JOSEPH CIPOLLONI, or FRANKLIN, KENTUCKY,
WASHBOARD.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, J osnrn: CIPOL ONI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Franklin, in the county of Simpson and In carrying out the invention, an object in view has been economy of time, labor-and soap and to this end I provide a board with an opening to expose the surface of the soap which is held ina suitable receptacle movably mounted upon the board with respect to the opening aforesaid so as to permit of disposition in operative .or inoperative position at will. o A further object of my device is toso arrange the rubbing elements of my board that they, in addition to performing their regular function at all times, cooperate with the soap to hold the same when it 'is in position at the opening and as it is automatically fed by its holder. r V In addition to the foregoing features, it is comprehended to provide. a spring actuated member for feeding the soap, said member also forming manipulative means for moving the soap receptacle in orderto expose the soap surface or remove it from said exposed positionylocking means is also embodied in the construction of the spring actuated momher to facilitate the operation of removal of thesoap holder from the board and replen ishing of the supply of soap.
These andsuch other objects as may hereinafterappear are attained by the novel constrluction, combination, and arrangement of parts ,to be hereinafter specifically described and claimed.
Reference will now be had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wash board embodying my attachment. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in elevation showing Specification of Letters Patent. 7 o
Application filed March 10, 1915. Serial No. 13,409. i

more clearly the coaction of therubbing members with which the; washboardis provlded and the soap contained bythe soap receptacle, when said receptacle is in "opeTat1V6;POS 1tlOIl. Fig. 3 1s a detailfragmentary view of the back of the boardand showing more clearly the mountingof :the soap receptacle thereupon. Fig.- 4 is ayertical sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line H, of Fig. 3.
Throughout the following detail description, and on the-several figures-of the drawings, similar parts are referred to bylike reference characters. b V
. Referring to the drawing, and specifically describing my invention it is contemplated to utilize a washboardconsisting of the V usual side frame members l and a backboard stand pressure incidentalto the use of the At predetermined point in the surface of the back 2 0f the washboard,:pref-.-
device.
erably adjacent to its lower end is-formed an opening 4; of s'uitablesize and shape-to conform to a conventional soap cake, the latter to be exposed at-saidopening in a manner to be moreclearly describedhereinafter.-
One of the essential features of wash boardronstructioni=is the arrangement of the rubbingelementsS so that they will extendtransverselyacross the opening 4L and such members, while obviously performing their normal function, also act to retain the soap'when it is exposed at the opening 4.
Secured to the back of the board are spaced guide members or strips 5 between which is slidably mounted a soap receptacle 6, the latter of a suitable size and shape to hold a cake of soap 7. Within there'ceptacle and behind the cake of soap is mounted a follower or block 8 having a headed handle or plunger member 9 extending rearwardly and through an opening 10 in the rear wall of the receptacle 6, a spring 11 being interposed between said wall and the block 8 in order to actuate said follower and normally cause pressure against the soap 9 tending to hold the same against the back when the receptacle is in inoperative position with respect to the opening a of the backboard, or against the rubbing bars 3 eX- tending over the opening just mentioned when the receptacle is in its operative position with respect to said opening.
From the foregoing description, it will be obvious that under conditions requiring the soaping of clothes which are to be washed, the receptacle 6 holding the soap is moved downwardly so as to expose the soap at the opening 4 and to accomplish this disposi tion, the operator grasps the plunger 9, relieving by retraction, pressure against said soap and moving the receptacle downwardly between its guide members until the soap registers with the opening in the board. Release of the plunger will through the action of the spring press the soap against the bars and as the clothes are rubbed over the surface they are sufficiently soaped in a well recognized manner, the soap being automatically fed through the action of the spring as said soap is used. When a sufficient supply of the soap has been obtained, the reverse movement of the soap receptacle is caused, that is the member 6 is moved upwardly until it assumes a position such as shown in Figs. 3 and a. The spring actuated follower 8 through its pressure against the soap which rests against the back of the board 2 holds the receptacle adequately at its adjusted position. Obviously the plunger 9 of the follower block constitutes manipulative means for the receptacle as well as a guide member for the follower. It is designed also to provide locking means for the follower, and to this end a lug 12 projects laterally from the plunger and when said plunger is turned so that the lug registers with the lateral" extension 10 of the opening 10, the plunger may be retracted until the projection 12 is positioned beyond the rear wall of the receptacle 6 whereupon a slight turn of the plunger will enable the projection 12 to engage the back and hold the plunger retracted. This greatly facilitates the sliding action of the receptacle between its guides or its entire removal there from for the purpose of replenishing the soap contained therein.
I preferably reinforce the rubbing bars 3 adjacent to the opening a of the back by employing suitable keepers 13, one at each side of the opening and secured to the back over the bars in a manner most clearly shown in Fig. 2. This will prevent the bars from being bent at this point as well as holding them against pressure of the soap when the latter is disposed at the opening as hereinbefore mentioned. r
The aforesaid arrangement enables the use of the soap most economically yet eliminates the necessity of handling the soap directly or allowing it to remain in the liquid with the clothes, resulting in unnecessary waste.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
l. A washboard having an opening arranged in its rubbing surface, a soap receptacle mounted on said board and adapted to be disposed at the opening aforesaid, means for automatically feeding soap during rubbing action on the board, said means constituting manipulative means for moving the receptacle to or away from the opening aforesaid.
2. A washboard having an opening in its rubbing surface, a soap receptacle mounted upon the board and bodily movable to expose soap carried thereby at the opening or remove said soap therefrom, a spring actuated member in said receptacle for feeding soap during action, said member constituting holding means for retaining the receptacle and its contents at adjusted positions.
3. A washboard having an opening in its rubbing surface, a soap receptacle mounted upon the board and bodily movable to and from the opening aforesaid to expose soap carried thereby, and manipulative means for moving the receptacle and soap into operative and inoperative position with respect to the opening in the rubbing surface.
4:. A washboard having an opening therein, a soap receptacle slidably mounted on the back of said board, a spring actuated follower arranged in the receptacle normally tending to displace the soap from the receptacle and holding it against the board to maintain the receptacle at different positions, a plunger connected to the follower for retracting the same to permit movement of the receptacle, said plunger constituting manipulative means for operating the receptacle.
5. A washboard having an opening in its rubbing surface, a soap receptacle mounted upon said board and movable into operative and inoperative positions with respect to the opening, soap feeding means carried by the receptacle, manipulative means for said feeding means, said manipulative means constituting manipulative means also for actuating the receptacle, and a locking member carried by said manipulative means for holding-the feeding means in an inoperative position.
6. A washboard having an opening in its rubbing surface, a soap receptacle movably mounted upon said board, guide members carried by the board with which said receptacle cooperates, a follower block disposed in said receptacle, a spring interposed manipulative means, and a locking lug on Witnesses:
