I
The main objects of this invention are: First, to provide in a suction cleaner, an improved motor structure. Second, to provide in a suction cleaner, an improved motor structure which isassembled as a complete unit'including the fan prior to assembling Third, to provide in a suction cleaner, an lIIIPIOW-sd motor 'structure which is assembled as a unit so that it may be properly tested before assemblingin the cleaner structure proper. Fourth, to provide in a suction cleaner, an improved casing'structure permitting the assembling of the motor unit independently thereof.'-' Fifth, to provide in a suction cleaner, an improved casing formed mainly of sheet metal stampings which is very light and compact and at the same time is rigid and durable.
-Further objects, and "objects relating to structural details-will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.

is a detail horizontal section on a line corresponding to line 6-6 of Fig. IV. Fig. VII is an enlarged detail vertical section on a line corresponding to line 77 of Fig. II. Fig. VIII is an enlarged detail vertical section on a line corresponding to line 88 of Fig. III, with the pipe or hose 4.1 attached. Fig. IX is a perspective view of the pipe or hose attaching coupling.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, the shoe 1 shown is that of my Patent, #1,045,931, dated December 3, 1912. Mounted upon the shoe 1 is a fan casing formed of a pair of pan-like sections EZ and 3, the top section 3 being inverted upon the bottom 2.
The bottom section 2 is provided with an outwardly projecting seam flange 4, while the top section 3 is provided with a coengaging seam flange 5 which rests upon the flange 4c and is folded over and clamped upon the same, as shown in Fig. IV. These casing sections are sheet metal stampings and are provided with integrally formed projeotiong delivery nipple members 6 and 7 respectively, the seam flanges being extended on to these delivery nipple members. The delivery nipple is disposed tangentially of the fan casing, as shown. A ferrule 8 is arranged on the outer end of the nipple and provided with a flaring flange 9 adapted to receive the neck of the dust bag 10.
' The .shoe plate '11 of the shoe is removable,
as is described in detail in my patent referred to. The fan casing is superimposed upon the shoe, there being a reinforcing plate 12 between the top wall of the shoe and the bottom wall of the fan casing. This reinforcing plate is provided with a hinge extension 13 at one side to which the handle 14 is connected. The fan casing is provided with an opening 15 in its top wall through which the fan 16 may be introduced or removed.
I provide a motor frame comprising a bottom member 17 and a top member 18. The bottom member 17 has a plate-like base portion with upwardly projecting spaced posts 19 thereon. The edge of the base projects beyond the posts, as is clearly shown in the drawing. The top frame member 18 is in the form of a bar having cross arms'20 at each end, the cross arms being offset downwardly from the bar. The ends of these cross arms 20 are disposed above the posts.
The motor field magnets 21 are arranged upon the ends of the posts and the parts are secured together by screws 22 arranged through the ends of the arms 20 of the top frame member, through the field magnets and tapped into the ends of the posts.
The top and bottom frame members are provided with suitable bearings 23 and 2% respectively, for the motor shaft 25. The motor shaft is arranged with its lower end extending through the base plate of the bottom frame member, and the fan .16 is mounted thereon, as shown in Fig. IV.
The armature 26 and thecommutator 27. may be of any suitable construction. The commutator is arranged on the motor shaft above the armature.
The commutator brushes28 are arranged in holders 29, the holders being arranged through the cross arms of the top frame member 18. As the details of the brush holders form no part of my present invention, I do not describethe same with further detail herein.
The motor is assembled as a complete motor unit and may be tested before assembling in the complete structure. The fan 16 is mounted on the motor shaft before assembling in the casing. The motor is provided with a casing 30 having an outwardly projecting flange 31 at its lower end. In assembling the supporting ring 32 is arranged on the projecting portion of the base plate, the base plate being shoulderedat 33 to receive the supporting ring. The motor casing 30 is then arranged over the motor with its flange resting upon the supporting ring 32.
The base 17, the supporting ring 32, and the flange 31, are secured together by the screws 3-1. The supportingring is secured to the fan casing by the screws 35. This permits the motor being completely assembled as a unit and it may be assembled in the complete structure by unskilled workmen without danger of disturbing any of the parts.
