iVith this object in view my invention consists in constructing" the apparatus that in normal operation the fluid flows along; a most simple path and through passages or substantially constant width.
For the purpose of explaining the invention an example embodying the same has becnshown in the accompanying drawing, in which the same letters of reference have been used in all the views to indicate corresponding parts.

In the example shown in the drawing the power transmitting apparatus consists of a set of pressure pumps A and A and a set of motors 13 located with its axis'parallel to the axis of the pumps. The pumps and motor are of the rotary type and the rotary drums thereof which carry the pistons or blades are rotatably mounted within b ushingsll', H, and 1 respectively which are C. The set fitted in bores made in of pumps is secured to sh ship, apparatus of this class such tt D, for eX- ample the shaft of a turbine, and the set of motors is secured to a shaft F, for example the propeller shaft of a ship. If desired the said shafts are independently mounted and connected respectively with the driving I engine and the driven member by a suitable coupling.
In the example shown in the drawing the set of pumps consists of two single acting pressure pumps A and A, and the size and effect of the pump A-is the double of that of the pump A, so that by throwing either one of the pumps or both or" them into operation the driven member is drive 1 at three difierent speeds. As shown the sit of motors consists of a single member B. motor as well as the pumps are of the rotary types, and they comprise rotary drums each carrying radially reciprocating blades or pistons and lateral cams and guide-rollers for imparting reciprocating movement to the pistons. v
Between the set of pumps A and A and the set of motors B controlling members or valves K and L are provided the axes of which are likewise disposed parallel to the' axes of the pumps and motor. As shown the valves are in the form of cock valves and their lengths are equal to the lengths of the drums of the pressure pumps and motors. The cock valve K is the regulating valve. The cock valve L is used in conjunction with the valve K for reversing the direction of the flow of the fluid to the motor and'the direction of rotation of the motor.
In the position of the valves K and L' through the open reversing cock valve L, a
chamber Q and a port 71, to the pump. The valve K also controls the connection of a chamber M with the passage N and with a circumferential by-passage Q, leading to the The suction chamber Q, The valve L also controls the connection of said chamber M with the motor passage 1 and the suction chamber Q. The passages N, .P, which connect the motor with the pump, are of substantially constant width, and the ports or ways of the valves K, L, as well as the chambers M, Q, and the by-passage Q, are of a width equal, or nearly equal, to that of said passages N, P.
By turning the cock valve K in a clockwise direction the passage of the fluid to the pressure passage N can be throttled and the lay-passage Q leading to the suction chamber Q, opened, so that only a part of the driving fluid is supplied to the motor B, the remainder being. directly returned to the pump. Thereby the speed of the motor can be reduced as desired. In order that the valve K may assume a position such as just described, in which the chamber M and the passages N and Q. are all three open to the valve port or valve way at the same time, the arc of the solid portion of the valve must be greater than the land between the ports communicating with the passages N and Q, yet smaller than the aggregate width of said ports and of the land between them, so that the valve may take a position in .which both of said ports are throttled while the third port (leading to M, h) is fully open. By turning the cock valve K so far that the pressure passage N is entirely closed and the by-passage Q entirely open, the Whole current of the fluid is directly returned'to the suction side of the pump without flowing through the motor, so that the speed of the motor is Zero. Finally by setting the'valves K and L in the positions shown in dotted lines the power medium can be made to act on the motor 13 in the opposite direction. In this case the pressure fluid flows through the port it and the chamber M into the passage P which before was the suction passage and which now is the pressure passage, so that the-fluid acts on the pistons of the motor in the opposite sense, whereupon it flows through the passage N and the by-passage Q to the pump. Thereby the motor rotates in the re verse direction.
From the (lescription of the operation of the apparatus it will readily be understood, that in the normal operation, that is when the motor is running in forward direction,

The combination of a rotary pump having suction and delivery ports, two passages each adapted to serve either as a sac tion passage or as a delivery passage, two connections leading from each of said passages, one to the suction port of the pump and the other to the delivery port thereof, and valves controlling said connections, one of said valves having its rotary solid portion greater circumferentially than ,the land between the respective passage and the connection to the suction port, yet smaller; than the aggregate width of said passage and connection and of the land between them, whereby said valve may be turned into a position in which it throttles said passage as well as said suction connection I while leaving the corresponding delivery connection fully open.
