Be it known that l, ALFRED Parnu, a citi zen of the Swiss Republic, residing at Berlin, German, have .invented certain new and useful Improvementslin Centrifugal Throwing-Pumps, 'of which the following is a specification. r.This invention relates to centrifugal throwing pumps and more particularly to such pumps for use in drawing oil and compressing gases or vapors.
One obgect of the invention is to construct a pump of this type which will create a strong suction and which will operate in an improved and eiicient manner.
Further objects of the invention, as wel-l as wherein l have described my invention.
ln the accompanying drawing wherein .I have illustrated one form whichmy invention may taire, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the improved pump; Fig. 2 is a development on line A-A, Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a face view of the impeller looking from left to right in Fig. 1. Y
Referring to the drawing l is the casing Voi." the pump within which rotates the impeller 2 mounted on the shaft 3. The shaft may be driven in any suitable manner. rlhe casing is shown as made up of two sections, a main or body section 4 'and a front removable section 5. The body section of the casing is 'provided with a projecting portion 6 betweenwhich and the hub 7 of -the impeller is arranged a water tight packing 8. This body I"section 4 is constructed to provide a narrow relatively deep annular discharge chamber 9 for water and gasessurrounding Athe ixiipeller 2. The front section of the casing i provided with a central inlet or suction opening 10 for water, surrounding A which is the annular chamber 1l separated .Y therefrom by wall 12. IThe chamber 11, which may be termed the vacuum or suction vapor chamber, communicates with the vapor inlet conduit 13. This front section is further provided with an annular groove 14 around the face adjacent-the iinpeller, coinmunicating with which are spaced directing nozzles 14 also formed in the front section. The spaces 11` between these nozzles 14 communicate with the vacuum chamber 11, The irnpeller 2 is constructed with suit-k ably curved varies forming two sets ofl pas sages 15 and 16 arranged serially as regards the iow of liquid, the passages 15 connecting the central inlet opening 10 with one end of the nozzles 14 and the passages 1G.V connecting theother end of nozzles la with the annulaichamber 9. The passages 0r vane spaces 15 are designedto impart considerable veloci ty to the liquid or throwing water, after which the water Hows through the stationary nozzles 14. 1t is `after leaving these nozzles that the throwing water acts on the air or gas that is to be compressed. The vane spaces 15 all receive their supply of water from the common supply chamber or opening 10 and deliver it through ports 15 in the side wall or face of the impeller, as shown in Fig. 3. As shown, there are three of these passages and ports, but the number can be changed if desired. Bee tween theimpeller and the casing are suitable paclrings, labyrinth paclrings being shown, the leakage through the right hand paclring being drained oli through passage 17. While in the present instance these nozzles 14* are shownas being stationary and arranged in the front section 5, it will be understood that I am not limited to this arrangement as these nozzles might be arranged in other ways, as for example, in the form of a wheely adapted to revolve either in the same direction as, or in the opposite directionto the impeller, as found desirable.
The operation is as follows.: Assuming, by way oir' example, that the'pump is being used in connection with a' condenser for drawing od the air and uncondensed gases therefrom,
14, which nozzles 14 direct the water inward toward the axis of the inipeller and discharge it laterally into 'the vane spaces 16. As the venes forming the. passages 16 of the impeller move successively past the Kends of nozzles 14"they will, in a wa v, chop oli' pellets or slugs of water, whic slugs will be directed by such venes into the chainlier 9. Those portions of the vane spaces 1G which are not :it :my imrticuhir instant in communication with the nozzles il' nre in connniinicnti `i withv the spaces il', and :is the outward movement of the successive pellets or slugs of water creates n suction, nir und gases from the spaces und chamber 11 cinnnninicnting; with the condenser are entrnppeii o ltween, compressed by und carried along between the successive slugs and. thrown into the chamber l The chamber il he; :i suitable discharge eoniluit 2), shown in dotted lines, connected therewith for draining :muy he water,k nir and gases tli'rfown therein from the impeilerE '"'By the above described arrangement,
l lirstinipnrt to the winter or other lniii used n high-"initial velocity before the seme is fed, in the'forni of sings, to the vaines through which the fases or vapors are drawn oli.
'In uicorilnnee ivitli the provisions of the patent statuti" l hnve described the prin ciplo oi opere n oi mv invention, together `with the eppoi-nim which l now consider to represeni the, liest enilioilinient thereof; but l iiesire to have it unilerstooil that the zipparatne shown is only illustrative, ond that the invention, can be, cnrrieil ont hy other ineens. YJhnt .l ehiini ne new nini desire to secure liv Letters Patent oi the United States, is
i.- A. eont'ritiigel throwing pump having :i vapor suction chamber, en iinpeller proviiiecl with e plurality of sets of venes through which the liquiii is successively fed, and
ineens 'for feeding the liquid roln one of ,seid sets to another inthe forni of sings or pellet-s, said means comprising n plurality of spaced nozzles, the passages between which ere in communication 'with vapor suction clinmber.
centrifugal throwing pump havin a vapors-notion chamber, en iinpeiler provi ed with wo'sets ci venes through which the liqliifl is sncceseivelf,-v eil, and ineens for feeding the liqnii'i from the first set to the Asecond set in the forni. oi? slugs or pellets, said, means comprising it plurality of spaced nogzles, theA iimsszxges'hetween which are in coniiriniikicntion with the vapor suction chaine bef- J I 3. A centrifugal throwing pump having n.
voiler suction chamber, :in iinpeller provided witn tvo` sets of venes through which the;
liquid is successively fed, und spaced pash sages for directing the liquid from the firs Lieeoo set to the second set, the spaces between seid passages communicating with said suction chamber.
-i-. A centrifugal throwing pump having :in inlet opening :for connection to the supply of ect-ive hud, n secondr inlet opening for connection with the chamber from which fluid is to he' drawn, an inipeller having two sets of Yzines, one set being 1n communication with the first inlet opening to receive active luid therethrough, and the second set being in communication with the second inlet opening, and means for directing the active fluid from the first set of venes to the second set.
5, A centrifugal throwing pump having a centrally located inlet opening for connection to 'the supply of active fluid, a vapor suction chamber surrounding said opening, ii second inlet opening leading to the vapor suction chamber, an iinpelier having two sets o' venes, one set being in communication with the first named inlet opening, and the second set being in,communication with the vapor suction chiunber, and spaced` directing nozzles having their inletends alined With the discharge ends of the irst set of venes, ind their outlet ends alined with the inlet ends of the second set of venes whereby Such nozzles act to direct the active Huid from the first. set to the secon' set oi' venes.
6. A centrifugal throwing pump comprising n casing heving en inlet foi-fthe throwing water, an inlet for the gais to be com pressed, an outlet for the 'throwing Water and compressed gus, nn impeller in the casing having sets of venes with passages l e. tween, one set of which nots on the throwing water only, the otherwon the throwing water t and goe, nv driving shaft for the inipeller,
from one set noziiles which receive the water of vane passages und after directing it inivnrd toward the exis deliver the seme into the second.4 set of vene passages, and means for conve Tin Y @es rom seid es inlet to e region where it will lie eetefiiipon by the water as ,it leavesthe nozzles and enters the i second set of vene passages. f