The motor casing 30 is provided with openings 36 through which the commutator brush holders may be inserted or removed. The. casing 30 is provided with ventilating openings in its upper end, the central opening 37 being positioned above the shaft so that oil may be introduced to the bearing 23 therethrough. An oil conduit 38 is provided for the bearing 24, the motor casing having an opening 39 opposite this conduit.
To adapt the structure for use with hand tools I provide a hose or pipe 41 with a coupling 40. This coupling 40 is provided with a disk-like head 42 having spaced attaching lugs 43 formed thereon.
Coacting spaced attaching lugs 44 are formed 011 the edges of the opening 45 in the top wall, the lugs 6L4- being ofi'set downwardly to receive the lugs 43 between the same and the reinforcing plate 12. The reinforcing plate and the bottom wall of the fan casing is provided with openings 46 registering with the opening 45, but of less diameter than the opening 45. In attaching the hose orpipe 41, the shoe plate 11 is removed andthe pipe coupling -10 engaged by presenting its attaching lugs 43 out of alinement with thelugs 44 and partially rotating the coupling to engage the lugs. The lugs 4-4. are preferably disposed in a slightly spiral positionso thatthe head 4:2 is clamped against the reinforcing plate 12. This coupling may be very quickly engaged or disengaged, which, it will be readily appreciated, is a feature of considerable advantage, and at the same time, it is secure and provides substantially tight joints.
By my improvements, I secure a structure in whichthe motorunit is very simple and economical to produce and at the same time, is very durable. Further, the structure may be assembled completely, as stated, by inexperienced workmen, with little likelihood of disarrangement ofthe parts.
The casing parts may be sheet metal stampings, which notonly adds to the lightnessand compactness of'the structure, but makes possible veryeconomical production.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in detail in a preferred embodiment thereof.
-IVl1ile various modifications are possible and still-retain the advantages of my improvements I have not attempted to illustrate or describe such modifications herein, as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my inven tion relates, to embody the same as conditions or taste may require. I desire, however, to be understood as claiming my improvements specifically in the form illustrated as well as broadly within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. The combination of a driven member casing having an opening in the top through which a driven member may be introduced, a motor frame comprising bottom and top members, the bottom member being a baseplate with posts thereon, the edges of the base plate projecting beyond the posts, the top member being provided with cross arms at each end, the ends of the arms being disposed above the posts, a motor comprising a shaft, a commutator, and field magnets,
cured by screws arranged through the ends said field magnets being arranged on said posts and secured by screws arranged through the ends of the arms of the top frame'member and through said field magnets and tapped into said posts, said shaftbeing disposed in bearings on said'top and bottom frame members and being adapted to, receive a driven member below said bottom frame member base plate, commutator brush holders arranged through said top frame member farms,,a supporting ring embracing said frame posts and resting on and secured to said driven member casing, and a motor casing, having a flange at its lower end resting on said supporting ring, said motor casing flange, supporting ring, and frame base plate being secured together by screws arranged therethrough.
2. The combination of a driven member casing having an opening in the top through which a driven member may beintroduced, a motor frame comprising bottom and top members, the bottom member being a base-plate with posts thereon, the edges of the base plate projecting beyond the posts, the top member being provided with cross arms at each end, the ends of the arms being disposed above the posts, a motor comprlsing av shaft, and field magnets, said field mag nets being arranged on said posts and seof the arms of the top frame member and through said field magnets and tapped into said posts, said shaft being disposed in hearings on said top and bottom frame members andfbeing adapted to receiie driven member below said bottom frame memberbase plate, aisupporting ring embracing said frame posts and resting on and secured to said driven member casing, and a motor casing having a flange at its lower end' resting on said supporting ring,
said motor casing flange, supporting ring, and frame base plate being secured together by screws arranged therethrough.
3. The combination of a driven member casing having an opening through which a driven member may be introduced, a motor frame comprising bottom and top members, the bottom member being a base plate with posts thereon, the top member being provided with cross arms at each end, the ends of the arms being disposed above the posts, said frame being removablymounted on said driven member casing, a motor comprising a shaft, a commutator, and field magnets, saidfield magnets being arranged onsaid posts and secured by screws arranged through the'ends of the arms of the top frame member and through said field magnets and tapped into said posts, said shaft being disposed in bearings in said top and bottom frame members and being adapted to receive a driven member below said bottom frame member base plate, commutator brush holders arranged through said top frame member arms, and a removable motor casing.
