j 3 f Application ined Api-1127, 1911. seriaiNo. 623,677.
T dll whom it may concern:
` Bent knoivnthat I, Honxxno E. CoFrIN, a
` citizen of the United States of America, re-
sidingat Detroit, in the countyof W'ayne,
and State of Michigan, have invented certa1n,4 evvfV and useful Improvements in EX- plosioil Engines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to explosion engines of that type in which rotary valves are em-A ployed for controlling the ports of the cylinder, and the invention consists in the peculiar-construction and arrangement of the valve and its seat and 'connecting passages as more fully hereinafter set forth. I
Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section through thecylinder and through the valve in cross section; Fig. 2 is a bottom sectional plan View on' line w-m Fig. 1.
A is the cylinder of the engine, B is a de-` tachable head for said cylinder which. is
-chamloered toform aI cylindrical valve seat C having a transverse axis, a Water jacket D almost completely surrounds said seat, and passages F1, F, G and AH communicating with ports in the valve case.
It is the object of the invention to protect the valve from the pressure developed by explosion and also from the high heat of combust1on,'and at the same time it is'an object to provide easy passage for the gases through the valve ports and connecting channels.
These objects are attained irst by'reducing the Size or diameter of the cylinder valve to the minimum and by forming a comparatively narrow elongated port therethrough, second,`by completely surrounding the valve with the exception of ports with the valve case so as to reduce the surface ,eX-
posed to the pressure of explosion to the minimum,' and third, by enlarging or flaring side of the head B and the passages E, F. Gr, and H fromthe ports communicating with the valve. i
As shown, the passage E extends to one port I in the valve case which is diametri- Copies of this patent may 'be obtained fior communicates with a EXPLosIoN-ENGINE.
cally opposite to the port J communicating with the passage F. In the same manner the passage G extends from the opposite side of the head B and connects with the port K 1n the valve case diametrically opposite the port L therein communicating vvith the passage H. The walls of both the passages E and G are curved so as to gradually change theV direction thereof, The passages H and Fcommunicate with the end of the cylinder and between these passages is a portion M of the valve case which protects the valve from the pressure. of explosion and which has a water chamber for absorbing the heat. N is the rotary valve having thel central narrow elongated passage O for successively connecting the ports I, J, K and L.-
With the construction as described in operation, the valve is `constantly rotated by any suitable drive connection (not shown) and when in registration with the ports will alternately open the inlet and exhaust passages. As it is protected both from the pressure. and heat the difiiculties encountered with many constructions of vrotary valves for explosion engines are overcome. What I claim. as my. invention is:
In an explosion engine, the combination with the cylinder, of a head therefor having a transversely arranged cylindrical valve tinuations enlarging/frein the'ports `inthe' seat to their opposite ,erds and said continuations having the walls thereof curved.
In testimony whereof I aiIiX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
