Description

S. J. GOFF.
WASHING MACHINE.
APPLICATION m50 luNE 4.1914.
SAMUEL J. GOFF, OF DALLAS, IOWA'.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Application'led June 4. 1914.
To aZZ'w/i omzmai/ Concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. Gom, a citizen of the United States, and resident yof Dallas, in the county of Marion and State of Iowa, have inventeda certain newiand useful lashing-Machine, of which the following is a specification;
The .object of my'inventionis to provide afwashing machine of simple, durable and inexpensive construction,'in which a clothes holding device within the tub is swung or reciprocated.
More particularly it isfmy'object to providesucli-a device having an-agitating devicev of the kind mentioned of extremely simple and inexpensive construction,y and in-Y cluding a clamping bar` forv holding the clothes'against the portion of the agitating` device within'the tub, and having also suitable simple means for controlling the clamping ba-r from a point outside the tub.
Still a further object is to provide such a controlling device mounted on and adapted tomove with the movable parts of 'a ma# chine,l so vthat the whole yagitatingy device has a minimum number of friction points on'the body of the machine.
Myinvention consists in certain-details, in the construction, combination. and `arrangement of the: various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, ashereinafter morel fullynset forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 shows a side elevation of a washing` machine, embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows a vertical, transverse, sectional view through the same; Fig. 3 shows a top or plan view of the machine. Fig. 4 shows a horizontal, sectional view, taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a horizontal, sectional view, taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. G is a detail, sectional view, taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 2, and shows the manner in which the oscillating member is pivoted to the cover member.
In the accompanying drawing, I have used the reference numeral 10 to indicate the body of an ordinary washing machine tub, resting upon supporting legs 11, having an ordinary hinged cover 12. The agitator of my improved washing machine is of the type which is pivoted in the cover and adapted to swing in the interior of the tub on its pivotal point. The agitator, which is indicated generally by the reference character A, is a Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 21, 1915.
Serial No. 843,097.
U shaped device having the horizontal member 13 within the interior of the tub, and the parallel upwardly extending arms 14, ex-
tending upwardly through the tub cover to` points spaced above the tub cover.
Theagitator is pivotally mounted in the following manner: In the upper Vsurface tub cover is a transverse groove, in=which is received a rod 15, having loops 16 formed at its ends receiving the upright members 14 which are fixed in said loops to permit thev agitator Ak to swing to and fro inthe tub 10' when the shaft 15 rocks. Mountedion the upper surface ofthe cover 12`and adapted to cover thegr'oove which receives the rod 15, is suitable plate 17 having slots 17a there into'permit proper movement of the parts.v
Itwill be understood that any suitable means lfor pivoting the agitator inthe movable cover may be employed.V
Formed on the upper ends of the members 14V'V are loopsslS. Extended through the loops l18 is one member 19 of the agitator controlling device, theother sides of which are yindicated generally by the reference characters 20 and 21.
The handle is preferably substantially rectangularas shown, orotherwise vformed sothat theportion 20is of suchlength'as to allow. the operatorfto use the'machine from a. choice of positions.` On the member 20 may befa'suitable roller 20@ to give abetterhand hold. Slidably mounted onthe members14, in the yinterior, of the tub 10,'is a clamping bar 24. Secured 'to the clamping barf21, approximately at the middle there-- of, is an upwardly extending rod 25, extending `through the coverf12 `to a'point Zabove the same. The lower surface of the cover 12 is provided with suitable slots 26 to permit the swinging motion of the members 14 and 25. Pivoted to one of the upright members 14, above the cover 12, is a lever 27, which extends adjacent to and beyond the other member 14 and is pivoted to the upper end of the member 25. The last mentioned member 14 is provided with a plurality of notches 28 and a pawl 29 is pivotally secured to the member 27 and designed to selectively engage the notches 2S to hold the members 24, 25 and 27 against upward movement. The lever 27 is preferably composed of parallel members, slightly spaced from each other, as shown in Fig. 4, said members being pivoted at one end to one of the upright members 14 and receiving between them at their other end the other member 14. rllhe portions of the lever 27 which extend beyond the last mentioned member 14 are brought together and form a handle 30.
In the practical operation of my improved washing machine the clamping member 24 is raised by means of the member 25 and lever 27 and the clothes are placed between the agitator member .13 and the clamping member 24k and the clamping member is pressed toward the member 13, against the clothes. When Ythe member 24 is. pressed tightly against the clothes, the pawl 29 is moved to engage the upper notch 28 and the clothes then are clamped lirmly in position. It will be seen that the member 241C may be clamped in various positions, as`
shown for instance by the dotted lines and by the full lines in Fig. 2, for holding different quantities of clothesor other articles to be washed.
The advantages of a construction such as that shown in my drawing are numero-us. Theparts are of comparatively simple and inexpensive construction; the agitator device is mounted to swing readily and easily in the. tub cover and the clamping bar fastening means is so mounted and arranged on the agitator device that it is not necessary to secure it in any direct way to the tub body or cover, whereby 1 have been able to produce a machine having the fewest points of contact and therefore the fewest points of friction possible on the tub body or cover. @n account of the use of the rectangular member, comprising the members 19, 20 and 21, I am enabled to secure a rigid construction for properly bracing and spacing the upper ends of the members 14 and giving av handle which may be operated from a Variety of positions.
It will be understood that some changes may be made in the details of the construction of my machine, without departing from its essential features, and it is my intent to cover by this application any such changes which may be included within the scope of the following claims.
l. claim as my invention:
1. In a device of the class described, a tub body, a hinged cover thereon, an agitating device comprising a shaft rotatably mounted in the cover, a horizontal member within the tub body and upright members fixed to said shaft and adapted totilt when the shaft is rocked, means for imparting re ciprocatory motion to the upper ends of said upright members, a clamp slidably mounted on said upright members within the tub, av
rod pivoted to said clamp and extended up- Y wardly through the cover, alever pivoted at one end to one upright member above the cover, means on the other end of said lever for engaging the other upright member at different points thereon for locking the lever against upward movement.
2. In a device of the class described, a tub body, a hinged cover thereon, an agitating device comprising a shaft rotatably mounted in the cover, a horizontal member within the tub body and upright members iixed to said shaft and adapted to tilt when the shaft is rocked, means for imparting reciprocatory motion to the upper ends kof said upright members, a clamping bar slidably mounted on said vupright members withl in the tub, a .rod secured to said clamping bar and slidably mounted in the tub cover, means mounted on one of the upright members for raising and lowering said clamping bar, and means on said last mentioned means for engaging the other upright member at different points thereon for preventing upward movement of said clamping bar.
