Jansen, a subject of the King of Sweden, and a resi dent of South River, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Use in Applying Clamps to Strips of Fabric, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to machines for use in applying to strips of fabrics clamps used for holding such st ips in spanning frames.
The machine herein shown and described Specification of Letters Patent.
s particularly adapted for use in applying the clamps employed in the spanning frame ilhistrated and described in my companion application for Letters Patent filed ()ctober 22, 1913, Serial No. 796,718. In the embroidering of handkerchiefs and the like in large numbers, it is the custom to mount a considerable number of handkerchiefs in a suitable frame, termed a spanning frame, the frame, with the spanned handkerchiefs within it, being then placed in a suitable embroidery machine, and then, by the operation of such machine, a likeornamei'ital figure or other device is stitched upon each of the handherchiefs or other article in such frame, simultaneously. In the use of the spanning frame of my said companion a iplication, the handkerchiefs, preparatory to being placed in tiie f'ame, are connected end to end by suitable clamps, taese clamps being adapted to fit in suitable seats formed in the frame and to be held in place in the frame by suitable fastening means. Each such chunp comprises two parallel clamping strips between which an end of one handkerchief or two ends of adj acent handherchiefs are to be gripped, and

The machine herein described facilitates the bringing together of such clamping strips, and the application of cover pieces, making it possible to apply the clamps to handkerchiefs veryrapidly.
My invention consists in the features of the novel. mechanism for the purpose specified, herein illustrated and described, which are set forth in the appended claims.

tate the application of spanning frame clamps to handkerchiefs and other objects to be spanned.
I will now proceed to describe my invention with reference to the accompanying drawings, and will then point out the novel features in claims.
In said drawings: Figure 1 shows a front elevation and Fi 2 a side elevation of one form of machine embodying my invention. Fig. 3 shows a fragmentary vertical section on the line VV of Fig. 1, and on a larger scale. F .l: is a detail sectional view taken on the same section line as Fig. 3, but showing two clamping strips brought together with two strips of fabric fastened between them, and clamp cover applied. Fig. 8 is an elevation of one of the clamp covers of tee spanning frame clamping devices. Fig. 9 is a diagrammatic perspective view illustrating the manner of connection of strips of fabric by clamps such as those which are applied to the fabric by use of the machine illustrated in Figs. 1-5 inclusive. Fig. 10 isa detail sectional view of aportion of a spanning frame with the clamping devices hereinbefore referred to in place therein.
In the drawii'igs, 1.0 designates a table of suitable dimensions and suitably supported. In the top of this table are slots 11 through which project opposing dogs 12 and The dog 13 are pivotaily mounted upon a slide 1% arranged to move said dogs 13 towarc. and from the dogs 12; such movement being elfected by engagement of rocker arms with rods 14-. projecting from the slide 14, and which also guide and support the slidelai, since the rods 1 1 pass through suitable sliding bearings in members 1O and 10 of the frame. T he rocker arms 15 are mounted upon a rock shaft 15 connected by a lever 16 and link 17 to a foot treadle 18. When this foot treadle is depressed the dogs 13 are moved toward the dogs 12 against the action of springs 19 and 19 and when the treadle is released these springs retract the slides 14 and dogs 13.
In the application of clamping devices to strips of fabric, in the machine forming the subject matter of the present description, one of the clamping strips 7 is placed against the dogs 12 with its flanges 9 beneath the teeth 20 of said dogs 12; another clamping member 7 is placed against the dogs 13 with its flanges 9 beneath the teeth 20 of said dogs 13; edge portions of two pieces of fabric are placed, one against the face of one of the clamping members 7, the other against the face of the other clamping member 7, and then by the operation of the treadle 18 the two clamping members are pushed together; whereupon a clamp cover 21 (Fig. 8) is placed over the clamping member 7, as indicated particularly in Fig. #1. These clamp covers 21 are of approximate inverted U-section, with outwardly projecting flanges at the base, and are of resilient material. In pressing these clamp covers 21 down over the clamping strips the sides of the members 21 are sprung apart somewhat, said clamp covers therefore acting by spring action to hold the clamping strips 7 tightly together and to hold the fabric tightly between them. The tight holding of the fabric is further facilitated by the fact that each strip of fabric passes down between the outside of the cor responding clamping strips 7 and inside of the clamp cover 21 and oved one of the base "flanges of the clamp cover 21.
The dogs 13/? and 13 are pivoted to their supports and springs 23 and 2% permit said dogs to yield as the flanges of the clamp cover 21 are pressed downward, the dogs be ing forced by the springs 23 and 2% over the edges of such flanges 22, after said flanges have passed the teeth of the said dogs.

In Fig. 10 I have illustrated a portion 1 of a spanning frame, provided'with seats 6 for the clamps 7-21 and with intermediate clamping devices 521. The clamping strips 5 of Fig. 10 are fixed portions of the spanning frame. Since the structure of the spanning frame forms no portion of the present invention I deemit unnecessary to further describe the said spanning frame.
What I claim is 1. Clamp applying apparatus comprising a support for clamp-strips, two independent clamp-stripgripping means, one such gripping means arranged to hold one clamp strip, the other such gripping means arranged to hold another clamp strip, one such gripping means movable toward and from the other and arranged in its movement toward such other gripping means to carry a clamp strip held by it toward a clamp strip held by such other gripping means, and operating means for such movable gripping means.
2. Clamp-applying apparatus comprising a support for clamp strips, clamp-holding dogs projecting through openings in such support and arranged in pairs, one dog of each pair being movable toward and from the other dog of that pair, and a movable 1 support to which each of such movable dogs is secured, and means for moving said m'ov able support, whereby the movable dogs may be moved toward and from the other toward and from the other dog of that pair and a movablesupport to which each ofsuch movable dogs is secured and means for moving said movable support whereby the movable dogs may be moved toward and from the other dogs, each of such dogs having an inclined upper face and adapted to yield hen downward pressure is exerted against such face, and then to spring forward when such pressure is released.
4. Clamp applying means comprising a table,a slide mounted to move beneath such table, pivoted spring-actuated dogs mounted on such slide and projecting through openings in said table, other spring-actuated dogs secured to said table and likewise projecting through openings thereof, and means for operating said slide.
