To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat 1, ERNEST HAUsBERe, a citizen of the United States, residing at Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Electric Type-Writer, of whlch the following is a specification.
The objects of my invention are to provide a typewriter that may be operated at high speed, and having a light touch, and also to provide means whereby any pressure upon a key whether light or heavy will operate the corresponding type bar to print 11111- formly.
A further object is to provide a typewriter of .the class in which the type bars are operated electrically so arranged that the device may be assembled in a compact manner to occu y a minimum of space.
A further ob ect is to provide a machine of this kind having a selective magnet for each key and an independent magnet for operating the universal bar operating device, said magnets being so arranged as to be operated by power from a single source of supply such, for instance, as that furnished in an ordinary electric lamp circuit.
A further object is to provide simple and inexpensive means for operatively connecting the various armatures of the selective magnets with the universal operating bar whereby the hooks carried by the various magnets may be made to engage with the universal bar and to disengage therefrom with a minimum of friction and without danger of having said hooks held in frictional engagement with the universal bar.
A further object is to provide a typewriting machine with automatic actuating devices whereby when a circuit is established through any of the selective magnets, the contact devices that control the magnet that operates the universal bar will be held in contact with each other until the printing stroke has been completed so that the operator need not hold the key depressed until the completion of the type bar stroke.
My invention consists in certain details, in the construction, arrangement and combination-of the various parts of the device,
' whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth,
pointed out in my claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a vertical, central, sectional view of a typewriter embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows a top or plan view of same with the carriage removed and parts of theoperating mechanism broken away to illustrate the details of the construction. Fig. 3 shows a diagram illustratin the electrical features involved in my invention. Fig.- 4 shows anenlarged detail view illustrating the means for automatically latching and releasing the circuit closing device of the magnet that operates the universal bar. Fig. 5 shows an enlarged detail side view illustrating the means .for operating the end of the rock shaft of the circuit closing arm for the type bar operating magnet, and Fig. 6 shows an enlarged, detail side view of part of the universaL bar, to illustrate the means for returning said bar to a normal position and for limiting its movement.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, I have used the reference numeral 10 to indicate the frame of the machine and 11 a sliding carriage thereon containing a printing platen 12.
At the front of the machine is a set of key bars 13 slidingly mounted for vertical movement and provided with insulating tips 14 at their lower ends. Each of said key bars has its insulating tip 14'resting upon a spring 15 which spring is fixed to an insulated cross bar 16 and extends under the insulating tip 14. All of said springs 15 normally stand in position slightly elevated above the cross rods 17, which rods are attached at their ends to the bars 18, and said bars are connected with an electrical conducting wire 19, said bars 18 being insulated from the side of the frame by the insulating blocks 20 as shown in Fig. 2. Each of the springs 15 is electrically connected with a conductor wire 21 and the arrangement of the key bars is such that when any one of them is depressed'even to the slightest extent, the spring 15 will enga e the adjacent rod 17 and thus establish a circuit from the conductor wire 19 to the conductor wire 21 that is connected with the spring 15 of the depressed key. By this arrangement it is obvious that the up and down movement of the key bar may be comparatlvely sllght, and all of the pressure that need be overcome 1n depressing the keybar is that sufficient to perform any function of moving the type bars. Therefore each of said magnets 22 may be made comparatively small and I have arranged them to occupy a minimum of space by placing them in two parallel rows transversely of the machine frame, the magnets in one row being arranged in staggered positions with relation to those in the other row as shown in Fig. 2.

