Be it known that I, Josnri-r H. Duunro, a citizen of the United States, residing at Presque isle, in the county of Aroostook and State of Maine, have invented new and useful Improvements in Concrete-Mixers, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention is designed as an improvement in the construction of cement, concrete or other plastic mixers, and its primary object is to provide a device for this purpose wherein a thorough mixing of the plastic compositions is produced with a minimum amount of energy and expenditure.
A further object `of the invention is to provide in connection with such a device, a novel and peculiar frame adapted to support the mixing chamber or drum in such a manner as to permit sufficient tilting thereof to facilitate the removal of the drum contents when desired.
'With the above and various other objects in view the invention consists essentially in the provision of a specially constructed 4frame having a trough or mixing chamber pivotally mounted or supported thereupon, and a shaft having a yplurality of oppositely disposed radiating blades secured thereto, the said shaft adapted to rotate or revolve within the trough whereby a thorough mixing of the trough contents is rendered possible.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in their preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, described vin the following specification arid then more particu larly pointed out in the claim which is appended hereto and forms a part of this application.
ln describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 4f is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is an end view of the drum and its supporting means.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein is illustrated the preq ferr-ed form of my invention the numeral 1 designates the frame base, one end of which is connected through the medium of a cross piece fr similar cross piece 3 is secured in any suitable manner upon the opposite end of the base 1, upon each end of which is disposed a pair of oppositely inclined uprights l connected at their upper extremity through the medium of an upper cross arm 5, the purpose of which will be hereinafter fully described. A pair of inclined parallel uprights 6 are secured to the base 1 near one end thereof, theupper extremities of which are secured to the cross arm 5 by means of a pair of parallel frame sections 7 disposed directly above and in alinem'ent with the base 1.
An auxiliary frame comprising side beams 8 and end beams 9 is centrallly pivoted, through the medium of a pair of laterally extending pins 9', with one end of the said frame normally resting upon the cross arm 5. A plurality of semicircular metallic bands 8 are secured as at 10 and extend from one to the other of the beams 8. .A cylindrical trough 11 is mounted upon the bands 8 where it is held in place through the medium of a shaft 12 journaled within suitable brackets 13 upon the end beams 9, and extending throughout the length of the trough. A pulley la is keyed or otherwise secured upon'one end of the said shaft 12 whereby a desired motion may be imparted thereto by any suitable driving means such as a gasolene engine (not shown). That portion of the shaft within the trough is preferably square in cross section to facilitate the attachment of a plurality of adjustable oppositely disposed mixing blades 15 secured thereupon through the medium of a pair of bolts 16 connecting each pair of blades and extending one above the other below the said shaft 12. A mouth 17, preferably funnel-shaped is provided in connection with the trough 11 to facilitate or permit the lling of the said trough when desired.
It is apparent upon application to Fig. 3 of the drawings that the inner end of each mixing blade extends beyond one face of the shaft 12 to which it is secured, the bolts 16 being so arranged with respect to the said shaft and the said blade as to pass through the extended portion of the latter and also the adjacent blade, thereby disposing the said bolt 16 in firm engagement with the face of the said shaft. The blades 15 are preferably arranged in pairs, of two each,
Y adjusted upon the shaft 12, the nuts'of the bolts 16 are loosened, the blades of each pair moved lengthwise the shaft, the said bolts'- acting as rollers therefor to facilitate such movement. After adjusting the blades upon the said shaft 12 as desired, the nuts are again tightened causing the said bladesto firmly engage the opposite faces of the shaft and the bolts 16 to likewise engage the faces of the said shaft other than those engaged by the said blades.
By pivotally mounting the auxiliary frame as above described the trough may be tilted as is clearly illustrated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings, in which' event the contents thereof is free to pass or run slowly out of the mixing chamber or trough 11, as the lower end'of the said trough, is provided with an opening 18, normally closed through the medium of a door 19 hingedly connected as at 20 and fastened through the medium of a spring latch 21 secured as at 22 upon the under side of the said trough.
By the provision of the oppositely disposed and `uniformly spaced apart mixing blades it will be seen that the contents of the trough is graduallyV worked or forced, when tilted toward the opening 18; that the additional weight of the pulley 14 is sufficient to normally hold the drum on a level or in such a manner as to cause the aux iliary frame to rest upon the cross arm 5 of the supporting frame; and that the shape of the trough shaft upon the interior of the drum, is such as to permit secure and convenient fastening of the mixing blades thereupon.
It will be further seen from the above, taken in connection With the accompanying drawings that the construction of the frame is such, as to produce an unusually strong and substantial support; that the means employed for vmounting the auxiliary frame will in no way interfere with the turning of the mixing blades or the shaft and that by the provision of the funnel-shaped mouth, filling of the drum is facilitated to a great extent. I desire it to be understood that l may make slight changes in the construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several parts, provided such changes fall within the scope of the subjoined claim.

In a mixing trough, a shaft polygonal in cross section, blades detachablyand adjustably secured to the shaft, the blades being arranged in pairs, the blades of one Vpair extending at a right angle to the blades of the pair next adjacent thereto, the blades of" each pair being engageable with the shaft at substantially diametrically opposite points, the inner terminal of each blade ex-y tending beyond that face of the` shaft against which it is secured, fastening elements extending through the blades of leach pair, the fastening elements being directly engageable with opposite faces of the shaft at substantially diametrically points for facilitating adjustment of the blades longitudinallyY on the shaft, and
` means to lock the fastening elements immovable subsequent to an adjusting of the blades7 as and for the purpose set forth.
