To all m]: am it may concern 7 1 Be'it known that I, ADELAIDE TArLoR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stevens Point, in the county of Portage and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat- Boxes; and I do declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of; the mvention, such as will enable others skilled 1n the art to which it appertains to make and be kept free from dust and in such a manner vide a hat box that is formed of cardboard or the like and consists of a rectangular body having a flanged and removable lid and hinged doors in one side wall so as to be easily opened and moved into closed position.

Another object of importance is to provide a hat box of the character described which may be opened on the side to enable storing of a large number of boxes one upon the other in such a manner that a person may readily remove the contents of any one of the boxes Without having to lift the boxes olf one another to remove the lid.

With these and other objects in view, the

invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.

2; Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blank fromwhich the box is constructed; Fig. 6 is a similar view of the blank from which the lid is constructed; and Fig. 7 is a detail perspectiveview of the front reinforcing mem- In the embodiment illustrated a box 1 is shown which may be either rectangular or square as desired, being here shown square, and which is composed of heavy cardboard or other suitable material, the blank from which it is formed being of the shape shown in Fig. 5 and comprising a bottom 2 having side members 3, 4 and 5 hingedly connected to three side edges thereof, and a lip 6 designed to extend upwardly from the other side edge of said bottom. The side 4 is substantially of the same size and shape as the bottom 2. The sides 3 and 5 are provided at the rear side edges thereof with flaps 7 and 8 here shown of the same size and configuration as the side member 4 and which are designed to overlap said side member and each other when the box is assembled as shown in Fig. 4, thus forming three thicknesses at the rear of the box, said flaps and member 4 being connected in any suitable manner, preferably by means of clips 9 which connect the upper edges thereof and the lower edge of the overlapping outside flap 7 may be secured by stapling, gluing, or in any other suitable manner.

Connected withv the front side edges of the members 3 and 5 are two doors 10 and 11 which extend from the lower edge or bottom of said side members to a point near the top thereof, and when closed are designed to slightly overlap at their edges to provide an eflicient closure at this side of the box, in which position they are retained by means of tapes 12 which are secured intermediately of their ends to the side members 3 and 5, said tapes being here shown passed through alined apertures 13 in said side members and secured to said members by staples 14 or any other suitable means so that one end of each tape extends forwardly in position to be passed across the doors 10 and lland tied for securely holding these doors in closed position. The other ends of the tape are made of sufficient length to extend upwardly over the box for securing the top 20 thereto as will be hereinafter more fully described.

Extending from the upper portion of the side edges of the members 3 and 5 are two strips 15 and 16 which are of the same length as the width of the side members 3 and 5 and are designed to be disposed in overlapping relation as shown in Fig. 3 and secured together by any suitable means, clips 17 being shown for this purpose and which also connect a reinforcing member 18 shown disposed on the inner face of the overlapping strips 15 and 16 and which is preferably made of a width greater than the Width of said strips although not necessarily so, the additional width of said reinforcing strip extending below the lower edges of the strips 15 and 16 and forming a stop or abutment 19 against which the doors 10 and 11 are designed to close. This reinforcing strlp 18 is shown provided at its opposite ends with right angular inwardly extending arms 18 which lie against the inner faces of the sides 3 and 5 and serve to reinforce the corners of the tops where the strips 15 and 16 join said sides 3 and 5.

The lip 6 which is secured to the bottom 2 in a plane below the strips 15 and 16 forms a stop for the lower ends of the doors to prevent them from being forced into the box should pressure be exerted thereon.

The top 20 is shown of a shape to conform to the shape of the box to which it is to bd applied and is provided on its side edges with depending flanges 21 and 22, the flanges 22 on opposed sides of the top being of a length corresponding to the width of the top, while the flanges 21 on the two other sides of the top are of a length greater than the width of the top providing flaps 23 at the ends thereof which are designed to overlap the adjacent ends of the flanges 22 and to be secured thereto in any suitable manner, clips 24 being here shown for this purpose, although obviously they may be glued if found more desirable. When this top has been set up with these flanges arranged at right angles and the flaps 23 secured in operative position, it is ready to be placed on the box with the flanges thereof shut down over the side edges of the box and thus completely closing it at its upper end. When so positioned, this top is held against accidental removal by means of the free ends of the tapes 12 which extend across said top 20 and are tied at the center thereof in the usual manner.