These armatures are pivoted to the rods 24 which extend transversely of the machine frame, and said armatures extend in directions opposite from each other over their respective magnets as "shown in Fig. 1. Attached to the outer end of each armature is an open link 25 and said link is arranged to receive a short arm 26 formed on a lever 27. This lever is pivoted to a rod 28 extended across the machine frame. The end of-the arm 27 opposite from its pivotal point is pivoted to an upwardly projecting arm 29 having a hook 30 at its'upper end. A flat spring 31 is fixed to each of the arms 27 and is arranged to engage a cross rod 32 to yieldingly hold the free end of the arm 27 in an elevated position. The arrangement of these parts is such that when the armature is attracted to its magnet the hook 30 will be moved downwardly and when the ar'matureis released from its magnet the spring 31 will return the hook 30 to its elevated position. By
means of the link 25 I have provided a con-.
nection by means of which the armature may be elevated by its spring 33 independent of the upward movement of the arm 27, for purposes hereinafter made clear. I have also provided means whereby a downward movement of any one of the armatures 23 will operate to close a circuit through a magnet for operating the printing mechanism as follows: Pivoted to the rods 24 at the opposite sides of the machine frame are two arms 34 extended in opposite directions. Attached to the outer ends of each pair of said arms 34 is a rod 35 which rod lies directly under the free ends ofthe armamesses electric contact plate 41 and attached to the said plate is a conductor wire 42. Below the contact plate 41 is a stationary contact plate 43, to which the conductor wire 44 is connected. By this arrangement it is obvious that when any armature 23 is moved downwardly in one of the rows, the arm 34 that is provided for said row will be moved. downwardly until the plates 41 and 43 form an electrical contact and when the current through the selective magnet is broken, the
spring 39 will cause the arm 34 to return to its normal position and break the contact between the plates 41 and 43. In order that both ends of the rod 35 may move in unison,
that carries the contact plate and in this 1 connection it is to be understood that there is an arm 37 and a set of contact plates provided for the row of magnets 22 at the rear, the same as for the front row of magnets It is important that the contact plates 41 and 43 be held in engagement with each other until the type bar has been actuated. for printing, otherwise if the contact plate 41 should break contact prior to the completion of the printing stroke, the device would not operate effectively.
In order to avoid the necessity for retaining the fingers upon the key bars and to insure the completion of the type bar stroke each time that a key bar is depressed, I have provided the following device: Arranged between the adjacent ends of the arms 37 are two fiat springs 49 having inclined faces 50 at the upper ends with shoulders 51. At an intermediate point of each of 'said fiat springs is a lever 52 fulcrumed at 53 and provided with an-upwardly projecting arm 54 which arm is connected to a rod 55 having a lug 56 thereon. A guide rib 57 isprovided for slidingly supporting the rod 53. The arrangement of these parts is such that when the arm 54 is in position as shown in Fig. 4, and the arm 37 is depressed, then it will engage the inclined face 50 and force the upper end of the spring 49 rearwardly the elfect of moving the upper ends of the springs 49 toward each other to release the arms37 from their shoulders 51.
The mechanism for actuating the type bars comprises an electromagnet 58. An armature 59 is provided for said magnet and is supported by hanger arms 60 at its ends. Connected with each end of the armature 59 is a rod 61 which rod is operatively connected to the universal operating bar. This operating bar comprises two upwardly extended arms 62 pivoted at their lower ends to the sides of the machine frame and extended upwardly, and having a bar proper 63 attached to their upper ends. This bar extends across the machine and .normally stands in position under the hooks 30 as clearly shown in Fig. 1. Que of said arms .62 is arranged in position adjacent to the lug 56, the object being to provide means whereby, when said arm 62 is moved rear wardly, it will strike the lug 56 when at t e rear limit of its movement and thus cause the springs 49 to release the arms 37. In .order to provide for yieldingly holding this universal bar 63 at its forward limit of movement in position where it will be directly under the hooks 30, I have attached thereto a spring 7 0 and I have also provided a limiting stop 71 to be engaged by the bar when at its forward limit of movement. This spring also serves the function of normally holding the armature 59 away from its magnet 58.
' l have previously explained the means for lowering any particular one of the hooks 30 by pressing upon the correspond- .ing key bar, and also the means whereby a circuit is completed through the conductor wire 44 when any one of said hooks is lowered. The completion, of this circuit obviously magnetizes the electromagnet 58 and attracts the armature 59, and this will have the efi'ect of moving the universal operating bar rearwardly; in this way the selected.

