Having set forth the details of the invention, the following mode of operation and cotiperation of the several parts will be readily understood: Referring now to the threadlooper 52 and its actuating mechanism as when occupying the positions illustrated 1n Figs. 1, 2 and 3', and in side elevation and plan views a; and Z2 respectively, of Fig. 4,
with the needle 55 at nearly its limit of upward stroke as shown in said figures and views, the initial action of the heart camgroove 32 on the crank-arm 30 acts to rock the free end of the looper 52 toward the needle and simultaneously with .said rockingmovement the eccentric cam 36, through the connections previously pointed out, moves the finger 53 laterally across the line of needle actuation and in contact with the needle-thread 56, as'shown in side elevation and plan views 0 and d respectively, of Fig.4. During the time that the cam-follower 31 is tracking the cam-groove 32 from the point illustrated, best shown in Fig. 3, to substantially the point 57, the eccentric cam acts to give to the looper its reverse lateral movement to position the free end of the looper as shown in views a and f, of Fig,
4, thus carrying the needle-thread over the edge of the fabric, see Fig. 6, and into the groove 54, as shown in Fig. 5 and in views 6 and 7, with the needle entering the needlethread looper loop 58, when the tracking of the cam-groove by its follower from the point 57 tothe point 59, or point of reverse action of said cam-groove, the free end of the looper is rocked away from the line of needle actuation so that in its'return movement from below the thread-plate the heelportion 60 of the looper will pass clear of the needle, as illustrated in side elevation and plan views 9 and it respectively, of Fig.
4. During the time that the follower is returning to its illustrated position the looper is rocked to its limit of upward movement, the eccentric cam in the meantime acting vto return the looper to its illustrated position, best-shown in views a'and'b. It being understood that the needle effects the usual thread-loopwhich is entered by the receivcatenating the latter with the needle-thread substantially as is illustrated in Fig. 6.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what I claim herein is 1. In an overseaming sewing machine, the combination with a stitch-forming and cleth-feeding mechanism including a throatplate, a needle provided with, an upper thread and a loop-taker provided with a mass of under thread, of a needle-thread looper actuated to deliver said upper thread in the form of a loop over the free edge of the fabric being acted on and present said loop beneath said fabric to-be entered by said needle and concatenated with said under thread, said actuating means including a cam member having one complete actuation to a like actuation-of the needle for giving to said-looper rocking movements, and a cam-member having two complete actuations to one of said needle to give to said looper oppositely directed lateral movements at the upper, and at the'under side of said throat-plate. 7

In an overseaming sewing machine, the combination with a stitch-forming and cloth-feeding mechanism including a throatplate, a needle carrying an upper thread and a loop-taker provided with a mass of under thread, of a needle-thread looper actuated to deliver said upper thread in the form of a loop over the edge of the fabric and present said loop beneathsaid throat-plate to be entered by said needle and concatenated with said under thread, said actuating means including a cam-member for giving to said loopersubstantially uniform rocking movements and a cam-member for giving to said looper accelerated and retarded lateral movements, in the formation of a given stitch. 3. In an overseaming sewing machine, the combination with a stitch-forming and cloth-feeding mechanism. including a rockshaft, a bell-crank lever, a throat-plate, a
needle provided with an upper thread and a loop-taker provided with a mass of under thread, of a needle-thread looper actuated to deliver said upper thread in the form of a loop overthe free edge of the fabric being acted on and present said loop beneath said fabric to be entered by said needle and concatenated with said under thread, said actuating means including a heart-shaped cammember 'operatively connectedv with said looper through said rock-shaft, and an eccentric cam-member operatively connected with said looper through the bell-crank lever, said rock-shaft and bell-crank lever acting to transmit to said looper rocking and lateral movements, respectively.
4. In an overseaming sewing machine, the combination with a stitch-forming and cloth-feeding mechanism including a rockshaft provided with a looper carrying bracket, a bell-crank lever, a throat-plate, a
needle provided withan upper thread and a loop-taker provided with a mass of under thread, of a needle-thread looper actuated to deliver said upper thread in the form of a loop over the free edge of the fabric being acted on and present saidloop beneath said fabric to be entered by saidneedle and concatenated with said under thread, said actuating means including a heart-shaped cammember operatively connected with said looper through said rock-shaft and looper carrying bracket, and an eccentric cam member operatively connected with said V looper through the bell-crank lever, said 15 name to this specification, in the presence I of two subscribing witnesses.
