i Specification of Letters Patent No. 1,563, dated August 22, 1854.

To all whom t may concern j Be it known that I, C. M. ALBURGER, of the city of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the PavementNVasher and Hose-Hydrant; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being `had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, `in which i Figure 1 isa perspective view; Fig. 2 a longitudinal section through the middle; and Fig. 3, an enlarged longitudinal section,

when the plug (c) is turned accordingly, so that the through way (71,) therein eX- tendsacross the water way (i, 2,) of the cock.

7c is a cover or lid adapted to `cover the circular depression or cavity `(Z,)which is left in the case for the square or key end of the key-rod which projects up within the cavity.

m, is a weight attached by a chain (10,) or its equivalent, to the lid (lc) above, the chain being made to pass freely through a hole in the bottomof the cavity (Z,) so that the lid may be raised-up when required 0r drawn down and held in its place over the cavity by means of the weight. The key rod (C) is divided at the lower end and its o-ver and is secured to the plug in the usual manner, its upper end passing loosely through a round hole in the bottom of the cavity (Z,). The lower end, or boxed part of thecase (A) iis made sufficiently capacious to admit and adjust the double waste cock, with the pipes and operating rod, and is about two feet long*and to.` facilitate adjustment, one side is cast open and `fitted with a loose cover (o) the bottom (p) is also open. The upper part ofthe case is made about three feetlong, and so as to answer the double pur-l pose of a horse bitching-post and hose hydrant, having a gooseineck or other downward projection at the upper end, so that the water running from the pipe (a) therein, may be directed down upon the `curb sto-ne, or into a receiving vessel, or may have a hose attached at the threaded end (d,). The o-utlet pipe is made a little shorter at this end than the goose neck, so as not to be seen from the outside, thesand core being removed for a short distance above the thread, and a small quantity of melted lead,

or its equivalent, run around to fix firmly the end of the pipe, and also prevent the re-` maining sand above, from falling out, and allow room for screwing on the hose. The box part of the case is sunk in the ground near the curb stone of a street as shown by the dotted lines m, y, z) and the part forming the permanent hose hydrant and hitehing post, projecting perpendicularly upward.

The lnode of operation of my invention is simploand convenient. Being placed in the `pavement as above described, and the pipe (a2) in permanent connection with the supply pipe, the lid (k) is raised (by hand) and, by means of the common key applied over the projecting end of the key rod (o), the plug (c) of the cock is turned so that the through way (It) affords a passage for the water, which now passes up through the pipe (a) and out at (fZ,)-and when the plug is again turned (bringing the through way (7L) across the water way of the c0ck,) a communication is furnished through one 'of the waste ways (if, f7) to the outlet waste hole (g) and through `which the water remaining in the pipe (a) wastes or runs out and soaks away in the ground through the open bottom of the case. In the usual mode ofwasting this water but one waste (f) is made in t-he plug, and asmall pin fixed in `the side of the plug so as to prevent the plug being` turned more than one fourth round in the barrel, and the `objection to the said mode consists in it-s great liability to derangement by the pin breaking,| and thus allowing the plug to be turned in the wrong direction, leaving the water in the pipe (a) which in cold weather freezes and bursts able, not liable to get out of order, and besides aords a permanent and convenient hitching post for horses, ata much less cost than t-he two separate devices for these purposes.

Having thus described the construction and mode of operation of my invention, I proceed to state that I do not claim a pavement Washer and hose hydrant independent of any peculiarities in their construction and combination, but

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, are

l. I claim making a double Waste cock by cutting the tivo 'Waste notches (f, f) or their equivalents, in the plug (c) of the cock, so that either notch maybe put in communication with the usual Waste hole (g) in the barrel, by turning the plug in either direction, substantially and for thepurpose as described-When the said double Waste cock is used in combination With a pavement Washer, hose hydrant, or other hydraulic apparatus requiring the Water in the outlet pipe above to Waste in the ground below, Y

when thereservoir pressure is shut o by turning the plug of the cock.

2. I claim the general arrangement and combination of a pavement Washer, hose hydrant, and bitching post, substantially and for the purposes as described.