From the above description it will be obvious that these boxes with the tops secured in position thereon by the tapes referred to may be placed one upon the other on shelves or otherwise with the doors 10 and 11 disposed outwardly so that when access to the box is desired all that is necessary is to untie the ends of the tapes which secure the doors and said doors may be readily opened to permit the contents to be removed and replaced whenever desired.

1. A hat box comprising a bottom wall,

side walls secured to three of the edges of the bottom wall. a lip secured to the other edge thereof and extended upward to form a door stop, doors hingedly connected to the free ends of two of. said side Walls, said doors being of a height less than the height of said side walls, a strip connecting said side walls above said doors, a stop extending below said strip and a closure for the upper end of said box.

2. A hat box comprising a bottom wall, side walls secured to three of the edges of the bottom wall, a lip secured to the other edge thereof, doors hingedly connected to the free ends of two of said side walls, said doors being of a height less than the height of said side walls, a strip connecting said side walls above said doors, a removable top for closing the upper end of said box, and a reinforcing strip secured to the inner face of said cross bar and extending below said cross bar to form a stop for said doors at the upper ends thereof, the lip secured to said bottom forming a stop for the lower end thereof.

3. A hat box consisting of a bottom wall,

side walls secured to three of the edges of said bottom wall and separated from each other, two of said side walls being provided at one end with overlapping flaps adapted to overlap each other and the other side wall of the box to form a reinforced wall of triple thickness, doors hinged at one side to the free edges of said sides and adapted to close the open side of said box, said doors being of less height than said sides to which they are connected terminating short of the upper ends thereof, and a connecting strip arranged between said sides above said doors. A hat box consisting of a bottom wall, side walls secured to three of the edges of said bottom wall and separated from each other, two of said side walls being provided at one end with overlapping flaps adapted to overlap each other and the other side wall of the box to form a reinforcing wall, doors hinged at one side of thefree edges of said flap carrying sides and adapted to close the open side of said box, said doors being of less height than said sides to which they are connected terminating short of the upper ends thereof, a connecting strip arranged between said sides above said doors, and a reinforcing strip for said connecting strip arranged on the inner face thereof and having right angularly extending arms at its opposite ends positioned to engage the inner faces of the sides to which the doors are connected.

5. A hat box consisting of a bottom wall, side walls secured to three of the edges of said bottom wall and separated from each other, two of said side walls being provided at one end with overlapping flaps adapted to overlap each other and the other side wall of the box to form a reinforcing wall, doors hinged at one side to the free edges of said flap carrying sides and adapted to close the open side of said box, said doors being of less height than said sides to which they are connected terminating short of the upper ends thereof, a connecting strip arranged between said sides above said doors, and a reinforcing strip .for said connecting strip arranged on the inner face thereof and having right angularly extending arms at its opposite ends positioned to engage the inner faces of the sides to which the doors are connected, said reinforcing strip being wider than the strip with which it is connected and with its lower edge extending below the lower edge of said connecting strip.

6. A hat box consisting of a bottom wall, side walls secured to three of the edges of said bottom wall, and separated from each other, two of said side walls being provided at one end with overlapping flaps adapted to overlap each other and the other side wall of the box to form a reinforcing wall, doors hinged at one side to the free edges of said flap carrying sides and adapted to close the open side of said box, said doors being of less height than said sides to which they are connected terminating short of the upper ends thereof, a connecting strip arranged between said sides above said doors, a reinforcing strip for said connecting strip arranged on the inner face thereof and having right angularly extending arms at its opposite ends positioned to engage the inner faces of the sides to which the doors are connected, said. reinforcing strip being wider than the strip with which it is connected with the lower edge extending below the lower edge of said connecting strip to form an abutment for said doors at their upper ends, an upstanding lip on the free edge of said bottom over which said doors are designed to lap to form an abutment at the bottom of the box for said doors, and means for holding said doors in closed position.

7. A hat box having a removable top and hinged doors at one side thereof, tapes secured intermediately of their ends totwo of the opposed side walls of said box, the ends of said tapes extending in planes at right angles to each other, two of the ends of said tapes being designed to pass over the doorsat the side of the boxes and be secured together for holding said doors in closed position, and the other ends of said tapes being adapted to pass over the top of the box and secured for holding the top in closed position.
