My invention has for its` to improve the construction of sichrapparatus by decreasing the overall height, decreasing the number of parts, and reducing the cost of manufacture. The improvement is directed chiefly to the constmxction of the scavenging pump, but certain-`features of the compressor are also modified to attain the desired results.
In the drawing whichv illustrates one of the embodiments of my invention,"is shown a combined scavenging pump and compressor in vertical section.

From this chamber air is supplied to the working cylinder yor cylinders for scavengingpurposes and also to the first stage o'f a multi-'cylinder compressor by a pipe 4 indicated by a broken and dottedv line. At one side of the pump is a double V acting' reciprocatingy valve 5 that controls the admission of air to and its discharge from said pump. It is actuated by a lever 6 that derives its motion from an eccentric 7 mounted on the main shaft 8 of Air 4enters the valve easing through a suitable screen 9. The valve casing`10 is supported by the base and has ports 11 and 12 at its ends which communi- Mounted on top of the receiver is a casing 13 which supports the low pressure cylinder 14 of ythe compressor, there being connectingiribs 15 between the two. The cylinder is provided with a head 16 in which there are one or more inlet valves 17 and one or more discharge valves 18. This latter cylinder is also provided with a head 20 containing an inlet-valve21 which receives its air from the valve 18 through the pipe 22, indicated by a broken and' dotted line. A discharge valve 23 is' also provided in the head and highpressure or blast air isconveyed therefrom by the pipe 24, indicated by a broken and dotted line. Surrounding the compressor and mounted. on the casing 13 is a cover 25 forming a cooling vwater jacket.
The pistons 26,27 and-.28 for the scavenging pump and high and low pressure stages of the compressor are formed in a single unit. The stages of the compressor are v single acting while the pump is double act-5 mg The Pump Piston is of relatively larg diameter and comprises a peripheral portion containing packing rings that is connected to the trunk of piston 27 by an inclined web 29, said web forming the head of the piston. The lower part of the cylinder 14 also terminates in an inclined web 30 which in addition to supporting said cylinder forms the lower wali ofthe chamber 31 for the cooling water and also the'upper head of the pumpv cylinder. vInside of the receiver is a liner 32 forming thec'ylinder for the pump. It is provided with ports on one side thatregister with ports `11 and 12 in the valve casing 10. The lower wall of inder comprises a part of relatively large diameter and a part of smaller diameter between vwhich the-piston moves.

vIn order to guide the piston and prevent air from passing from the cylinder space it follows that the pump piston and the upper cylinder head must be similarly inclined receiver and cylinder head 33 it is evident that' considerable 'spacel 'in a vertical direc*- tion is saved because` the -Cylinders when considered together can be brought nearer to the main shait. Sulicient space is also provided for the connecting rod 37 to swing b'ack and forth as it is moved by the crank 38. Forming the pistons 26. and 27 in a single unit results in a saving in the' number of parts and also simplifies and reduces the cost of the machine work.
I regard it as being desirable to make all three pistons in a` single unit but this is not necessary. It will, however, be found preferable to make the pump and low pressure pistons as a vsingle unit yto reduce weight and cost of machining, and also to Aavoid special and irregular shapes and eXtra parts.
Arrangingthe tubularv member in tele-l scopic relation with the piston 27, besides decreasing the height of the apparatus as a whole, affords a simple means for forming the inner wall of the pump cylinder and also permits the use of a relatively long connecting rod, and one which can be connected 4 to the low pressure piston of the compressor,
as is desirable,
to obtain the most satisfactory operation. In 'addition to the features above specied the construction is advanta geous because the vparts may be readily taken down and reassembled lwhen necessary.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, I have described the principle of operation of my invention together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereofgbut I dcsireto have it understood that the apparatus shown is only illustrative, and that the invention can be carried out by other means. l l What I claim as new and desire to secure by ALetters Patent of the United States, is