Pivoted to the upper end of each lever 64 is a short link 66 which in turn is pivoted to a lug 67 on a type bar 68 which latter is fulcrumed at 69 so that the type thereon will strike against the platen 12. By this construction it is obvious that when the uni versal operating bar is moved rearwardly at the time any of the hooks 30 is at its downward limit, the corresponding type bar will be moved to printing position, and at the time when the bar 63 is at its rearward limit, the locking device for the circuit closing device will be released.
Referring to the diagram of the electrical parts of the device illustrated in Fig. 3, I have used the reference numeral 72 to indicate a dynamo or other source of electrical supply. In the conductor wire 73 leading from thecdynamo is a resistance 74 and a conductor wire 75 is connected with the conductor wire 73 beyond the resistance 74 and leads to the conductor wires 42 which are designed for establishing the circuit through the large magnet 58. After passing through said magnet the current returns by means of the conductor wire 7 6. The circuit for the selective'magnets is connected with the conductor wire 73 beyond the resistance 74 by means of the conductor wire 77 and in this circuit is a second resistance 78 to which the conductor wire 19 is connected. The conductor wires 21 lead to the selective magnets and the conductor wires 79 lead from the selective magnets and return through the conductor wire 80 with which they are electrically connected. By this arrangement it is obvious that by means of an electric current taken from a source of supply, an independent circuit may be provided for operating both the selective magnets and the printing magnet as the various resistance devices applied to the different circuits' are so arranged that the voltage of the current as applied to the selective magnets is reduced to such an extent as to pro: vide a current sufficient for the purpose of the smaller selective magnets while, at the same time, providing a sufficient current of higher voltage for the purpose of operating the printing magnet.
In practical operation the operator depresses oneoof the key bars. The pressure he applies may be either light or heavy and the key bar need only be depressed far enough to bring. the spring 15 against the rod 17. In this way an electric circuit is established through the proper selective magnet which results in attracting the armature 23. This moves the lever 27 downwardly and also the hook 30. At the sametime it moves the arm 37 downwardly and establishes a circuit through the universal magnet. Obviously the selective magnets can be comparatively'small for the reason that the only function they perform is to move the hooks 30 and the arms 37 downwardly which may both be done without overcoming any material amount of friction orresistance. lhe contact made by the operator upon the key bar need not be continued longer than is necessary to establish a circuit through the selective magnet for the reason that the plates 41' and 43 are locked in contact by means of the springs 49. When a circuit is established through the universal magnet its armature is attracted and the universal operating bar 63 is moved rearwardly and carries with it the selective type bar. Inasmuch as the same magnet is used for operating all of the type bars, it is obvious that each will strike upon the platen with the same amount of force so that the printing will be uniform in character. During the completion of the rearward movement of the universal bar 63, the locking device for the circuit closing device is released, so that the circuit of the universal magnet is broken when the type bar is released, and as soon as the circuit is broken the universal bar 63'is returned to a normal position by means of the spring 70. During the operation of the device the type bar is held in printing position until the key bar is released, and as soon as the key bar is released after the completion of the printing stroke the circuit is broken and the universal bar is returned and at the same-time the hook is released from it. In this connection I have provided for insuring the release of the hooks 30 from the universal bars 63 upon the release of the key bar as follows: The connection between the armatures 23' andthe levers 27 is by means of l -a link 25 which permits the armature 23 to move upwardly while the lever 27 is sta-' tionary.' If the said connection between the lever 27and armature 23 were rigid, then so long as the hook 30 is held down to the 'bar 63, the lever 27 would also be held down,
which would result in holding down the rod 35 and with it the arm 37 so that the circuit would he maintained through the universal magnet, but by having the sliding connection by means of a link 25 the armature 23 may iove upwardly and break the circuit thus releasing the universal bar and permitting the lever 27 to be moved upwardly by its spring.
It is obvious that the arrangement of the selective magnets and other parts of the device is such that the entire machine may be made in compact form to occupy'a minimum of space. Another advantage gained by my I improved construction is that ii am enabled to employ type bars of the class now commonly used on visible type writers and to operate these type bars by means of selective magnets arranged in a straight row across themachine and also to so arrange the parts that the armatures of the selective magnets are moved directly toward and from the selective magnets and do not have any rubbing or friction between them and the selective magnets when the power magnet is being operated. i

In a device of the class described,-the combination of key bars, type bars, a selective electromagnet for each key bar, means for establishing an electric circuit through the corresponding electromagnet upon a depression of a key bar, a selective armature for each electromagnet, a circuit closing device operatively connected with each selective armature, a type bar operating electromagnet, means for establishing an electric circuit through it when any one of said closing device is operated, an armature for said magnet, a universal bar operatively connected with the said armature, and means interposed between the selective armatures and the type' bars for operatively connecting a type'bar to the universal bar when the corresponding selective armature is operated, and means for locking said circuit closing device for a limited time in closed position. 1 r a 4 3. 4. In a device of the class described, a
- key bar, a selective electromagnet, means actuated by the key bar for establishing an electric circuit through the selective magnet, a selective armature for the magnet, a circuit closing device operatively connected with the selective" armature, a type bar, a type bar operating electromagnet, means for establishing an electric circuit through it by means of said circuit closing device, a type bar operating armature for said magnet, and means operatedby the type bar operating armature for actuating the type bar when the said armature is attracted to its magnet, and means for automatically locking the said circuit closing device for a limited time in closed position.
5. In a device of the class described, a key bar, a selective electromagnet, means actuated by the key bar for establishing an electric circuit through the selective magnet, a selective armature for the magnet, a circuit closing device operatively connected with the selective armature, a type bar, a type bar operating electromagnet, means for establishing an electric circuit through it by means of said circuit closing device, a type bar operating armature for said magnet, and means operated by the type bar operating armature for actuating the type bar when the said armature is attracted to its magnet, and means for automatically locking the said circuit closing device 111 closed position, and means for automatically releasing said locking device, at the end of the type bar stroke.

