1/ ball whom it may concern Be it known that I, EARL W. vDorrnnga citizen of the United States, and a resident of Aitkin, in the county of Aitkin and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and limproved Power-Spud for Dredges, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription.

conveniently and quickly adjusting the spud, to change the position of the dredge or simi lar machine correspondingly, and to allow of quickly withdrawing the spuds from active positions whenever it is desired to move. tlie'niachine about from one place to another.
For the purpose mentioned, use ismade of spud made in sections slidable one on the other, and power-driven means for shifting the spud sections one relative to the other.

On the deck of the hull A of the dredge or i similar machine is mounted an A-fra'me or a shear B connected by the usual adjusting cable C with the boom D mounted at ts inner end on a turntable E arranged on the .hull A, the outer end of the boom D carrying the usual guide rod F and bucketG together with the necessary mechanism for manipulating the bucket in the usual manner.
On opposite sides of the shear B are arranged power spuds H, each consisting of an upper section H and a lowersection H slidable on the upper section H.,'preferably by telescoping therein, as plainly indicated in the drawings. When theshaft P is driven then the worm 0 imparts a rotary motion to the worm wheel 0, thereby driving the shaft L so that the pinion L in mesh with the rack K moves the lower spud section H upward or downward on the upper spud section H according to the direction in which the shaft P is turned at the time. It is understood that after the lower spud section H has been adjusted to the desired position, the motor T is stopped and the spud section H? remains locked .in the adjusted position'by the worm O engaging the worm wheel 0. It is also understood that when the lower spud section H is caused to slide up or down tire spa; is caused. to swing inward or outward owing to the connection of the spud. H

From the foregoing it will be seenthatby the arrangement described the spud can be readily adjusted to change the position of the dredge or other machine correspondingly, and to allow of quickly withdrawing the spuds from active position whenever it is desired to move the machine about from one place to another.
It is understood that the lower spud section H can be readily moved downward on theupper spud section H by the powerful mechanism described, so that the machine can be readily raised or its level changed.
It will also be noticed that when it is desired to move the dredge or similar machine about from one place to another, the
lower spud section H can be readily moved in the upper spud section H so as to move the foot I off the ground without requiring swingingof the boom D and parts support ed thereby from side to side in order to raise the spuds one at a time, as heretofore practised.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A dredging or similar machine provided with spuds on opposite sides of the machine, each spud being made of an upper and lower section slidable one upon the other, the lower section being provided with a rack, a pinion mounted on the upper section andengaging the rack of the lower section, a worm wheel on the shaft of the said pinion, a worm carried by the upper spud section and meshing with the worm wheel, and a driven shaft upon which the worm is mounted to slide and with which said worm turns. 7 i I 2. A dredging or similar machine provided with spuds on opposite sides of the machine, each spud beingmade of an upper and a lower section slidable one onthe other, a rack on the lower section, a pinion in mesh with the said rack, a pinion shaft carrying the said pinion and journaled on the upper spud section, a worm wheel on the said shaft, a bearing mounted to swing on the said pinion shaft, a driven shaft, and a worm mount-' ed to turn with'and to slide on the said driven shaft, the said worm being carried by the said bearing.
3. A'dredging or similar machine provided with spuds on opposite sides of the machine, each spud being made of an upperand alower section telescoping one in the other, a rack on the lower section, a pinion in. mesh with the said rack, a pinion shaft carrying the said pinion and journaled on the upper spud section, aworm wheel on the said shaft, a driven shaft, a worm mounted to turn with and to slide on said driven shaft, said worm being mounted to swing, a motor on the machine, and a gearingcons necting the motor shaft with the said driven shaft.
4-. In a dredge or similar machine, a hull, shears mounted on the hull, spuds each formed of an upper and a lower section slidable one on the other, the upper section having its upper end pivoted to the upper end of-the shears and the lower section having-a rack, a pinion mounted on the lower end of the upper section and meshing with the rack of the lower section, a driven shaft, and gearing for operating-the" pinion from the driven shaft, the member of the gearing carried by the shaft being slidably mounted thereon. 5. In a dredge boat, in combination a deck, an upright frame mounted on said deck, a pair of spuds pivot-ally connected to said frame, each spud comprising a supporting arm and an extensible arm fitted in telescopic relation to said supporting arm, means'to extend and retract said extensible arm mounted at the end of said supporting arm from which saidextensible arm extends,
power means mounted on said deck, and an extensible shaft having connections with said first mentioned means and said power means, one of said connections comprising a pivoted bearing whereby the extensible arm may be extended or retracted at different angular positions of said spud.
6. In a, dredge or similar machine, a hull, a frame mounted on the hull, spuds each formediof an upper and a lower section slidable one on the other, the upper section having its upper end pivoted to the upper end of the frame and the lower section having a rack, a pinion mounted on the lower end of the upper sectionand meshing with the rack of the lower section, power means on the hull, a driven shaft connecting said power means and said pinion in swinging and sliding relation whereby said driven shaft will be operative in different angular positions of said-spud.
