COOIANG SYSTEM FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES.

2 SHEETS-SHEET 2 Unirian "s'rii'riisA PATENT o PHLIPPE MONTBARBON, vOF NEUILLY-SUR-SEINE' FRANCE, ASSIGNOR TO SOCIET ANONYME MONTBARBON, OF NEUILLY-SUR-SEINE, FRANCE.
i COOLING SYSTEM FOR INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINES.
Application led May-1l, 1912. Serial No. 696,763.
vhave invented certain new and useful Iniprovenients in Cooling Systems for Internal-Combustion Engines, of which'. the fol! lowing is a specification. l
rIhis invention relates to systeins for cooling the engine in inotor vehicles with exlosion engines, and relates more particulgarly to air-cooling systenis for stationary nii'ilti-cylinder engines.
It haschiefiy for its object to improve the eliiciency ofthe systeins in question, and inore particularly those ofthe air cooling type and to render-them easier to design and of a more pleasing ap earance.
It chiefly consists i so in arranging the systems in question so that the circulation of air is produced by the simultaneous action ot pressure at the admiA sionend of the system and suction at the discharge end thereof which enables the circulation in question to take place under the best conditions; andl in so arranging the systems in question that when a multi-cylinder engine is to be cooled, the said cylinders are cooled. not in series, as hitherto, but in parallel, which enables a better general cooling to be obtained.
The invention will be clearlyl understood from the following description and from the accompanying drawings which however are inerely given byfway of example.
Figure 1 of the said drawings shows,.in
axial longitudinal section, partly in eleva' tion, the front portion of'a motor car with a .tour-cylinderexplosion engine, and withI an air cooling apparatus arranged accord-- ing to this invention. Fig. 2 shows in front elevation the said front part, and iinally Fig. 3 shows the saine frontl part in horizontal cross-section on line 3-3 ot Fig.. l.
According to this invention, and more particularly according to that method of carrying it out illustrated in the drawings, when Specification of Letters Patent.
rammed oet. 5,1915;
bonnet is provided a .kind of nozzle oi funnel I) of such kind thatlduring the driving forward of the car the air is forced to rush into ituinder pressure and to subsequently pass either directly or, after. its passage through a fan c, toward the i'eai' of the said bonnet. The said nozzle is preferably built in such manner as to have an outside shape siniilar to that of radiators or hydro-aerorcfrigerators of the usual kind arranged at the back of the bonnet, and its inoutii is covered with a grating Z1 to imitate that prt vided on a radiator of the type just referred to, the gratingserving partly to stop` the dust. The funnel is also provided at a suit` able point with one or more openings 1b2 to allow the liquids and dust that may have passed through the said mouth, to escape outward without passing through the bonnet a; and, finally, it is surrounded'by wall elements of such kind as to foi-1n a tank 6l,
which ina'y be utilized for instance,'to contain hydrocarbon. The said fan c is of tlie- I ,type of well known fans with its diffuser in the shape of a spiral. The lower art of the said bonnet a which is preferab y` airtight, may be provided with either a single opening e facing toward the back in such inanner as to forni an exhauster during the driving, or, in addition to such an opening c one or incre other openings eo'of the saine kind but ot smaller size. In. the interior of the said bonnet a are provided a series of four pipes each of which surrounds one of the `four cylinders of the engine, and the upper edges of these pipes fit in openingsin a horizontal partition plate p that is suitably supported within the bonnet and joined at its edges to the corresponding walls ot' the bonnet. In consequence of this arrange 4niexit, it will be apparent that the air, on
being forced into' the said bonnet, has to pass from' the nozzle l) to the said opening or openings c and e", by Athe four conduits formed by thesaid pipes. are :at the saine ,tiine inade and arranged either as shown in the drawing, with circular cross section and concentric with the cylinders, in which case, las shown in the drawing, the cylinders 'have longitudinal 105 `i'ibs; or, unlike iny the illustration, the said cylinders may have annular'ribs, which may be rectangular or oval in cross-sectionand ina-y be disposed horizontally. vln that way a system is obtaiiied,-inore particularly if 110 The said pipes 10@ eure isizliien to n:-,e zr, detnil nrinngjelnents. there eienrly nhon'n in the dr:l\\`ing' nhieh perteetr 't'nhiin the. nhovennenlionert Conditionn.. n# ni'd he rendihV mniemtood nithont :in 'r inriher exphinntion.