4. The combination of a driven member casing having an opening through which a driven member may be introduced, a motor frame comprising bottom and top members, the bottom member being a base plate with posts thereon, the top member being provided with cross arms at each end, the ends of the arms being disposed above the posts, said frame being removably mounted on said driven member casing, a motor comprising a shaft, and field magnets, said field magnets being arranged on said posts and. secured by screws arranged through the ends of the arms of the top frame member and through said field magnets and tapped into said posts, said shaft being disposed in hearings in said top and bottom frame members and being adaptedto receive a driven member below said bottom frame member base plate, and a removable motor casing.
5. Theeombination of a driven member casing having an opening through which a driven member may be introduced, a motor frame comprising bottom and top members, the bottom member being a base plate with posts thereon, the top member being provided with cross arms at each end, the ends of the arms being disposed above the posts, said frame being mounted on said driven member casing, a motor comprising a shaft, a commutator, and field magnets, said field magnets being arranged on said posts and secured by screws arranged through the ends of the arms of the top frame member and through said field magnets and tapped into said posts, said shaft being disposed in bearings in said top and bottom frame members and being adapted to receive a driven member below said bottom frame member base plate, and commutator brush holders arranged through said top frame member arms.
The combination of a driven member easing having an opening through which a driven member may be introduced, a motor frame comprising bottom and top members, the bottom member being a base'plate with posts thereon, the top member being pro vided with cross arms at each end, the ends of the arms being disposed above the posts, said frame being mounted on said driven member casing, and a motor comprising a shaft and field magnets, said field magnets being arranged on said posts and secured by screws arranged through the ends of the casing having an opening through which a driven member may be introduced, a motor frame member comprising a base with posts thereon, the edges of the base projecting beyond the posts, a motor comprising a shaft and field magnets, said field magnets being mounted on said posts, said shaft being disposed through said base and being adapted to receive a driven member on-its projecting end, a supporting ring embracing said frame posts and secured to said driven member casing, and a motor casing having a flange atits inner end, said motor casing flange, supporting ring, and base being secured together by screws a rranged. therethrough.
8. The combination of a driven member casing having an inturned flange at theupper edge thereof and provided with an opening in the top through which the driven member may be introduced,"a motor unit comprising a base plate supporting the-motor and having a bearing for the motor shaft, a driven member secured on the motor shaft below the base plate, said base plate being supported by the inturned fiange of said driven member casing whereby the driven member is supported within said casing.
9. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a motor frame comprising top and bottom members, the bottom member being a base plate with posts thereon, the edges of the base plate projecting beyond the post, the top member being provided with cross arms at each end, the ends of the arms being disposed above the posts, a motor comprising a shaft, commutator, and field magnets, said field magnets being arranged on said posts and secured by screws arranged through the ends of the arms of the top member and said field magnets and tapped into the ends of said posts, said shaft being disposed in bearings on said top and bottom frame members, commutator brush holders arranged through said top frame member arms, and a motor casing having a flange at its lower end embracing said posts and removably secured to said base plate by screws arranged through the casing flange and the projecting edge of the base plate.
10. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a motor frame comprising top and bottom members, the bottom member being a base plate with posts thereon, the edges of the base plate projecting besaid posts and removably secured to saidbase plate by screws arranged through the casing flange and the projecting edge of the base plate.

In a structure of the class described, the combination of a motor frame comprising a base plate provided with upstanding posts, field magnets supported on the upper ends of said posts, a top frame member having supporting legs resting on said field magnets in line with said posts and secured by screws arranged through said legs and said field magnets and extending into the upper ends of said posts, a motor armature, a motor shaft journaled at its ends in said top frame member and said base plate respectively, a commutator, commutator brush holders carried by said top frame member, and a motor casing surrounding said motor and said motor frame and secured at its lower end to said base plate.
12. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a motor frame comprising a base plate provided with upstanding posts, field magnets supported on the upper ends of said posts, a top frame member having supporting legs resting on said field magnets in line with said posts and secured by screws arranged through said legs and said field magnets and extending into the upper ends of said posts, a motor armature, a motor shaft journaled at its ends in said top frame member and said base plate respectively, a commutator, and commutator brush holders.
