Be it. known that I. Lans W. 56a indicates a cap which is fitted upon the sleeve 47 and is secured thereto by a set-screw 56, as best shown in Fig. 4. The cap 56a has a depending ilange 56 which lits over an upwardly-projecting flange 52 on the -gland 52, thereby a'ording protection against the admission of sand to the bearing. The flange 56e is provided with outwardlypro1ectmg 56d. As the sleeve 47 and cap 56a rotate with the shaft 15, the wings 56" serve to throw sand and other gritty matter outwardly from the shaft. and there by further protect the lower bearing from injury by the admiion of such substans to it.
It will be noted from the foregoing de scription that the lower shaft is entirely inclosed and protected, butthe shaft is zill capable of being vertically adjusted, :is hereinbefore described. It will be noted. further, that the several runner chambers are interposed between the lowermost shaftbring46andtheshaftbearing37,both of which are protected against the admission of sand; Theupper bearing is further protected by the transverse passiges 38 which, as hereinbefore described; permit water to outintothewellwitholltgoingup intothebearing 37. sothatanysand carried by the water is discharged into the well and do not reach said bearing. By this construction thebearings are not cut out or inured to any appreciable extent as compared with other pumps of a similar type in which the saine protectionz is not afforded.
