T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HOWARD LYON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gloucester City, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Burner- Tips, of which the following is a full, clear,
and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a burner tip embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same; and Figs. 8 and 4 are, respectively, bottom and top plan views of the tip.
The several figures show the tip enlarged from its actual size.
My invention has relation to burner tips, and is designed to provide a tip in which the gas and air passage or bore of the tip is so constructed as to prevent back-firing and to produce a broad flame capable of properly filling and incandescing an incandescent mantle. l/Vhen a mixture of air and gas is distributed through a nozzle having an outlet of a certain cross sectional area, it has a certain discharge velocity depending upon the cross sectional area. If the area of the outlet is reduced and the rate of flow is maintained, the velocity of fiow will be increased approximately in proportion to the diminution in the area of the outlet. If the passage is contracted at the outlet end, backfiring is prevented, but a long slender cone is produced which drives the gas forcibly through the lower portion of the mantle and results in failure of the upper portion of the mantle to properly incandesce. I have found that if a proper constriction be made in the upper portion of the bore of the tip, the back firing tendency will be limited to the point of constriction, while below this point, the issuing gases will expand in a manner to produce a broad flame capable of filling and incandescing the mantle. A further object in locating the constriction relatively high in the tip bore is that this portion of the tip is relatively much cooler than the lower portion. Hence, the back firing velocity is materially reduced at this point.

I Internally the tip has the upper chamber 5, which at its lower portion tapers downwardly and inwardly to the bore 6 of the tubular portion of the tip. This bore is constricted at 7, where it joins the cone portion of the chamber 5; and below the point 7, its cross sectional area gradually increases. The back firing in a tip of this character is in all ordinary conditions of gas quality and pressure confined entirely below the constriction '7, and in case burning should persist in the region below such constriction, a gauze, located above the constricted portion, will be unharmed.
It will be evident that any measure of protection desirable may be obtained by diminishing the diameter of the constriction. I have obtained excellent results in a tip in which the diameter of the constricted portion is seventeen sixty-fourths of an inch, while the diameter of the bore at the outlet is eleven thirty-seconds of an inch. This gives a velocity of fiow at the constricted portion which is to that at the final outlet as 484: to 289. I do not, however, limit myself to these proportions, as they may be widely varied.
The tip can be readily molded in one piece from refractory material, and is free from joints or other parts which would be in juriously affected by the heat.
