To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, RODOLPH F. MORSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grate- Bars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cast-metal grate-bars for furnaces, and it consists in the novel construction of the bar itself, which constitutes unit-member of the grate. Y
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my improvement, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the grate-bar or unit member; Fig. 2 is a side view, in enlarged scale, showing a plurality of the units mounted for rocking or shaking action; Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view, taken on line 3-8 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is an end view, showing a detail.
It is to be understood that the members or elements comprising my improved grate-bar A are cast from a pattern and constitute a single casting or unit.
My invention resides essentially in providing the grate-bar unit A with a plurality of uniformly spaced parallel transverse members or cross-bars n, having the portion m of the latter, intermediate the longitudinal side ties b b, bent laterally in vertical planes to form curved parallel air spaces 8, and having the upper or top face t of the cross-bar members a crowning or curved longitudinally from one end to the other; each of said upper faces of the members a is provided with a continuous score or groove 9 formed therein for the retentionof ashes. It may be added that the said groove conforms to the vertical and lateral curvatures of the members n, as represented most clearly in Figs. 1 and 3.
The grate-bar is provided with end mem bers a a, each end having a short longitudinally extending trunnion or journal (1 disposed centrally near its upper edge. One of the said ends has a downward extension 0: adapted to connect with a horizontally movable rod (Z jointed to a link (Z in turn jointed to a vertical lever cl pivoted at e to a bracket 6 secured to a stationary front member f of the furnace. in a well known way; an excess movement permits the fire coals and ash on the grate to be dumped. Stationary side bars B, having spaced recesses 25 formed in the upper edge to receive the trunnions a in connection with stationary front and back members, f and 8 respectively, may be employed to support the several grate-bars constituting the net grate surface or area.
By means of my improved grate-bar unit construction the cross-bar members a thereof are adapted to more successfully withstand uthe forces ofexpansion and contraction without injury to the grate. Another ad vantage resulting from the said curved form is that air passing upward through the air passages s is more evenly distributed through the fire on the grate, thus increasing the efliciency of the coal by its more perfect combustion. At the same time the grooves g serve to retain fine ash lodged therein, thereby preventing the cross-bar members a from becoming overheated and warped, thus prolonging the life and usefulness of the grate and reducing the cost incident to renewal and repair.
I claim:
1. A grate-bar having the following elements or members arranged and cast in one piece and forming a unitary gratebar, said grateba-r consisting of the two ends, each end having a trunnion or ournal, one of the ends being also provided with a downward extension arranged to connect with manually controlled means for tilting or rocking a plurality of the grate-bars, a pair of parallel longitudinally extending main tie bars connecting said ends, a plurality of parallel transverse cross-bar members spaced longi tudinally on and uniting the said tiebars, the upper face or edge of each transverse cross-bar being convex and provided with a longitudinally extending groove adapted to retain. ashes, and having the portion of the cross-bar members intermediate the main tie-bars curved laterally or sidewise in allel longitudinal side ties or bars disposed in a horizontal plane, oppositely arranged transverse end members connecting said side-ties, a plurality of spaced parallel transverse cross-bar members extending across and uniting the said side-ties, said transverse cross-bar members being curved laterally in a horizontal plane, correspondingly curved open passages formed between the adjacent sides of the respective transverse cross-bar members, the upper face of the said transverse cross-bars being convex and each provided with a longitudinal groove adapted to retain ashes, and manually controlled means connected with :the grate-bar units for tilting the latter in unison.
8. A cast metal grate-bar unit for furnaces, comprising a pair of laterally separated longitudinal main ties, means connectpl Q this ate t ma b us ed 0 ing the ends of the ties together, and a plurality of cross bars spaced longitudinally on the main ties connecting the latter transversely to form an unobstructed passage for air between the adjacent sides of each pair of crossbars and the inner sides ofisaid longitudinal main ties, said cross-bar members being curved laterally in a horizontal plane and having their upper faces convex and provided with longitudinal grooves conforming to the lateral and vertical contours of the cross-bar members.