A device of the class described, comprising a series of key bars, a selective electromagnet for each key bar, means for establishing an electric circuit through one of said electromagnets upon a depression of the corresponding key bar, a selective armature for each selective electromagnet, a circuit closing device arranged to be operated when any of said armatures is attracted to its magnet, a universal magnet, an armature therefor, a universal bar operatively connected with said armature, means operated by the said circuit closing device for establishing an electric circuit through the universal magnet, a hook for-each selective armature operatively connected therewith to be moved into operative relation to the universalbar when the selective armature is moved toward its magnet, and a type bar for each of said hooks operatively connected therewith, the connection between each selective armature and its hook including means for permitting the armature to move away from its magnet during the time that the hook remains in engagement with the universal bar to thereby permit the circuit closing device to open, and a spring for normally holding the circuit closing device in open position.

A device of the class described, comprising a series of key bars, a selective electromagnet for each key bar, means for establishing an electric circuit through each magnet upon a depression of the corresponding key bar, a spring controlled armature for each selective magnet, a spring controlled lever for each of said armatures, means for providing a limited sliding connection between each of said armatures and its lever, a hook connected with each lever, a type bar operatively connected with each book, a circuit closing device, a spring for normally holding same in open position, means actuated by any one of said selective armatures for closing said circuit closing device, a universal magnet, means operated by the circuit closing device for establishing a current of electricity through the universal magnet, an armature for-the universal magnet, a universal bar operatively connected with said armature and disposed adjacent to said hooks, the parts being so arranged that when any selechve armature is operated the corresponding hook will engage the universal bar and then the universal armature when attracted to its magnet will operate the universal bar and said hook to actuate the corresponding type bar, a-spring actuated latch device for normally holding the circuit closing device in its closed position and means operated by said universal bar for releasing said latch device.

In an electrically operated typewriter, the combination of keys, type bar devices, a series of selective magnets, means for energizing them upon a depression of the keys, means operated by a selective magnet for placing the type bar" device in position to be operated, a universal magnet for moving the type bar devices from operative position to printing position, and means operated by the selective magnet for energizing the universal magnet.
21. In an electrically operated typewriter, the combination of a series of type bars pivotally supported and capable of striking at a common center, an operating device for each type bar comprising a pivoted arm operatively connected with the type bar, a hook supported for longitudinal and pivotal movement, means for connecting the hook With said arm, keys, means operated upon the depression of a key for moving the corresponding hook longitudinally, a universal magnet, a universal bar operatively connected with the magnet and designed to be engaged by said hook to thereby move said hook on its pivot in the direction required for imparting a striking movement to the corresponding type bar.
22. In an electrically operated typewriter, the combination of a series oftype bars pivotally supported and capable ofstriking at a common center, an operating device for each type bar, comprising a pivoted arm operatively connected with the type bar, a hook supported for longitudinal and pivotal movement, means for connecting the hook with said arm, keys, a circuit closer for each key, a selective magnet for each circuit closer, an armature for each selective magnet, means for connecting each armature with said hook arranged to move the hook longitudinally upon the movement of the armature toward the magnet, a universal magnet, a universal bar operatively connected with the universal magnet and designed to be engaged by said hook to thereby move said hook on its pivot in the direction required for imparting a striking movement to the corresponding type bar.
23. In an electrical typewriter, the combination'of a series of type bars, the pivotal supports of which are arranged on a line extended transversely of the machine and curved upwardly toward the sides thereof, whereby the type bars will all strike a common printing center, an operating device for eachtype bar comprising a hook mounted for longitudinal and pivotal movement, means for connecting the hook with a type bar, whereby a pivotal movement of the hook will operate the type bar, keys, means whereby, upon the depression of a key, the
corresponding, hook will be moved longitudinally, a universal magnet, a universal bar operatively connected with the magnet, said parts being so arranged that when a hook is moved longitudinally and the universal magnet operated thev hook will cause the corresponding type bar to be operated.
24. In an electrically operated typewriter, the combination of keys, a series of selective magnets, means for establishing a circuit through a selective magnet by the depression of a corresponding key, an armature for each selective magnet, type bars, an operating device for each type bar comprising a hook capable of longitudinal and pivotal movement, means for connecting each hook with a selective magnet whereby, when the selective magnet is energized the hook will be moved only in a longitudinal direction, means for connecting each hook with a type bar, a universal magnet, a universal bar operatively connected with the universal magnet and designed to be engaged by said hooks, said parts being so arranged that when the universal bar is moved the hook will be given a pivotal movement only and the corresponding type bar will be operated without affecting the relation between the corresponding selective magnet and its armature.
25. In an electrically operated typewriter, the combination of keys, type bars, a selective electromagnet for each key, means for establishing an electric circuit through a selective magnet upon the depression of the corresponding key, a type bar operating device for each type bar, means operated by the selective magnet for moving said type bar operating device to position for being operated upon the depression of a corresponding key, a universal magnet, a circuit establishing and breaking device for the universal magnet, electrically operated means automatically actuated upon the completion of a circuit through the selective magnet for actuating the circuit making and break ing device to close the circuit through the' is depressed, type bars, a type bar operating devicefor each type bar, means actuated by a selective magnet for moving the type bar operating mechanism of a corresponding type bar to position for operation upon the completion of a circuit through the selective magnet, a universal magnet, an armature for same, means operated by said armature for operating a type bar operating device when the latter has been moved to position for being operated, a circuit making and breaking device for the universal magnet, and electrically operated means actuated upon and by the completion of a circuit through any selective magnet for closing the circuit making and breaking device to close a circuit through the universal magnet.
27; In an electrically operated typewriter, the combination of keys, selective magnets, means for establishing a circuit through a corresponding selective magnet when the key is depressed, type bars, a type bar operating device for each type bar, means actuated by a selective magnet for moving the type bar operating mechanism of a corresponding type bar to position for operation upon the completion of a circuit through the selective magnet, a universal magnet, an armature for same, means operated by said armature for operating a type bar operating device when the latter has been moved to position for being operated, a circuit making and breaking device for the universal magnet, and electrically operated means actuated upon and by the completion of a circuit through any selective magnet for actuating the circuit making and breaking device to close a circuit through the-universal magnet, and means for holding the circuit making and breaking device in its closed position, said means being automatically released by the movement of the armature toward the universal magnet.

In an electrically operated typewriter, the combination of a series of type bars, the pivotal supports of which are arranged on a line extended transversely of the machine and curved upwardly toward the sides thereof so that the type bars will all strike a common printing center, an operating device for each type bar comprising a pivoted arm 'operatively connected with the type bar, a hook supportedf6i16iigitiidina1' andpivotal hook thereby to move said hook on its pivot in the direction required for imparting a striking movement to the corresponding type bar. 29. In an electrically operated typewriter,
the combination of a series of type ars pivcloser, an armature for each selective magnet, means for connecting each armature with a corresponding hook arranged to move the hook longitudinally upon the movement of the armature toward the magnet, a universal magnet, an armature therefor, a universal bar operatively connected. with said armature and designed to be engaged by said hook, said parts being so arranged that when the universal bar is moved the hook will be given a pivotal movement only and the corresponding type bar will be operated without aifecting the-relation between the corresponding selective magnet and its armature.

In an electrically operated typewriter of the class employing selective magnets for moving type bar devices to position to be operated and a universal magnet for moving the selective type bar device to printing position, the combination of ke s, and means actuated by the closing of a smgle electrical contact at any of said keys for establishing a circuit through a selective magnet and a separate circuit through the universal magnet.

A device of the class described, comprising a series ofkeys, a selective electromagnet for each key, means for establishing an electric-circuit through one of said electromagnets upon a depression of the corresponding key, a selective armature for each selective electromagnet, a rod adjacent to a series of selective armatures and designed to be moved by the movement of any of said selective armatures toward its magnet, means operated by the movement-of said rod for closing a circuit closing device, a universal magnet, an armature therefor, a
