Be it known that I, FRANK Meomn-a citizen of the United States, residing at Govans, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoe-Calks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying draw- %[his invention relates to an improved horseshoe calk and has for its primaryobject to provide a device of this-character Which may be easily and quickly attached to the ordinary horseshoe to prevent the horse from slipping or falling on smooth or icecovered road surfaces.
It is another important object of the 1nvention to provide a detachable horseshoe calk which is applicable to horseshoes of various width and thickness without necessitating any changes whatever in the form or construction thereof and which Wlll posltively retain its applied position upon the shoe.
It is another and more specific object of my invention to provide a device of the above character including a calk body, and separable clamping members for engagement with the shoe cooperating with the opposite side faces of said body and exerting a wedging action thereon to retain said body 1n gripping engagement upon the bottom surface of the shoe.
The invention has for an additional object to provide a detachable horseshoe calk which is simple and inexpensive 1n its construction and embodies certain structural features which afford a maximum range of adjustment of the several cooperating parts.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination, and arrange ment of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my invention in its preferred form, applied to a horseshoe; Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical transverse section; Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the calk body; Fig. 5 is a similar view of one of the clamping members; and Fig. 6 isa perspective view showing a slightly difierent form of the invention.
Referring in detail to the drawing, '5 designates the body of the calk which is preferably of V or wedgeshaped form having the opposite convergently disposed side faces shown at 6 terminating in the point or gripping edge 7. The other opposite side faces of the calk body are also convergently disposed toward the point or gripping edge 7, as indicated at 8. Upon the wider or base end of this triangular shaped body, the same 1s formed with the laterally projecting flanges 9 which extend outwardly over the side faces 6. The surface of this widened base of the calk body has intersecting grooves 10 cut therein so that the same is roughened for engagement with the bottom face of the shoe bar. For the purpose of easily and quickly attaching the body of the calk to the shoe, I provide the clamping members 11. Each of these clamping members consists of a steel body 12 which is of tapering form and is provided with an inner or inclined beveled face 13 for engagement 1 against one of the inclined side faces 8 of the body 5. Upon the wider end of the body 12 of the clamping member, the longitudinal projection 14 is formed, and this projection is provided at its extremity with an inwardly disposed flange 15 which has a beveled or sharpened edge 16. Each of the clamping members is also provided with a short longitudinal slot 17 for a purpose to be later referred to, and upon the opposite longitudinal edges of. the clamping member, at the inner end of the projection 13, the obliquely inclinedlugs 18 are integrally formed. It will be observed that the overhanging flanges 9 on the calk body are of. greatest thickness at their central portions and gradually taper or curve upwardly at their opposite ends. Against these tapering surfaces of the flanges 9, the lugs 18 on the clamping members are adapted to bear. The calk body 5 is provided with an opening 19 which is designed to receive the bolt 20. This bolt is adapted to be extended through the slots 17 in the clamping members and the opening 19 in the calk body, and the wall of the slot in one of the clamping members is formed with a countersink to receive the tapering head on one end of the bolt 20, so that the face of the clamping member and the head of the bolt will be flush. A nut 21 is adapted to be threaded on the other endof the bolt for engagement against the other of the clamping members.
For the purpose of obviating all possibilof the shoe, clamping members adapted for engagement upon opposite sides of the shoe and cooperating with the opposite faces of the calk body to force the same into frictional engagement with the bottom face of the shoe, a bolt extending through the clamping members and the calk body to hold the same in assembled relation, and a nut threaded upon one end of said bolt.

A detachable horseshoe calk including a calk body having opposite convergently inclined faces, clamping members also having inclined faces to co-act against the respective inclined faces of said calk body, said body being provided with a bolt receiving opening and each of the clamping members having a longitudinal slot to coincide with said opening, a bolt extending through said opening and slots, and a nut engaged upon said bolt to force the clamping members into engagement upon opposite edges of the shoe and cause said members to exert a wedging action against the call: body to force the same into biting frictional engagement with the bottom face of the shoe.
5. A detachable horseshoe call: including a. call: body provided with a bolt receiving opening, clamping members each having a longitudinal slot, a bolt extending through said opening and slots, said clamping members being shiftable upon the bolt longitudinally of the call: body, and a nut threaded upon said bolt to force the clamping members into engagement against the opposite edges of the shoe, said clamping members and the calk body being provided with coacting means whereby said body is forced into biting frictional engagement with the bottom face of the shoe.

A detachable horseshoe calk including a call: body having laterally projecting flanges on one end, the said end of the calk body having a roughened face for engagement with the bottom face of the shoe, separable clamping members each provided with bendable lugs for engagement against said flanges whereby the latter may be forced against the face of the shoe, and means for holding the call: body and clamping members in assembled relation and clamping the latter against the opposite edges of the shoe bar.

A. detachable horseshoe call: including a calk body having a roughened end face for biting engagement against the bottom face of the shoe, said end of the calk body being provided with laterally projecting flanges thereon, separable clamping members, one of said members being provided with means adapted to be forcibly engaged against said flanges to cause the roughened face thereof to bite into the shoe bar, and means for holding the calk body and clamping members in assembled relation and clamping said members against the opposite edges of the shoe.
8. A detachable horseshoe calk including a calk body having convergently inclined side faces, one end of said body being provided with laterally projecting flanges thereon, separable clamping members also having inclined faces to co-act against the respective inclined faces of the calk body, means for holding the calk body and clamping members in assembled relation and clamping said members against the opposite edges of the shoe, said members exerting a wedging action upon the calk body to cause the same togrip the bottom face of the shoe, and means on each of the clamping members adapted to be forcibly projected against said flanges to effect a further gripping action of the same upon the shoe.
9. A detachable horseshoe call: including a calk body having opposite convergently inclined side faces, separable clamping members each provided with inclined faces, to coact against the inclined faces of said body, each of said members having a longitudinal projection extending beyond one end of the calk body and the inner faces of said projections having longitudinally extending teeth formed thereon for gripping engagement against the opposite edges of the shoe, means for holding the body and clamping members in assembled relation, said members being provided with means affording longitudinal adjustment of the same with respect to the calk body, said holding means including a clamping bolt and nut whereby said members are forced into gripping engagement upon opposite edges of the shoe, said members exerting a wedging action upon the calk body and causing the same to grip the bottom face of the shoe.
